A friend of mine has this and I am thinking of buying it from him as a project. Trying to get an idea of a fair price to offer him for it.

Also would like to know what upgrade potential this rig has.

Not much upgrade potential there... I would pass on it.

    That's a pre Dell area-51 m15x not a M15x.
    I'd say ~300-350$

Id say buy it. If you could get it for $300 to $350 max.

Sell the 8700GT and the 2GB of ram.

Upgrade to a GTX 260 or 280. (Heck Ive got a 9800m GT T9300 CPU and 4gbs of RAM and it chomps though all my games with max settings, except for MW3 I have to turn down 2 texture settings down to "high" instead of "extra".) lol.

Grab 4 to 8GBs of ram.

It would be one beast of a Laptop.

Only downer is the hinge system is weak, but an easy fix nonetheless.
You could upgrade the processer but the biggest CPU upgrade wouldnt be that much of a difference for the $...

Buy an Area 51 M17x Bare Bones, which I just happen to be selling :), transfer over the components, and you will have a lap top that can still run the latest drivers, and you can up grade to dual GTX280m like me.
