Zeggy,
I have an Area-51 m15x that I upgraded... try using this driver:

There are virtually no folks left at Alienware who are familiar with this particular model. Most of them were let go when Dell invaded.

I am posting this here because I did not have the Issue till I upgraded to Win7 64....
I am sporting an original m15x with the 8800gtx That I upgraded to Windows 7.
When I watch a Blu Ray while plugged in using Power DVD 9 everything works flawlessly. However, when I try and watch a blu ray on battery I get all kinds of video chop. I have tried maxing out the power settings in the Windows 7 Control Panel, but I have not seen much improvement. Anyone else experience a similar issue and if so, were you able to resolve it?
I also instaled a SSD in the m15x and that reduced the chop but it is still there.
When I run GPU-Z
On the Sensors tab of GPU-Z
When pluged in:
Core clock: 500 MHz
Gpu memory Clock: 799.2
Gpu Shader Clock: 1250.0
Battery:
Core clock: 275 MHz
Gpu memory Clock: 300.2
Gpu Shader Clock: 550.0
Can anyone help?
Thanks! -
It might be because the CPU auto downclocks when you are on battery resulting in a choppiness. I'm just guessing.
-
If that is the case, does anyone else with a blu ray player experience the same thing after upgrading to Win7? -
For sure the downclock is because of the BIOS limitation.
-
Why did this BIOS setting never negatively affect the playback when on Vista?
This is killing me... I would just upgrade the comp to a M14x but I hate the glossy screens.... -
Hey, my m15x has been working fine up until just recently. Now whenever I am using the 8800M GTX card I will frequently (but not always) get a messed up display, garbled colours, and anytime I try to play a game it will crash a few seconds in with a 'Display driver stopped working and successfully recovered' error.
I am using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit with the 186.81 drivers. Should I change the drivers? Or is it a hardware issue?
I should note that using the Intel GPU works without fault,
Any help would be appreciated
-Benfclark- -
Sounds like the GPU is dying on you. I had the same issues too before getting the new one.
-
Would you happen to have updated links for the drivers? I'm missing 2 Base system devices without drivers. I've installed the nvidia video card drivers as well but it blue screens the computer. Some of the links in the first post do not work.
-
For the main drivers just go to their main website. As for the nVidia, check around this alienware forum. I'm running Ati ATM.
-
same exact thing just started happening to me as well. windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
other than it getting really hot here, nothing much has changed with my set-up. i want to blame a windows update or messed up drivers instead of my GPU..... -
I reformatted with windows 7. THen I installed the chipset drivers, raid drivers and OSD. I want to install the external graphics card . So, I switched to external graphics, restarted, and ran the nvidia setup . But The NVIDIA drivers (from alienware support) say "cannot find hardware compatible with the driver".
So, i checked out device manager. There are still devices not recognized. I know one of them has to been the video card slot, because this problem happened the last time i reformatted. But I cant remember how to fix it. What must I install in order for my PC to recognize the external video card? Im really confused, because I evern tried both chipset drivers (the vista 64 from alienware support, and the intel one you provided)
Heres a picture of the drivers missing.
-
NEVERMIND, I FOUND THE ANSWWER! WOOO! All i had to do was install the 186.1 nvidia driver, from the nvidia site.. NOT the ones from alienware support. Works fine now!!!!
-
Unfortunately the ones from AW don't work.
-
Thank you kobe for your efforts!
But could you please list the order of installing all the drivers? -
Here's the order (taken from Alienware)

Will these work with a new HDD as well ? Any idea how to get Alien Respawn onto a new HDD ? I decided to upgrade to win7 and replace my old smaller capacity HDD at the same time
-
You can try to use an imaging software like acronis or norton ghost to see if it works. But, I can't guarantee that it will work. I lost my Alien Respawn way back.
-
Turns out it was a slow painful GPU death. The GPU has tanked now, looking into a replacement.

Thanks for the link, will keep an eye on it.

wow... a long back I created a tool to help myself and the community. At that time I never knew that it will be so popular that I will get so many requests to put it back. Though I never took it offline, I by mistake deleted the folder from the server while the code remained on Codeplex for anyone and everyone to re-use without any issue (just small credits to me
)
Anyways... that was long back. I have put the tool back on my server.
AuroraLightsFX
Enjoy fellas... I might not be able to provide much support as I am realllyyy busy in my life these days and not using my m15x a lot these days. So expect delays...
MODS: Please update any links/threads or just update in those threads that the tool/link is alive now -
Thanks findvikas, glad to have you back on board!

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of a problem with the bluetooth on my m15x. I have installed the relevant drivers but I can never seem to find any device on it to be able to pair. I am running windows 7 64 bit and as far as the device manager is concerned all drivers are installed and running fine. Any ideas?
-
I have gotten my friend's old cellphone to pair up with my m15x once to transfer some photos. Are you sure that the bluebooth on the device is enabled? It should pick it up automatically.

Hello everyone I purchased an Alienware m15x r1 (Intel X9000, 4 GB ... bios v.x36 skullcap) I installed Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate.
I have encountered these problems:
-DVD player is not recognized in bios / windows, I tried to change him but nothing, I tried to install from usb bios x36 but the update stops in the middle and the pc restarts.
-I would like the command center right but I can not find it, I will explain better: I've seen people on the internet that has entries in the command center "sense, touch, fusion, fx" in my command center, I only have the "fx" you know where I can download the command center right? I tried to install the updated version but I can adjust the lights but I can adjust the settings of the battery.
Can anyone help me solve these problems?
Nota di reindirizzamento -
Have you tried out the steps in my guide to solve this issue yet?
-
and the DVD player (I know to be working) is still not recognized as perhaps the problem lies in the interface between the player and the motherboard -

Hmm I was under the impression you could not update GPU drivers on the m15x NVIDIA 8700M-GT 512MB....can someone who is familiar with this please let me know if I am wrong and will the beta drivers work?
-
Sorry, I never owned the 8700, maybe someone who had one could help you out. Never knew that it was hard to get drivers for nvidia cards.
-
hey im new here i have been trying to fic m cc and all my lights and settings dont work since i uped to win 7 cc opens but nothing works please help been at it for two weeks.
-
robert have you tried aurua lights (link on the first page of thread) there is also a guide on getting control center to work (i used that one)
hello everyone. new here, i just bought a used m15x legacy model and updated it to win7 (with the help of this thread) just wanted to say awesome work you guys saved the day for me
big overheating problem with gpu temp. the gpu stays below 60 during normal use but after starting a game under load temps reach over 100c! (obviously i shut the game off immediatly) i have never seen temps this high.
things i have done to attempt to fix:
cleaned fans, made sure they are spinning at 100%
replaced thermal compound with as5
changed power performance options
cleaned heatsink and make sure vents are clear
none of these have helped but i oddly noticed a couple things when replacing the old thermal compound
1)2 bolts on the heatsink are missing
2)a normal amount application of paste does not make contact with the heatsink i had to use about 3x normal amount to get it to stay on without turning off
i suspect a thermal pad was there orginally but i dont know what size can anyone confirm this?
thank you for any help! -
You need the thermal pads to cover the black chips on the GPU in order to keep the temperature cool too. And try to find two more screws for the heatsink that way the heat will be more equally dissapated.
-
the thermal pads are there on the black chips of the gpu so that cant be the problem. they look brand new
will look into ordering 2 more heat sink screws though
ive looked everyone cant find anywhere that sells these screws online or otherwise. i know the hardware stores around here wont have em
1/4" length
1/16" diameter
+springs
even with two more of these screws though i dont think thats gonna bring my temps down by 40c i played dead island today for 5 minutes and checked my temps @over 110c on the gpu. cpu 55c. alternatly i played plants vs zombies for 6 hours and checked my gpu it was only at 77c
*update*
i also wanted to add i can watch movies in hd on netflix all day with no temp issues fans dont even kick on
i just read that the x36 bios would help but when i isntalled those bios i got bsod everytime i turned a game on so i had to revert to x32 bios -
I want to say THANK YOU!!!! I have learned so much by reading this forum and many others. Here's my story....Two years ago, my brother wanted me to buy his AW for 750 bucks....he paid 3100 (he makes money so he can do that stuff) It still had a warranty left on it which just expired in April 2012. He was having issues but also did not have the knowledge to fix as it was sent back to AW 3x. (video card and overheating) It came with vista 32bit...I installed 7 64bit Ult. He sold it to me because he knew I loved computers and if it was fixable, I could fix it. So, two years later and it is ROCK SOLID....Fast, cool(temps 45-53 when not gaming, and taken care of like a baby. I want to add that it took me four times until I got 7 64 bit right with everything operating as it should including the command center. Key was patience, installation ORDER!!!!, and reboots when prompted....no shortcuts. Also, I keep in an EBAG Macroloader Backpack which is a perfect fit and PLENTY of padding. I move around daily. AW area51-m15x 15.4" with x36bios....I will post all my specs shortly but it is the smooth silver skull cap model. I also want to add that some software will effect the AW performance(ex. Blackberry Desktop Software), so be cautious of what you install!!!. So with that being said, I wonder if it will support 8gig ram(just curious) and also I notice my power head light now turns to red when unplugged which is not set as color scheme in command center.(never did that before) I am wondering if it is something I have done so I am still investigating and have done a few software changes lately. Keep in mind like any computer, it sometimes has glitches which a reboot normally fixes. I have had nothing but good from this laptop and currently use daily with Crestron software. Any thoughts on ram? Also, any thoughts on where another battery can be purchased(want a 9-cell)? Thank you everyone for the awesome work on AW. I will be happy to help in any way I can
-
Pretty sure that it can take 8 gigs of ram. As for the battery you would have to try ebay. Ztronics only sells the 6-cell battery.
-
Thank U Kobe
Do you know of anyone running 8 gig? Also, Dell SUPPOSEDLY has battery for this model...at least that is what I was told and it would be in the spare parts department(never heard that b4) lol. Thanx again Kobe

Today is a sad day for me, I sold my m15x r1.
Although on the brighter side I took an image of the resorce cd and uploaded it to rapidshare. 500mg.
Here is the link if you need it
: https://rapidshare.com/files/3893149928/m15x_r1_resorce_disk.rar
It has the complete settup drivers for all m15x r1 devices.

Pete. -

I still have a copy of the Ripley resource cd for the m15x if anyone needs it.. pm me.

Hello,
I'm almost certain i'm just doing it wrong in some way, but i'd really appreciate any help!
I've finally decided to upgrade my Area-51 m15x to Windows 7 64bit, and all goes well, right up to the nvidia graphics drivers installation part.
I have managed to get 186.82 installed, but that appears either to simply not work, or not work well enough for games to actually run - such as minecraft or neverwinter. When I got the most up to date driver from the nvidia site, i just get the dreaded BSOD-reboot-BSOD loop whilst loading windows, but before getting as far as the desktop. I can start windows in safe mode, and roll back the driver, which then allows me to at least get back into windows to try other drivers, but i'm really hoping that it is possible to get Win7 working properly.
The BSOD error mentions dxgkrnl.sys if that's any help +)
I also found THIS tool, which does enable me to install drivers that previously thought they didn't fancy it.... but alas, no joy.
oh, also, i can't get the keyboard lights to work again. i've tried the steps mentioned early on in this post - about deleting the profile and creating a new one, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.
Anyway, thank you very much for taking the time to help out! -
message me if you need it.. -
-
i sold mine too a few years back, only i wish i had kept it as it was the last pre-dell model
-
-
for both windows 7 x64 and vista x64, command center sees the computer as an area 51 desktop instead of an area 51 m17x. thanks to this, only half the keyboard lights up and the touchpad doesnt light up at all. also, video and touchpad drivers downright refuse to install on either os. pls fix nao.
-
Thank you so much for this thread, I was able to get win 7 pro x64 installed on my 2008 Alienware m15x-r1 with minimal issues. I had the keyboard issue, used the 2010 drivers and followed the recommended install order and used the keyboard fix registry edit, the ripley registry edit, the touchpad drivers from the manufacture and the touch-pad driver fix prior to restarting. Now I am left with only 1 issue, fn+12 only generates a "touch-pad on" message from the OSD (win 7 version provided by dell, not the vista version with compatibility mode), and the light around the touch-pad stays on. If I plug in a mouse the light stays on but the touch-pad turns itself off and accepts no input (this is a good thing). I figure a touch-pad with a light forever on is better than a keyboard that is forever dark... And who cares about Aliensense (stupid program and annoying if you ask me). My power options in my command center also don't work as designed but I can use windows to select power options.
Now comes the great experiment, I was running windows vista x64 (manually installed because I ordered this laptop with 2 gb of memory and thus got vista x86 ultimate... then upgraded to a max of 4 gb), and vista ran quite well, no issues, great laptop, plastic wearing out but hardware still kicking and I only had to bake the 8800 gtx once! I should have taken pictures of my epoxy reinforcement project, anyway, I am going to install WINDOWS 10, yes, that's right, I am going to upgrade this way past expiration date laptop to Microsoft's latest and greatest operating system. I was going to do it this past weekend but I ran into keyboard lighting issues... anyway, fixed that and installed all the windows updates that windows update could find, I am on to upgrading to 10. Any one else do it? Any recommendations? Or should I take notes and provide what I find? -
Everything worked better than expected, system runs windows 10 great!.. On the Integrated Intel Card. Without Nvidia Drivers for the 8800 GTX I think I am out of luck. I tried to install the vista x64 ones without luck. I also let windows install the latest drivers from nvidia but then my monitor wouldn't turn on after the system booted... So after getting into safe mode and using the graphic driver sweeper, I am on the fence about staying on 10. At least 7 let you use the vista graphics driver and thus was still a computer you could play games on. If anyone knows of working 8800 gtx drivers for windows 10 let me know!
