Does anyone have an updated BIOS for the m17x-R1? For the life of me I can't find one ANYWHERE, and I think it's the root of my problem. Tried looking through the board here, but haven't found any links to a BIOS for my unit. All I've found online are dead links, or the M17x Dell bios. Does anyone have a working dl?

I assume you mean the M17-R1? If so did you look 7 threads down at the topic "Alienware M17 R1 Bios needed"?... there are links in there.

If you mean the first revision of the M17X which was actually the M17x-R2 then you are in the wrong forum as this is for legacy systems only.

Nope, I mean the m17x-R1. This is a pre-dell system, but it's not the M17. The M17x came out in 2009, and mine was purchased in 2008.

That's what it looks like on the bottom. It also has a flat back, without the raised area the later model has.

Wow I love how your bottom panel looks. I'm sorry that I can't help, but I just love how it looks.

Odd even wiki says this laptop was a Dell laptop:

M17x (Discontinued) - Introduced in 2009, it is the first laptop released by Alienware after the company was bought by Dell. The name and some of the design is based on the Alienware 17 inch laptop, the Alienware M17.

Further digging though I found this CNET review of the M17x

    Alienware Area-51 m17x Review - Laptops - CNET Reviews

Then there is then another article less than 2 months later reviewing the M17

Alienware M17 Review - Laptops - CNET Reviews

With all of this info it looks like the M17x came out and then soon after was already pushed aside for the M17. This is certainly an odd laptop as I always thought it went M17 to M17x-R2. Not M17x to M17 to M17x-R2

No kidding. I'm beyond confused at this point. Even better is this link right here:

    Area-51 m17x (Before September 2009)

If I click on the Features and Specifications tab, it... doesn't even list the correct graphics card options. I've kept all my original paperwork from the sale, along with the papers I got when I had to send it in under warranty for repair, so I know full well what I've got. I'm just... hoping someone else has the bios backed up somewhere. I know some people DID as I've found dead links, but... *headdesks* I've got a funny little machine.

Thanks. I think it's a beautiful looking machine. Nice and clean, with just the right amount of detail!

Do you know the name of the original (I assume .zip) file? If so I am pretty good at google digging.

Unfortunately, I just tried to find the dead links, and I can't locate them again. I'm not even sure what the most updated version of the BIOS is, because I keep running into the OTHER M17x R1 that dell put out.

All I know is that M17X R1 - Alienware User Support isn't it. I'm not sure if the legacy laptop would have the same naming scheme as the dell one, but at least it gives some points of reference.

Ok, so let's do a quick clarification. Your computer is an Alienware Area 51 m17x. The m17x R1 is a DELL branded machine rather than Alienware. All DELL branded machines have the BIOS posted at support.dell.com. Since your computer is an ALIENWARE machine you will need to log in to support.alienware.com under Myhive with your account number and password to look for the BIOS. That's the only route I know.

But my hive have been down for months... I have been trying to log in with different computers, browsers and still the same thing.

Sorry about that, we have been having issues with it lately but the issue has already been escalated.

Right. So, let me get this straight. When I go to your own support sight, it tells me... I have a legacy machine. I purchased my machine in 2008. Not 2009. The machine I linked? The M17x-R1 with bios? Isn't my machine. At all. It doesn't even look the same. I have every bit of paperwork for this machine from sale. Even the paperwork from when I sent it in for repairs. I purchased this in 2008. Which kicks me into legacy support. Can you please explain this to me? If I don't have a legacy system, why am I kicked into legacy support?

It looks like he was saying you need to go to the alienware myhive site (which he also acknowledged is currently not working) to get your BIOS file.

Because your computer is not a DELL branded machine it's an Alienware Corp. branded one, therefore the support that you need to use is MyHive.
