I've recently shifted my m5500i (bought in 2007) Alienware into a media device, but I'm having trouble getting my HDTV to recognize it. I can hook it to the TV via S-video but the quality is very low (the laptop has a 1920x1080 native resolution). I bought a DVI-HDMI conversion cable but the TV just keeps reading "no signal" when I switch to the HDMI input.

Any ideas on how to get past this problem, or is it an issue with the conversion cable?

    Thanks much

I'd say video driver or cable issue.

Think I should just try updating the drivers? The card is an Nvidia Geforce 8600M. Maybe I should check if it even supports such a connection

Did you upgrade to the 8600 or buy it already installed? I used to have the same laptop but the highest card offered at the time was the 7600go.

It could be drivers that's the problem or the card doesn't support it.

Thanks for the response--my card actually fried almost exactly one year ago and I had it replaced. I don't think I upgraded it, but maybe the guy who repaired it for me got a model higher? In any case, the drivers haven't been touched since the reinstall of the card
