Hey all, new to the forums.

Picked up one of these laptops today, got a good deal from a friend who sold it to me as a "broken" machine, but not knowing what was actually wrong with the machine itself.

Here's what happens: plug the power connector into the machine. The machine AUTOMATICALLY powers itself on, but nothing appears on the screen. LEDs and DVD drive lights are switched on, don't actually have a hard disk in the machine to see if it spins though, got one on the way that I've just ordered.

The DVD drive ejects when I press the button, and when I try to power the machine off by holding the power button for a few seconds, it automatically powers itself straight back on again, with the same symptoms.

I'm not that bad with laptop hardware, but I'm far from expert, hence why I came to this forum. Anyone know what could possibly be wrong with the machine?

    Thanks in advance.

As for the powering up, this is usually because the cmos battery is dead. If the bios resets then the system loses it's information that it should be off and therefore powers up. It can also be corrupt bios information which removing all power and the cmos battery for 10 mins should correct. As for your lack of screen it is most likely the motherboard, this is unfortunately a very expensive replacement.

Thanks for the reply. Where would the CMOS battery be located in this laptop? I'm really hoping it's not a motherboard problem, I don't have the money to replace the mobo, would have to sell the laptop off for spares if that's the case...

It's underneath the panel on the base.
