First thing it may have nothing to do with your computer but the schools network. Most likely the ethernet network/subnet will have a different amont of traffic than the wireless network/subnet. And each subnet may have a different bandwidth limit.

Any way, what OS are you running? I have a vista INF version that I can upload. Not sure if there is one for XP.

thanks for your reply! it's definitely not the school's network (i'm an IT admin here and run the computer lab i'm in) because the "wireless" network i'm talking about is just a linksys plugged into the same set of ethernet jacks as the one i'm plugging into directly.

when i do the A/B test between getting internet through the wireless and internet through the marvell yukon, it's obvious that it's the marvell yukon having the problem. the other consideration is that after some fooling around with changing drivers back and forth and restarting the system, the ethernet did work perfectly for about 5 minutes, then stopped.

i also completely disabled sygate firewall pro to rule out that factor. it could only be the hardware, drivers, or some other system conflict at this point. what i really want to know is if anyone else with the m9750 is having the same problem.

oh, and i'm running win xp... not ready to touch vista yet. i'm a video/audio editor and the software i use is too finicky for vista at this stage. can you believe i'm not a gamer? i don't even have a single game installed on this machine! all business for me. ;)

i just downloaded a 1.2 GB movie file from the internet at 10,000 KB/s (about a 2 min download) using a workstation. i plug the m9750 into the same jack and i'm getting worse than dial-up speeds, with the radio disabled, and firewall off. either that or it just hangs and i get nothing. this is very, very frustrating!

i'm at that stage now, but i don't understand a lot of the settings. they're at their defaults now, which should work. going to have to do some googling to figure them out. if someone has an inf file for the latest drivers for winxp that would be great. would like to try that too. as of right now, i'm stumped...

lately, from time to time, my gigabit ethernet adaptor has not been able to get an IP address when set to automatically obtain an IP. The error message says it's getting an IP address that is already is in use, but I've tried evrything I can think of, from refreshing the ip config in command prompt to re-installing the driver...I use the AW driver, I'm wondering if the driver might be the cause...perhaps going directly to the manufacturer for an updated driver will help...

NOOOOOOO! Pretty much don't ever reflash you DVD drive. The only reason it is up there is because they are working on unlocking the LabelFlash ability.

Anyway, what I would do it go to your device manager and uninstall the driver and let vist reinstall it.

After I would clean the drive.

Let me know how it goes.

It worked! What a relief. I don't know how to thank you. You're a life saver. It has been a mess for me ever since I re-installed a clean Vista Ultimate. I've been having random "Memory Management" Blue Screens and everything. I have yet to fix it. I've heard that its a RAM problem, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Would you have an idea? lol Thanks again! :D

    GREAT, reps are always appreciated.

Memory I had the same issue. Normal activity worked fine, but games and copying larges would crash within 5-10 mins.

I suggest taking one memory module out and boot. If it boots that module should be good. Shutdown and try the other, if both work than run a memory test on each module separately.

If you bought the memory from AW you can get a replacement. They will send you a replacement. I usually do this first and when you get on the phone you can just tell them you tested the module and one failed. They won't agrue.

    Good luck.

well, what a nightmare. Got my brand new 9750 in today and I've been on the phone ALL night. It has Vista on it, so that's been another pain, but that's a different story.

What a dissapointment. First off, is anyone else have a problem with the intel wireless adapter? I can seem to keep this thing connected to my wireless router, which I have 5 other things working perfectly on. I've tried playing with all the setting, turning off power saving mode, etc..it's sporadic too, just drops my connection to "limited or no connectivity". In order to get to get my connection back, i have to disconnect, than reconnect. I have a WRTG54 standard wireless Linksys Router btw.

Second issue, for some reason, the dual 8700's are giving me terrible performance in a bunch of games, including Crysis, C&C3, and TF2. The screen just minimizes and maximizes over and over and over until I hard reset. If I do manage to get it working, sporadic again, the audio skips and repeats like crazy. Alienware had me completely wipe vista, reinstall it, and reinstall all new drivers from the website, all to not much help. Anyone else getting audio issues with their laptop?

Thirdly, the volume slider on the right hand side of the laptop feels broken, although it's the least of my concerns. I have to move it very slowly, or it doesn't register in Vista. Very strange, and I was told this was normal, but it doesn't feel right. Oh well. I was expecting better quality among other things.

Anyway, this has been one lousy day, especially since i was really looking forward to this laptop, only to be severely dissapointed. If I can't get this baby working right, it's getting returned this week. I'm not spending 2500 bones for a substandard lappy.

Thanks for all replies in advance. Sorry for the poor attitude, being on the phone for 6 hours with a stranger will do that to ya.

    -Shawn

Hi Shawn! Welcome to the club! Let me help you out:

The networking on Vista is NOT very compatable with routers (especially those with firmware older than 06/2007). Vistas networking stack is just not widely tested and adapted enough to work with allot of hardware. And since networking hardware is relativly static, this problem will take alot of time to resolve. I would see if your router has an option to update its firmware, and try that (carefully of course), or you can also search the web to see if there are other solutions to this. I had the same problem with another laptop and the only way I was able to connect sometimes was to disable IP6 and some other networking options. Again, try google or try XP for this one.

8700s will not give great performance, even in SLI for allot of titles. especially if you are going for the 1900X1200 screen resolutions. Try to instal the latest recomended driver from this tread , and follow the instructions from this other tread ( here). I use 169.28, but I'm using 7950gtxSLI, so your milage may vary. i do hear that the latest drivers are giving 8700s a good boost, and just ignore the Alienware official drivers for now. Also pay close attention to the SLI settings, if it is enabled or not, and also try using nHancer to paly with SLI settings.

As per the audio, it wont work as long as the video is also not working (at least for games). Are normal MP3s working? If yes then your audio shold be fine. If not then it may have a conflict with some other part of your system.

Yes, the volume slider is digital, not analog like most of us want it, so that makes it a little picky. I also have to roll it very slowly to make it work, but not so slow to make it intolerable. try to see where your limits are. vista may also be worse for this as well because of the way vista handles IO.

truth be told, if you are not using DX10, go back to XP. or if you want to go really techie try to dual boot, but that is a whole other post :)

Final note: All of these problems could be related to bad RAM as well. Try to use a memory testing app like memtest86+ to prove it for sure. If you need any other help just post!

    Good luck!

Get my 9750 next week i hope..
Have 3 Questions about the drivers..
    - Motherboard.. Is there not an newer driver than from 2005?
    - The Tv- Tuner dont need a driver or come it with Software?
    - Can i use the Driver from the Wireless 3945 a/b/g Card for the 4965 a/b/g/Draft N?

    Hope someone can help me..

    rsgeiger,

thanks so much for the time and post! Well, in one way I'm glad it seems to be a Vista issue. This is my first experience with it, since my Desktops still run XP. I think I'm gonna dual boot. I have around 120 gigs, I think I'll split that up and dual boot for now. I usually do this with Linux and XP.

In my Linksys, I do have the option to update the firmware, so I'll do that tonight. There's been a few updates, but normally my attitude is, if it ain't broke, don't mess with it. In this case, it's time for an update. I've flashed many bios's so I'm pretty comfortable with that.

As for the 8700's, how do they compare to 7950's in SLI? I was debating to myself if I should just get DX9 cards, since I doubt I'll be do much heavy DX10 gaming(which I don't really see the jump in). Hm..I'm wondering If I made a wrong decision. Another thing I'm thinking of, since I went with an SLI config, very few games use it, maybe I would have been better off getting one 8800M. What's your thoughts on laptop GPUs?

I have memtest on a usb stick, so I'll try that when I get home. I'll try the GPU drivers on this site too, I just wish I found you guys before I spent the entire night on the phone with AW. Thanks for the help.

As a rule you should not update your drivers unless you have an issue with your current driver. For most drivers the MS update driver works just fine.

    - Motherboard.. Is there not an newer driver than from 2005?
No this is the newest driver available. The Motherboard of the M9750 is not even near the newest. And as you know hardware manufactures stop support for older products the second the new version is available, except for Nvidia :)

    - The Tv- Tuner dont need a driver or come it with Software?
Not sure. I'm sure it comes with software and the driver is probably BisonCam which hasn't been updated in years.

    - Can i use the Driver from the Wireless 3945 a/b/g Card for the 4965 a/b/g/Draft N?
I would go to intel's site and see, I doubt it. But don't update your Wireless driver unless your having issues with the current driver.

Your very welcome! Glad I could help at least a little bit :) As per your GPU settup, the rule is that 8800 is equal to or better than the 7950SLI (5 to 15%), and the 7950SLI is better than the 8700SLI (10 to 25%). You cant at this moment get a 8800 for the m9750 (we are all really pissed about that one). So you would need to either trade up to 7950s or trade in the m9750 if you want the 8800 now. We really dont know if the m9750 will ever have a better video card, so you have to be happy with what you have.

And as per doing the dual boot game, take a look at this site if you need a place to start. I know that you have dual booted other OSes, but Vista is a bit different and I dont know what boot loader you will decide to use:
    ( Vista dual boot)

Good luck with the rest! I'm sure you will love the m9750 as much as the rest of us soon enough. Just, as you said, come to see us first :)

It's the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 adapter and I had no success with it. Drops the connection still, even after I just updated the bios on my router. I'm running WEP encryption.

well, I'm gonna try and stick it out to try and figure out what's wrong with the wireless adapter. I love the quality of this laptop, I just wish I wasn't having these issues.

I'm gonna run out and buy another router tomorrow and I also found my XP cd, now to find the key... :( I'm kinda regretting not getting the 7950's instead of the 8700's. Oh well.

Hmm.. I wonder, does Alienware have a trade in program, maybe I could trade this in for a different model, the other laptop they offer maybe? I'm new to Alienware so I'm not too sure. They want me to pay for shipping and 15% of $2200 dollars just to return the laptop, Which comes out to about $330 bucks plus $50 to ship it back, all because they shipped me a laptop that I can't get the wireless adapter to work, and I'm getting audio skipping in my games. I kinda feel like I'm getting a raw deal here...seems a bit criminal actually.

anyone know if the fans on the m9750 can be controlled? i would prefer a bios setting where the fans change their rpms depending on temps or that they remain off if the system is sitting idle.

I just used the Wireless Intel Driver from their website for my Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 and so far so good. On the phone last night, they told me NOT to use the driver from Intel, rather the official one that's over a year old.

Is anyone else using the driver from Intel, the one linked on the first page of this thread? So far so good, crossing fingers. I wonder why they would have told me that...

how do the fans work, then? does the rpm adjust depending on load or is it a set rpm at all times?

edit, i need to state that i am waiting delivery on the m9750 so thats why i am asking.

Motherboard - You can download updated chipset drivers from the download center at intel.com. Its dated 2007; it appears to be a compilation of drivers though. I would bet those are newer than the ones Alienware provides.

TV Tuner - You can download the drivers from Alienware. I'm not aware of any newer ones. (FYI: They are located under the TV Tuner category) They are, however, only drivers. You must purchase your own program to actually use the tuner - such as sagetv or beyondtv.

Wireless Driver - You can download the latest drivers from Intel as well. The driver package you download from intel includes drivers for both the 3945 & 4965. I'm not sure about the zip file you recieve from Alienware however.

It comes on at the temperature theshold. I think I know why you are asking this, I am a former owner of a D900Talso. You won't have CPU tempurature issues with the M9750. And when the fans start they are a fraction of the loudness of the D900T. It is a pretty quiet machine. If you have got the 8700 you will have temp issue with the stock drivers but the 173.xx and 174.xx Nvidia drivers solves the problem.

yeah i have read it is quiet. i am comparing how the fans work with my d900t. the d900t starts the fans at 60c and idles at a certain rpm until the temps drop to 45c (if they do drop depending on ambient temp) and then the fans shut off. then the fans start back up again when the cpu hits 60c again. the fans gradually increase in rpm for every degree above 60c so i can hear them ramp up. i am so used to this way of fan control that i sort of prefer it because i know if the cpu is being taxed without even looking at task manager, i can hear it, lol.

i also like the fact that i can manually enable full fan speed by pressing fn+f2 on the d900t.

Yeah you have none of those features in the M9750 and you won't miss it.

The fan seems to be on and off at a certain temp. There is no util to show the fan rpms, so I can't judge that. If you play COD4 you can hear the fans kick in on start, then off and on during the game.

SP1 should be released in a week or so.

Try posting the issue you're having with the new drivers in the SLI Guide Thread. You may get a few people that may be able to help. I wonder what the issue is, I haven't heard of anyone having trouble installing them. At least the recommended ones.
