if it is an Area51 m17x then the highest GPU you can use is the 9800gt, in Sli or single gpu. the area51 is the older model. It is not the same as the R1 or R2 in this thread. These models are the Dell Issued Models. the 460 will not work nor will the 5870s, 4870s,280s,260etc etc...
there is a Sub forum for discussing the Older Aw systems.

You certain it's an area-51? if so then you have a MXM2.1 260m and I don't believe your HDMI port will work properly.

Can you please post a pic? If you do not know how, send it to my email please. [email protected] and Ill post it for you. Put Area51 M17x in the subject line. With a pic we can tell you what you have.

As far as what cards you can run. The 9800m GTX which would offer a slight improvement can be used and in SLI. However it is a very expensive card. The 260 and 280 should work in the area 51 M17x, they were both offered in the MXM 2.1 confuguration and those cards have been used with various success in the sister machine Area 51 M15x.

Everyone is under the impresion that there were not any 260 or 280 cards produced in the MXM 2.1 configuration with SLI, that'd be a first.

Easy way to know if you have an Area 51 M17x or the newer M17x is look at the front below the keyboard, do the intakes light up with the keyboard etc? If they do its a m17x, if they dont and your keyboard does and the intakes are way small and non-functional than it is a Area 51 M17x.

I'm not under that impression I know they exist, both the 280 and the 260, just that they were never released, and actually the 260 is no different from a 9800 like a 100 point gain on the 3d scale which is hardly worth anything.

Yea it's a MXM 2.1 280 and 260, both produce a large amount of heat, Jdeluna has a m15x like mine with a 280 in his. When you put the 260 or 280 in the system it'll work but you lose out on the HDMI capability and you also have a hard time between switching between the 2 GPU's it's all doable but it has alot of work arounds that come with it.
