There's no guarantee than hinges will be fixed before m11x reaches R4 :p

Well, if enough problems crop up they might have to to please the userbase, and to not, no pun intended, alienate potential customers.

TBH I was borderline for the same reasons Ninja was but one thing I definately noticed an improvement on general multi-tasking on windows is much better in my view on the I5 than it was on the R1. I've now ordered an I7 because of a deal on the dell website (the i5 had a fan failure on it). I also agree that the optimus issues are pretty crap but I expect that in time the issues with waiting for dell to fix their bespoke setup will grate even more.

one thing I do agree is that it is borderline as to which one to go for and it shows in my view how good the R1 actually is.

    Regards,
    Neil.

Well my R2 has just been picked up!

If it had just been the optimus issues I would have put up with it and waited it out. My biggest concern was the heat! The R2 ran so much hotter than my R1, even on idle it would heat up the base and palm rest. The R1 on idle/integrated is so cool I can sit it on my bed and surf!

If this was my only laptop I may feel differently but for power use I use my m15x.

Another thing I disliked was the fact that the OC was pointless, it made a massive difference on the R1. I guess the i7 use plenty more power than the c2d ulv, this in turn limits the turbo boost whilst overclocking

I'm returning the i5 because of a problem with the fan and they don't have any fans in stock (!). I am very happy with the i5 M11x R2 especially the black coating . They wouldn't send me a replacement (!) which is fine as I've just re-ordered the i7 M11x R2 with a slightly cheaper price than the i5 one! Dell just lose the clue more and more every day. they are picking up the duff machine tomorrow.

the stealth finish is amazing! That was definately one of the positives!

I may pick one up again in the future when the bugs have been ironed out, but I am giving an envy 14 a try first.

If you dont mind the phone call it is sometimes worth phoning Dell again to confirm they are coming. I had no problems with this m11x, but I returned a studio 17 a while ago and wasted 3 days waiting for them to turn up!

Returning my R-2 as well, when I called DELL they tried to get me to buy a 15" laptop instead, guy said it's almost the same size, only 4 inches difference LOL. I mean going from basically slightly larger then a netbook (m11x main selling point at least imo) to a full size laptop? Anyone buying an 11" laptop is buying it for its portability (as you can get a MUCH more powerful laptop in 15" range for about the same money, at least in canada, I paid 1600+ for i7 4g 500gb). I love the look and the idea of the machine, but I'm not paying $1600 for a quirky video card (I know it's drivers....but I'm not paying that much money to beta test for DELL). It's a shame really, but IMO something this expensive (relative to what you get performance wise) you should be able to expect a relatively pain free experience out of the box. I've had to mess around with half the games I've tried to install to get some of them to work. I'm considering trying to get an R-1 (can find them all over ebay sub $900, almost 1/2 the price).

Please don't kid - the M11x is a 13" laptop, without the 13" screen. No where near netbook size.

Not quite imo. More of a 12.1". Should've been that size, and with a matte LCD screen and it would've been perfect. Bigger issue is screen glossiness though.

no where near a gaming 15" laptop, much closer to a netbook size then a gaming 15" machine. point is the main reason anyone would buy the m11x is portability, in all honesty what does it have, that you can't get much better EXCEPT the portability?

Agreed. It's near size of my bro's old Dell 1210, but compared to my gf's MB 13.3, it's a lot smaller. My GF notices that too.

They will be fixed in R3. But as usual in the corporate world we live in they will bring back the crappy hinges of R1 in R4.

Repeating the same mistakes over and over again is proof that your CEO is worth every penny that you pay them. After all, remember M15 had the same built in feature.

In my view the hinge problem is an assembly issue. I've had two M11x and neither of them had hinge problems.

I reckon the "soft touch" Stealth black color for the R2 is not that great. The m11x R1 Cosmic black which alot of people complain about because of fingerprints,is actually better.Because the grip is really good.My friend just smashed his m11x r2 stealth black by dropping it from his balcony .So what do you think, Fingerprints vs smashing the m11x?

The thing I'm considering returning it for is the screen. I agree with the Anandtech review, The display is really bad.

Hey Ninja, did you notice a difference in quality in the display between the R1 and the R2?

Because if the R1 is better, then I might return this and exchange it for an R1.

I am thinking about returning mine due to the whole optimus ****. Software based solutions supported by DELL and Nvidia will never work 100% it will come to haunt everyone im afraid.

But what are the rules and steps you need to take to return it and get a refund if I decide to go that far?

The laptop itself is amazing... if it worked!

@all - I would hope that someone either makes a hack or something to completely disable the intel and process completely and directly from the nvidia. In truth I dont know too much about optimus... At work I mess with loads of servers (hp, dell, hpux, aix, and others) The desktops and notebooks are straight forward that we deploy. I have not spoken to any reps on the technology or anything like that. So.. If it were me.. honestly.. I would try to stick it out. I have no idea how hard it is to get a R1 now. Like anything new it takes a while to work out he kinks... Good luck.. StevenX

I would still call about the return. I called a few days outside of my return window on the M17x R1 and they took it back with no restocking fee. The worst that can happen is they say no. Than at least you tried. Just tell them your not satisfied with it or it doesn't meet your needs.

In the UK we only have 7 working days to return. I just phoned up after 5 days and said I was not happy about the optimus issues and heat issues, they didnt even try to get me to keep it.

I called customer service, told them I wanted to return for a refund. They said wouldn't be a problem, but to expect a call from my customer rep in a day or 2. He called, asked why I wanted to return, I told him about the optimus issues. He tried to get me to buy a 15" instead, told him I wasn't interested, said refund would be no problem, I didn't hear from them for 3 days, called today, they said I should have received a shipping label via email, told them I hadn't, asked if I wanted them to send me the label now, or have UPS pick up the package at my home, I said yes to pickup, they will be here tomorrow. Was very painless, they were very polite (as was I, I told them I loved the laptop, it just didn't work the way I needed it to).

For the record, overclocking and Optimus are no longer issues. Optimus is almost perfect; the only issue is that of Punkbuster which will hopefully be resolved in the next week. The overclocking problem no longer exists thanks to ThrottleStop. Now the R2 is able to realise its full potential, i.e. beast-mode.

SU7300 to 640UM is only $150 in Canada. I am from Canada and bought R2 for only $150 more so I have no idea what site you're using.

From an R2 perspective I am surprised at the misleading "upgraded" version. From the benchmarks I've seen its not a huge difference in performance (IN MY OPINION) to comparing the amount of battery life of the R1 to the R2 users. Looking back I probably should have gone with my gut instinct and go with SU7300 just to do with the fact that I hate truely hate TurboBoost, I liked it at first, you know, cool idea, but naw, not for me, I even have the Core2Quad on my desktop thankfully.

As for people saying that getting the R2 is an issue because of optimus, the only way you could have avoided that was buy the original R1 models (at a store or online not from Dell). The new R2 includes the SU7300 now in optimus. (AT LEAST I THINK  )
