How to Supercharge the M11x with Core i5/i7 UM CPUs

I got my M11xR2 today, and im loving it <3

i7-640UM
Overclock: 166 MHz
TDP/TDC: 100/100
Force TDP/TDC: 6
Max processor speed: 2338.1 MHz

The multiplier stayed at 14 all the time during the benchmark , but at the ending of the 1024 test when it was at 95%~ it started to go up to 17 or 19 I don't remember.

You're most welcome. I finally have some time to do some more testing so there should be a new release shortly with a few minor improvements. I'm definitely interested in creating an extra lean version of ThrottleStop, with none of the monitoring code, that specifically targets the M11x-R2 issues. It probably won't have any GUI and will quietly run in the background, maximizing performance without chewing up too many CPU cycles in the process.

If the multiplier started to go up near the end of the 1024M test, that could be a sign that some threads finished their work early and went to sleep which allowed the remaining threads to use more turbo boost so the average multiplier went up. If I had a log file of a 1024M test, this would probably show up. If I get bored, I'll try running this test on a Core i5 desktop CPU to see if I can repeat what you noticed.

I've never found ThrottleStop to be a significant CPU hog so by itself, it shouldn't negatively effect battery life very much. The next version will let you disable battery monitoring. If you do this and disable GPU monitoring and minimize ThrottleStop to your system tray, it's a pretty lean program considering what it can do. If you crank up TDP / TDC and do some gaming while on battery, I can see how that could drain your battery much quicker. If anyone has gathered any data that shows ThrottleStop is abusing their battery time, can you post it so I can try and repeat your testing. Maybe head over to the general ThrottleStop Guide thread in my sig so this thread doesn't get off track.

 

I have 3 months with my m11x R2, with i5, the thing is, I have tested all OC options, from 134 to 166, one by one, and after a few days, or restarts, it goes back to 133, in both TS and CPUZ, is there anything wrong with my laptop?

It works perfect, and I can OC and use TS, for a sesion, but sometimes after a restart, or I go to sleep, turn off the machine, then on again, I open TS and is 133, I have read that it means is not stable so it goes back to 133, but for every OC option? not even 134....

I did (I dunno if is wrong with this laptop) the Intel Burning Test, with 162 OC, 20 runs, and it completed it with not problems.....

Is there anything I don´t know o what´s the problem?

 

Vidaluko: This sounds like a bios bug. The Dell website shows A03. Are you using this version? It might also be a problem with your memory. After a resume from stand by or hibernate, if everything isn't perfect, the bios might reset the overclock back to default settings just to be on the safe side.

 

I have the latest BIOS option for my model, A03, and I never put my m11x to sleep, hibernate or stand by, just on and off...

Also, in the BIOS the OC I selected is still there, like 162, but in TS is 133, I dunno is that has something to do with it...

Now, sometimes when I want to game or do something heavy, I restart, select some OC, because with a restart, it goes back to 133, sometimes is 3-4 restarts, but since the first thing I do when I got to the desktop is turn TS on, I always see the 133......

i tried reading thru this thread but couldnt find my awnser quickly. does the i7 perform much better the the i5 with TS?

ive always been a OCer with the best bang for the buck in mind... so ive never been one to buy the most expencive cpu. but if the i7 is getting better stable over clocks than the i5 in this senerio i might go for the i7.

i played TF2 on my R1 and basically maxed out the cpu (oced) palying on a 24 man server. which sucks. i was at least hoping for performance of a E6750 or abouts. are the i5/i7 capable of that kind of performance with TS?

There is no known way to change the vcore on the Core i CPUs like you used to be able to do on the previous generation Core 2 CPUs. Intel changed the design and removed VID information from that register.

Vidaluko: Some laptops are flaky and the bios resets the overclock back to the 133 MHz default. I haven't heard of other users with this problem except when they try to overclock too high. Just because your CPU is stable at this overclock doesn't mean that the bios will be stable. Overclocking always involves some luck.

i5 / i7 comparison with TS?

OCed results would be ideal, but any apples to apples comparison would be awesome!

ive read the upgrade to the i7 in most cases is unnoticed. but most of what ive read was from users not running TS.

at fully overclocked you get 300 more mhz with the i7 that is all. it does help in games like SC2 though that are cpu bottle necked.

 

Looks like the new TS 2.95 makes the CPU run slower than the older version.

Same configuration on both TS but on the new one the 32M benchmark is running 1 second slower and now I can't break the 39 seconds barrier. (I did alot of tests).

 

I changed the priority that the benchmark runs at to improve consistency from run to run so the times might be different than previous versions. Is your multiplier reported by ThrottleStop consistent during the test? If you can, post or send me a log file with the more data option enabled so I can have a look. I did two 32M tests, looking at the logs everything seems to be normal... the CPU is working at 100% and the multiplier is always at max (13.90~14.00)

Revoluxon: If you are bored can you try running the exact same test and post another log file while using the previous version of ThrottleStop. I'm trying to adjust the priority of ThrottleStop since all the programming manuals say that running a task at a very high priority can be a bad thing. If the old method maintains a higher average multiplier then I might have to ignore what all the books say and go back to doing things the way previous versions of ThrottleStop used to work.

Start up msconfig, click on the Boot tab and click on the Advanced Options button and make sure Number of processors is not checked.

The problem is either that or something in your bios is not set correctly. A Core i7-640UM has 2 cores but it also supports hyper threading so ThrottleStop should be showing 4 threads of data. Look in your Task Manager as well. Does the Performance tab show 2 graphs or 4 graphs? Another user with an M11x-R2 had this exact same problem recently and msconfig was the answer.

How would that have been changed in the first place? I think others here have reported this before as well. M11Ash I think was one...

 

I know I've seen one of those internet myths out there that encourages users to do this to speed up their boot up times. That doesn't work from what I've seen and it really isn't a very good idea when half your CPU is left disabled when you get to Windows.

 

I've never understood people's fixation on boot times.

Maybe does not fit in here, but would it be possible to raise the bclk on the R2 to more than 166 (via software, BIOS mod or hardware mod)?

And as I understand, maybe a BIOS mod to remove that TDP/TCP reset that the BIOS is doing that competes against TS?

 

I'm not sure but SetFSB might support the M11x-R2. I don't think there is much to be gained though even if it does work. The lucky few that can run 100% reliably at a BCLK of 167 MHz probably won't be able to overclock any significant amount higher than this and still remain stable.

I also seem to recall that modifying the Dell bios was not a trivial task.

 

I just found another thread about it. SetFSB supports M11x R2 since November, so it is possible. However, as you say, going higher bclk likely requires higher voltage as well to be meaningful. Is voltage manipulation via software really impossible on the iCore CPUs, or just unknown because Intel has provided no details?

 

A long time ago someone at Intel said adjusting the core voltage was no longer possible in the Core i like you used to be able to do with the Core 2 and previous CPUs. There are motherboard specific programs like Asus Turbo V for the desktop boards that lets you change the core voltage from within Windows but I don't know of any general purpose programs that let you do this in Windows. If it's possible, it's still a well guarded Intel secret. The control register that software used in the Core 2 to control the core voltage was redesigned and the VID voltage part of that register was dropped during the switch to Core i.

 

hmm, well i think that this isn't a normal max temp after a 1024m w-prime test. however i did this on my lap and it didn't feel that hot: core temps in oder from 1-4, 92 93 94 93 Celsius
max of 91 celsius after 30 mins of 3Dmark06 @ default settings each test done 3 times

 

Finally got wPrime to run and I got a score of 31.583 in the 32m test. Is this good?

.PoNeH: On the first page of this thread someone ran wPrime 32M with a time of 25.85s so I think there is room for improvement in your score.

maxotar: The Power Saver feature is useful for the early 65nm Core 2 CPUs but for the newer Core i CPUs, I wouldn't bother using it. If you don't use this feature then you don't need to play with the Power Saver C0% adjustment in the Options window.

Yea my theory is that i had gotten so much dust on the heatsink that it was insulating and blocking the airflow. I had to use a paper clip to stop the fan from moving and blow the dust out. Now I can get this 8344 And only top out at 70 Celsius BUT FOR ALL OWNERS WHO ARE AFRAID OF TEMPS REACHING 80 I HAVE GOTTEN TO 105 AND LIVED.

 

That's because 105 is still within normal operating spec. Let that be a lesson to everyone panicking about core-i temperatures. I'd be far more worried about what would happen to other components nearby.

 

Agred i'm not 100% shure how long it was at 105 but the cpu is designed to withstand those temps nearby components arent 105 isn't in the normal operational range as i think it is the tj max or pretty close to it.

No, the TJmax for the core-i5/i7 is 130. It's 105 in the C2D.

 

THERMTRIP, which is the thermal shutdown temperature, is 130C and 105C is TJMax where the PROCHOT signal is activated and the CPU starts to throttle and slow down. These specs are the same for 45nm Core 2 and the new Core i5/i7 dual core CPUs.

 

I found what is making TS run slower, I thought it was a problem of the new version but I was wrong.

When you let TS check the temperatures of your GPU, it makes your CPU run slower I guess so when you do a benchmark you will notice it running 1 or 2 seconds slower than before.

These are my average numbers on 32M benchmarks (Core i7 640-UM, OC 166MHz):

Without TS: 59~ secs.
TS activated, not checking GPU temps: 38.5~ secs.
TS activated, checking GPU temps: 39.5~ secs.

ok firstly sorry for being a noob. So without having to trawl through 50+ pages can anyone please tell me what TDC and TDP settings everyone is using that would be safe for my i5 m11x-r2 to use without putting too much strain on my machine which is cpu overclocked to 166mhz?

And anything else i should know when using TS thats vitally important?

Put simply, there is nothing to say that you can't push it to the maximum. Even then the CPU's not being strained. I have the same specs, with the same OC and I have it set to the max. Having said that, I'm not 100% sure if my settings are totally correct, so I would value others input.

If anyone can upload some screenshots of the settings configured to the maximum, I'd be very grateful.

 

Same, I would value a screenshot as well. I currently have mine set to 30-30 as is in the example picture.

 

I have my limits set to 100/100 just to be safe (anything below 30/30 could risk throttling, since the CPU will draw more wattage when OC'd so difficult to predict the exact threshold), and the "Force TDP/TDC" at 4 (anything 16 and below would be fine - but I've found that anything above 6 results in the max multiplier to dip slightly, but YMMV).

Is it okay to turn on TS when using and turn off again when not using? Or should I always keep it on but switch between profiles? My guess is, it doesn't matter.

Haha, good. Well my score is down to 29 seconds on 32M in wPrime now (i5), so I think I'm happy.

I'm guessing it's okay to even leave Throttlestop on when not using battery as well too?

 

i'm about to have a play with this... so just to get this straight... i have a i5 cpu... what should i be putting in the multiplier box?

 

TS will work whether plugged in or not. On battery it could drain faster though, so I tend to turn it off unless I'm gaming.

Heres my stats:

M11X-R2 i5 running at 167mhz
TDP = 100
TDC = 100
Force TDP/TDC = 8
Max multiplier (FID) i've seen appear is x12.84

now.... when i run TS bench with 4 threads i get 45secs which is alot better than the 63secs when TS is turned off. But how come some people are getting like 25-30secs on the 32M test??

 

Is 75 Celsius a good temperature fully overclocked max load for three hours of gaming?
