Is intel burn a reliable stability test? I did the 2Ghz SLG pinmod and I passed it 76 times (Left it running while I was asleep) with no errors. Anyway, the laptop already rebooted twice since I did the pinmod (I did it about a week ago). The first time I left it downloading something and when I came back it had rebooted, the second time I was moving it around so I could take a webcam picture and it rebooted in my hand.
I'm wondering if I did a bad soldering job and it's bridging the pins occasionally or if I should try other stability test? Wich ones do you recommend?
I didn't do a volt mod and don't want to.

Congratulations to you two for the working pinmods. I resigned in trying. BUT i managed to get rid off those bloody reboots. I thought it was my trying to do the volt mod, but i did something else: i´ve cleaned the board intensively with a cleaner spray (Kontakt Cleaner 601). After this, the freezes were gone.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

how much RAM do you have? did you run max stress?

if you passed 76 times with max stress with 4gb or more id be 99.9999% sure the rebooting isnt related to your CPU or RAM.

Do you have it set to automatically install updates? It could cause it to reboot.

I have 4Gb and I used max stress, it actually used something like 3.2Gb of available RAM. I hope you are right

When it turned on again, I got the message: "Your computer recovered from a crash, etc", so it wasn't installing updates.

So weird, I'll keep using it and see if it happens again. The first time it happened I had the GPU oced, but the second time I was using the Intel graphics

Am using ICS chip, tried method 2 which is to cut PIN14, after cutting it machine boots just fine, the TME flag shows A5 which means it was disabled.
Downside is Keyboard and mouse does not work (had to use external). Attached PIN 14 again, kb and mouse works again, what could i have been doing wrong?

Witch method is better for an ics pin mod, cutting pin 5 or pin 14?

EDIT: Im using SETPLL, just used setfsb to check register values.

    Cant get setpll to work

    1. Tried OC Mode, even 267 locks up right away
    2. Tried no oc, speedstep enabled, lockups up instantly also
    3. Tried no oc, speedstep disabled, same thing

Cant seem to further overclock, here is a screenshot of my pll dump anyway

    Anything wrong with it?

your not supposed to use setFSB it doesnt work. its hard to explain, but let me try (and correct me if im wrong you pinmod vets) go into the setPLL folder and there are a bunch of files, find the setPLL Batch file (should be .bat) then right click it to make a shortcut. next find the m11x .LUT file (i forget exactly what is call as i renamed it m11x) but find that and if you want rename it m11x. then go into properties in the shortcut you made and change the target to C:\setpll\setPLL.bat m11x XXX.lut. the XXX being whatever you want your bus speed to be. was I right?

Hey guys, just wanted to say cheers to everyone for this mod! I finally bit the bullet and cut pin 14 on my R1 (a few months before warranty runs out mind you). Now I had it clocked at this:

and it was running absolutely perfectly - I tested some games out and did the WEI and it was rock solid, but for some reason web pages would not load at all on chrome. Anyone have a clue why this would be? I didn't try an alternative browser so it could just be the program itself.

Anyway I've clocked it back down to 2060mhz and the performance increase over the factory overclock is very noticeable. I'm going to push it as far as possible and post up some scores (if they are decent) when I figure out this chrome issue. Thanks again to all involved with this mod!

wow... your RAM & CPU should be stable then. i only run 5-20 passes max stress depending how much RAM is in the PC.

you may want to wait to see if it happens again. if it does id start maybe looking at power settings inside windows and or drivers.

Yeah, I'll keep an eye on it, but this has not been a problem yet, didn't restart when I was playing or doing something important.

Hey, I just wanted to share how I did the pinmod. When I saw those pins I really thought I couldn't do it because they are a lot smaller than they appear in the pictures. To solder the wire to the pin I put tape on the four sides of the pin until I had a tiny square with a tiny little silver dot in the middle surrounded by tape. All I had to do was throw in some solder without having to worry about bridging other pins or aiming precisely, I didn't have a magnifying glass or good lighting and it took me about 2 minutes to do this part. I removed the tape afterwards, but it wasn't really necessary.

What took me long was soldering the resistor directly to the small black rectangular thing close to the PLL that provides 3.3V. It wouldn't stick! I tried dozens of times until it sticked and it took more than half an hour to do so.

If I had the ICS PLL I wouldn't cut the pin, cause it is very hard to count them and I would be afraid to cut the wrong one.

So just a few questions on behalf of all the TL;DR'ers,

Is cutting the pin as reliable as grounding it? A while back I read that cutting it caused some issues, were they been resolved?

Also, even though this is an ultra low voltage C2D, can it still take the same amount of voltage as a standard C2D if it has the cooling? or is it a fundamentally different design?

    thanks

Dont know to much about the ICS mods to help you out.

From my understanding its the same archatecture. just requires less vcore to run the same speeds.

Regardless you will hit a RAM wall well before you need the voltage of a standae C2D. Highest SLG is 2.0ghz and highest ICS is around 2.1ghz.

Well I've managed to achieve safe, stable clocks for both my CPU and GPU.

I got 7439 on 3DMark06 which I'm pretty happy with and my WEI is 5.5/6.2/6.6/6.6/7.0.

hey again, im trying to overclock with the bios option turned off, due to the fact that i have a modified bios which allows for 3:5 timings with oc off. i have two problems stopping me from doing this, first off in cpu-z the multiplier (im guessing this is speedstep and not a major problem). the more annoying thing is that setpll won't change the bus speed which means i can't oc at all. the highest i can get my cpu with oc on is 275mhz, so being able to oc on overclock off with decent ram timings and a slightly higher vid without a mod would be very nice, so anyone got any advice?

edit: should also mention i more or less know why i cant get setpll to work, i need to do a ramped oc i.e 215.230.260.275 etc, but the file for the r1 only has entries as low as 266, i dont really understand how to accurately add lower values to the .lut file

I decided to up my GPU clocks a bit since they were pretty conservative and I'm now at:

    Score:
    7890 3DMarks

Shouldn't be too hard to break 8000. :D What is the highest stable clock somebody has just from cutting Pin 14?

    Hey guys,
Im doing the SLG MOD but its a bit wack for 2.0ghz
Connected pin 55 with pin 7 with a 10K resister while in oc mode.
loads up but checked 17xx.xxmhz & then did the volt mod.
    didn t help.
    cant read nvidia gt 335m.
    ram 8gb stock.

now will try pin7 with 10ressistor

Hey "some guy" I was inquiring into weather you were pinmodding peoples laptops still? I have no idea how to overclock or pinmod and am quite afraid of messing things up, I dont even have the required tools to complete such a task as well as the general know how. If you are still doing this I'd be willing to pay well. I would send you a pm but I dont have enough posts to do so at the moment. Thanks in advance!

    Hey Overclock-People

I wanna hardmod my R1 with the SLG DLL.

So i got some questions ?

I wanna reach the 2.0Ghz witth the guide so i have to cennect pin 7 to 6 or 12 is that right ?

Do i have to raise the core voltage to get the best stability ? How can i raise the Voltage ?

sry because of my english xD

@some guy. Thanks! Ill try... Im not very hardware savvy.... used to play a lot of console games and decided to move to PC not that long ago... thought this PC would be able to handle what I needed it to do, but recently I've been selected to beta test the new Star Wars The Old Republic MMO and it hardly runs at minimal settings. I have the core 2 duo 1.73 in OC mode. One question. When doing this pinmod is it better to have OC mode on or off? I heard if its off you can get 2.4 to 2.6 ghz. Im basically just looking for someone willing to make money to do some hardware upgrading for me... such as pinmodding and whatever else it would take to get this baby through a couple more years of casual gaming.

Also I was wondering if there might be a company (small or large) that I can send this into to get the all the mods i need required to get my R1 running at the maximum performance possible. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Im so overwhelmed with all this info as I do not know much, if anything, about computer hardware.

Max is not proven to be achievable by all systems. There is real risk if killing your machine even if only making modest changes rather than max

there is sooooooooooooo much info on this stuff already. i have a handy link in my sig that should answer many questions you might have.

other than that i can help with anything you might not understand. i may even be able to do the pinmod for a small fee if you feel its beyond your soldering skills.

fyi: so far the highest SLG users get is 2.0ghz and ICS users get 2.1ghz. so dont get your hopes up for anything higher. some users will even get lower...

I would definitely be happy with 2.0 ghz... it at least meets the minimum requirements of most of my games. I am definitely not confident with my soldering skills... Ive maybe used a soldering iron twice in my life and buggered everything up. I've read this same thread for the last two days and still cant make sense of anything (thats how lost i am when it comes to modding or hardware even)

Basically, I was just looking for someone who wants to make some extra cash that could vmod, pin mod, OC the GPU and CPU for me. I'm blind in one eye as it is... so I don't think I could psyically do the pin modding anyway.

    thanks! lol.

funny enough i didnt plan to go anywhere. in fact i made it a point to "do nothing". i have some family stuff planed for thanksgiving and then a spa day with the wife. but other than that i actually just want to sit around and catch up on some relaxing. i tend to over fill my schedule on a weekly basis which seems to work ok at not letting my mind get bored, but i have little "me" time because of it. just want to finish some games and start my music project (bought a Macbook to use with Logic pro).

this vacation is all about "me" time. next year i will be going to Vegas tho. cant wait!

Thanks someguy! No you go ahead and enjoy your holiday and vacation and sometime thereafter we can deal with this mess. I in no way expected for someone to do it anytime this month or around the holidays as a matter of fact. I can definitely wait until a better time. Cheers to your vacation though! I'm definitely over-do for one myself. Last time I went anywhere it was to New Orleans like 8 years ago. Let me know what you think or what a better time would be. No worries... no hurries.

Gracias. I'll PM you by then and we can discuss the arrangements. Thank you much for helping me out my friend, and again, enjoy the idle time! I know what it's like to need to just kick off the shoes and relax for an extended break :D
