FSB increases to 1066MHz, but RAM stays at 800MHz. They must use a multiplier for the RAM. I don't understand why they'd do this, and include faster memory when they don't even take advantage of it.

The performance differences between different memory speeds and latencies are absolutely tiny.
Yes it would be nice to have the extra performance "for free" - but it's so slight that it's not worth worrying about.

Hey guys, I have a question regarding OC'ing my GPU.

So far I'm using EVGA Precision, I've optimized it so that it runs under 63c. However, all the benefits that I reaped was an increase of 1 FPS in Mass Effect!

Is it worth OC'ing the GPU? If so, what programs do you guys use? What settings? Thanks in advance.

VLC has launched the latest version of its open media player which can use the power of the Nvidia GPU to decode HD videos in real time leaving the CPU cold...

    VideoLAN - VLC 1.1.0 release

It works perefectly on the M11X guys!

Hi people, for those who want more then 7 hours of battery life,
you have to disable all the ports and stuff in the BIOS and you can not
OC the system. This will get you more then 7 hours. But this is pretty useless because i need to use some ports :D .Also if you want to increasing it even more then you will have to turn off the nvidia 330GT graphics card. And the wallpaper, screensaver, aero effects and alot of other things.Max I achieved was 8 hours and 49 minutes. Also this is my first post :)

Are there any options which need to be enabled to get this to work? I'd prefer to use VLC as opposed to MPC:HT, but I'd need to know what the methodology is for switching decoding to the GPU.

    Edit: Or is it automatic?

I disabled Bluetooth and WWAN and I got an extra 10 or 15 minutes. What else do you disable? I also dont use OCing and I get only 4 hours. Is it because of the Aero? Maybe its using the GPU.

Wiki for what? If you use the search function, Within the thread itself, it should be quick to find what you are looking for...

    Thanks,

I think he's talking about a wiki for the optimization thread. There are a lot of useful information scattered within the pages of this thread and it would be nice to have them organized and categorized. (maybe in the 1st page) =)

For the meantime, I suggest that those interested in optimizing their m11x try to browse through the pages...like I did from start to end. =p

Try going into msconfig again and unchecking "hstart", "Softthinks Launcher", and "ToasterLauncher".

Hey, I just re-installed my m11x (R1). How can i get the hybrid graphic icon on the notification area ? Press FN+F6 but cant see the change. In the device manager / display, both cards are there but easy to notice if we have the icon. Everything else works fine. I have looked around to find how to get it! Any help ? Thanks.

Install the R1 drivers from dell. That will get you your notifications back.

I installed the latest version of VLC and all my 1080p videos still studder. Is there any other setting in VLC that I need to do to stop the studdering as I don't really want to switch to another video player?

Try using the nVidia GPU to play, then. The Intel GPU driver might not be recent enough to properly support DXVA...

I did have the graphics switched to the Nvidia when I was trying to play the 1080p file.
Sorry, I'm new to all of this.

hmm..... I guess VLC doesn't work, then :( [I don't know how it works, though :p]

I use MPC-HC. You can actually use Haali media splitter, and windows media foundation will properly decode it (for Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center). I had a R1 unit and it was fine with either solution.

Ok I'll try that then. I saw the tutorial on that but had a question on one of the setting in the below section:

"Now move to the field Playback > OUTPUT. Here we need to our Direct Show preference, and this is the most important task for you to setup.

Windows XP users, select Overlay Mixer, VMR7, VMR9 or VMR9 renderless
Windows Vista users, select EVR or EVR custom renderer"

Which setting do we use if we have Windows 7?

Is this about MPC-HC or VLC?

MPC-HC doesn't need configuration to use DXVA

    I don't know about VLC.

Ah... that's no longer relevent. The default renderer utilizes DXVA, wherever it can (even where it's not very useful, like MPEG2 video acceleration) (EVR Custom Preset).

Can someone tell me how many processes they have running at idle? I've got roughly 80, with RAM usage of about 1.3GB. I've never installed Win 7 on any of my computers before so I'm completely new to most technical aspects of it, but compared to XP that just seems ridiculous.

It looks like at least 10 of them are from McAfee (top one using 80MB of RAM), so I can get rid of those once I get another anti-virus, but I'm sure every other anti-virus software must have a few of its own that need to run at all times.

Also, at least 5-6 are Alienware processes (I've already disabled AlienSense). While all the lighting features and customization things are neat, I'm starting to think they take up more resources than they're worth...

Don't worry - Windows 7 is specifically designed to use as much of your RAM as possible, in order to speed up the system. It moves as much data from slow disc to fast memory as it possibly can - everything is fine.
You can safely uninstall McAfee and then install http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ - it's free, and does an excellent job !
You don't really need to care about resources consumed by the various background tasks - those days are long gone. Modern systems are more than capable of dealing with their demands.

I have around 50 processes running at the background, consuming 3-6% in idle. While the multi-core cpu do handle well the multiple tasks, more cpu usage means also more heat, less battery stamina and less gaming performance...
So I kill everything unnecessary as usual.

BTW, agree with the MSE, combine this with the firefox (no script plug-in) and the defaut win7 firewall. I have got no problems till now.
