With regards to "you could get a cheaper brand better specs for the same price" you have to consider that Alienwares by comparison hold their value ALOT more than other brands. So even though money may be tight, i can assure you that it is indeed a worthwhile investment![]()
As for i5 VS i7, trust me you are not missing out on anything by getting the i5. Also unless you are using an external monitor @ 1080p for games with massive maps, you're not losing anything by getting 1GB GPU over the 2GB.
My M11x specs are in my sig, all-up that cost me $750 and it's replaced my 17.3" Asus gaming laptop as my main machine. I absolutely love it and you will too.
P.S. - As other have said, make sure you haggle like mad. Get a discount, get free NBD shipping, and get free warranty or something thrown in. Make them EARN your business.
-
Hey Moose, as you see from the responses you came to the right place to ask these questions. I'm sure that you'll learn lots from these responses.
I suggest it would be just worth thinking over if you actually want an 11 inch laptop. You may have already thought about that but I didn't read anywhere in your OP about a need for portability; which is where the M11x excels. Obviously the M11x is much more powerful (and bigger) than other 11 inches but you could get a bigger, more powerful laptop for about the same price.
If you still really want the M11x, then I can definitely recommend it. I love my little R2 and it has done me proud over the last coming up to 2 years I have owned it. I realise that price is a big barrier but I would advise trying to grab an i5 R3. These are great machines and a definite improvement in all areas over its predecessors. I have compared my R2 and a friends R3 and it just feels more refined and overall a better machine. The upgraded GPU and CPU should help to prolong its service life as well.
Make sure to keep a look out for refurbished units in the Outlet, the marketplace here on NBR and eBay, because that is where you will find the bargains. Good luck Moose and I hope you can find what you are looking for. -
All the comments regarding there may be a lot better deals for a lot better prices. This maybe true.
But it still wont be an Alienware
+ You will not find another model with as good battery life and as small with this hardware in an 11 inch netbook. Sager/Clevo are looking to chuck out a better model but Alienware have released 3 revisions of the M11 for the sole reason, it works and works very well. I have had numerous netbooks and small notebooks and they all pack the Atom + ION. The I-5 with the 540M GT is something else entirely. -
thanks everyone for the comments. I didnt think about asking for next day delivery or a better warranty today I just thought about the actual machine. They seemed pretty polite and took your advice about what specs to get. I was basically quoted for the specs i found for 700 in my previous post. I will try again tomorrow with delivery and warranty he he.
Yes I do need it for portability as my work becomes more demanding I am required to head abroad more and work both from home and the studio.
Its really nice to hear that people have great opinions. When I researched initially I just got lots of flaming about the machine saying alienware were a combination of overpricing and bad parts.
As for the comment about if im poor surely there are better things to do...well no, I earn what money I have by working 10 hours a day and when I get a chance to switch off for half an hour or a day. I spend it playing video games and drawing. But I understand where your coming from.
T-rav I defo understand what you mean about the nokia phone! Lots of people said they were too bulky laptops but I like that they are solid feeling. I hate mac air because I feel like its going to snap, plus its actually uncomfy in my hands to me.
I found one on a local ad site which I contacted today which was r2, its really cheap at £200 which leads me to believe there may be something wrong with it or Im lucky lol. He has provided photos of it working which is something.
Ah...Thank you so much for all the help. I guess its going to be the R3 If nothing else comes up. I will keep you posted about what happens on the phone again tomorrow! -
Worked for me twice -
Enjoy your purchase you wont regret it! -
frankly only faults i noticed were rather low quality thermal paste they used and that webcam hole isn't perfectly painted, it is a little bit off lol...
other than that don't get the intel wifi 1000 wireless card. it is crap. kept dropping connection with certain routers etc. had to change to a different one.
other than that, it is really easy to take apart, i have taken countless laptops apart, and m11x is definitely a breeze... cooling vent clogs up fairly quickly, but if you blow it clean once a month or two it should be totally fine. just hold the fan still with a needle or something so it doesn't get stuck or broken. -
lol Pre-purchase stress? After buying you'll feel after-purchase stress which isn't as much about the money, but more about the eternity waiting for it. I probably gained 5 pounds (I'm an impatient stress-eater) while waiting for my M11x,although it doesn't help that I was left PC-less while waiting for mine
-
Good to hear you took the plunge.
It'll suit you fine for quick bursts of Photoshop and 3D modelling... But with such a small workspace in 3D, you'll eventually go mad. lol.
I recommend connecting to an external monitor if you plan on long hours of 3D, but for a to do some blocking out and quick tests, it's fine.
All the best. -
I love my M11x R2. That being said given the chance I would probably trade it for an R3. That or a Sager NP6110 since it's roughly the same price and it has a stronger CPU and GPU. Shipping might be a pain, but you can always use a site like myus.com.
If you really want the best bang for you buck; get a desktop as your main rig and a cheap netbook. -
-
I have another question. Im expecting to play Diablo 3 on this little machine but from what I have found the mx11 cant play it out, it cant handle the physics properly from watching the youtube betas running on the r3 version. Is that the game or the machine? Perhaps because its beta?

hmmm im trying to buy it with the code i have for a discount but when i am reviewing it the process just says this:
Intel® Core i5 2467M (1.6GHz ,3MB Cache)
I thought it was able to turbo boost to 2,3GHz?
I read about that it defo has it but now im worried before clicking the buy button lol. Will I defo have that turbo boost?
this is what i chose. the cost is £728 in total. There is some discount and the better wireless card is in too.

Well trying to configure a laptop especially an expensive one can be a pain sometimes, and you find yourself doubting the choices you make
So to help everyone out who is thinking of buying an M11X r3 (myself included) I would ask the help of all those who already own an M11X to weigh in their Favorite options below and say why they would choose the ones they did
Internal High-Definition Surround Sound Audio (5.1) VS Soundblaster® X-Fi Hi Def Audio - (Software Enabled)
I know personally that it is just a software upgrade, is it worth it tho? does it take away from your precious FPS if you run it? and if yes how much if an impact are we looking at?
Killer Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 2x2 MIMO VS Intel® Centrino® AdvancedN + WiMAX 6250 a/g/n 2x2
(Is the Killer card really as good as they say it is? anyone who has it please let us know ur personal experience)
1 TB 5400RPM VS 750GB 7200RPM
(the reason I didn't mention SSD is cuz we ALL know it is the best, so if someone is choosing from the other two and no SSD option is available what would you choose?)
1GB DDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M Intel® Core i5 2467M (1.6GHz,2.3GHz,w/Turbo Boost, 3MB Cache) VS 2GB DDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M Intel Core i7 2637M 1.7GHz(2.8GHz w/Turbo Boost, 4MB Cache)
And last but not least at all, do you recommend to buy now or wait for when the R4 comes out? I know some will say it depends on if you want to wait or not, but my question is would the new possible Chips (CPU and GPU) give you enough of a difference to make the wait worth it?
And a BIG thanks to all who answer -
WRT to the 1TB 5400 vs 750GB 7200......
I use a 1TB on my Asus N55SF as it is a media laptop with gaming ability, however l bought if for it's excellent picture and sound1TB is ideal for plenty of media, and due to the platter density there is not much if any lose in performance.
750GB 7200 great for gaming on a gaming system such as the M11x r3, however never seen much impact wrt MW3/Skyrim/WOT on my 1TB 5400, however compared to my SSD on Desktop you get bored waiting for people to join.
So 1TB for Media/Gaming.
The more the merrier, l would check out the stats on the various 1TB 9.5mm 2.5" HDD.
I use the Samsung HN-M101MBB in my N55SF.
Regards.

7200RPM should be the absolute minimum for new models these days if anything a hybrid should be because 5400RPM is dire and far too slow for todays software which has large amount of data that needs to be loaded for instance Witcher 2 pushing 15GB.
The external sound blaster is for sure going to make a huge difference if you want external surround sound but the two built in speakers are fine when your on the go.
The Killer card is a bargain upgrade if you intend to game away from your hub, I found mine gave me two extra bars compared to my old Intel wireless card and a much lower ping which is important for online gaming.
As already mentioned to you I5 + 1GB 540M GT is the way to go, put the extra money towards things you need like an SSD, Killer card, neoprone case or bag. The I7 is sadly not worth the price and the extra 1GB VRam is totally and utterly useless on such a small display with such a low bandwidth. -
As others have said, that $200 could be put towards a 256GB SSD instead, just put another $50 into it.
If you're going to keep waiting for the 'better" stuff to come out, you will NEVER buy a PC/lappy. That's the sad truth. Just go for it. -
In regards to the R4 if it ever does come I can bet my bottom dollar it will come with a 640M and if the recent information about it are true the R4 will be an absolute monster, 64gb/s bandwidth and double the fillrate will be crazy fast in such a small model.
But yes you do need to make a decision and a choice sooner or later or you grow grey and old and are left with a 2nm chip the size of a peanut -
I guess I will force my self and wait till the end of July, better safe than sorry I guess
If it is going to be as big a monster as you say it should be (and prolly have more battery life and other bling) it will be worth the wait -
Do remember these models do not lose value, as long as you dont run a car over it you can easily sell it for near enough its value. I never wait because I dont mind having and then selling for something new after a year.
No point having nothing and just waiting foreverlifes too short.
As per what I said no one knows what the R4 is going to be so do not rely on what I or anyone else says. Its all rumour. -
I think i will wait, regardless of rumors it should be better in many ways, maybe even a better screen, plus it should be like 2-3 months max from now so not much of a wait, and if nothing happens (and that would be really dumb as the competition is gearing up already) by then i am sure the price would go down even lower, so I got nothing to lose... just need to be patient I guess, somehow -
They aren't even rumors based on leaked information or anything of that sort either, it is simply "Well there are new M14/17/18x's coming out, so surely an M11x too even though they haven't said anything about it!". All purely hearsay based on speculation. Nothing more. -
All I said is that i will wait since the ULV Ivy bridge should be out by then, if there will be an R4 then awesome and my wait was worth it.
if there wont be an R4 at that time then I will buy an R3 at a lower price cuz of the new chips that were released would lower the price anyways as it happened before.
win win the way i see it
oh and I forgot to mention that there has to be an m11x R4, it is a big seller for alienware and won a few awards, it will only mean more money to them so i dont see why not at all, and now that other competitors are rolling lil gaming monsters (Sager) of their own... i think Alienware is gonna have to hit back and hit back hard. -
I'm considering ordering a custom-built M11x R3 for my son, who will be attending college next year in pursuit of an engineering degree. What kind of configuration would I need to order so he can run all of his normal school applications, like Microsoft Office, and play games like Guild Wars 2, WOW, and Battlefield 3 and drive a 27" external monitor?
Also, what's it like to use an 11.6" screen. Seems a bit small for me, but I'm an old guy. LOL
Thanks! -
I5 2467
4GB Ram
540M GT 1gb
500/750GB HDD
That is the deal in the UK at the moment for £700.00. Call dell. He wont need the I7. Be warned games like Battlefield 3 running the latest Frostbite engine even the latest graphics card struggle with it so it will need to run native low-medium and Guild Wars 2 will need to be the same as well. World of Warcraft will run flat out with ease very well same for the majority of other games. The 11 inch screen at 720P is perfect especially if he intends to take it to college. -
Would he be better served with a refurbished M14x R1 with an i7 2630QM and a 1.5 GB GT 555M?
-
-
Thanks Yiddo. Okay, I just pulled the trigger on a refurbished M11x R3. Here's the configuration:

Are these specs okay or did I screw something up? I didn't have time to check back with you because Dell removes any refurbished purchases after 15 minutes. -
Very nice if you can afford it the I7 now it is the way to go. I was against it at first saying that the I5 was enough but now I think otherwise and maybe wish I could have pulled off a deal on it because the I7 owners can laugh in the face of those that said dont do it because if the R3 is the last model that is now the most powerful setup you can get.
The 6GB Ram is a sweet spot and it leaves the door open to upgrade to 8GB by removing the 2GB slot.
The Killer is a must have for any gamer on wireless and the 750GB will do nicely and can still be upgraded to an SSD if you need it to.
You will be very pleased with it I assure you of thatStealth black is much nicer than the RED IMO too
-
Yiddo, I'm a little confused. One of the members on the M14x forum says I made a bad move and should have opted for the refurbished M14x R1, which has a more powerful CPU and GPU .
-
As mentioned on the other page the difference is quite obvious if you want a gaming laptop you can carry around with you in a draw string bag, which is small and portable and powerful enough for everything you throw at it you want an m11x so if your son intends to use it at Uni its a must have. The M14x is more powerful because it is a lot bigger and bulkier and is not portable you would need a carry bag for it and it will chew up the battery much faster. I always look at the M14x as in between a gaming netbook and a high end gaming laptop, it sings mid range all the way but it is still for use as a small desktop replacement, the M11x sits in a class of its own. -
Thanks for your help Yiddo. Unfortunately, I decided to cancel my order. Quite frankly, the screen size was always a concern and then when Thornox mentioned the reduced processing power that cast me into doubt city.
I really wish Alienware had a better way of identifying the newness of their systems.
-
Shame I really think the M14x wont be portable enough and it is a lot bulkier than most think in comparison to the mini M11x. The screen resolution is barely different as well so the 3 extra inches is not as major as you think. Do take a look at my review here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/654274-m11x-r3-review-yiddo.html
Big is not always better and as I mentioned the I7 ULV is as powerful as a 720QM quad core processor but runs extremely efficient with very low power consumption which means 5-6 hours battery life. You will not get that on the M14x.
Good luck with your purchase whatever you choose
-
Thanks Yiddo. I appreciate your help. Right now my son is big into Guild Wars 2, so I was concerned about his ability to play that on the M11x R3. Plus, his eyesight is not great either, so I was also concerned about the 11.6" screen. My other son has a 13" MacBook and while that works great for him, it's a little small for me. I prefer 15" screen myself, but I'm an old guy.
-
Guilds wars 2 is going to be intensive sadly the 555M GT may not produce the results you are hoping for, it will require a high end GPU for maximum settings so again the difference in performance may not be worthwhile. The 540M GT in the M11x running at 720P will probably be similiar to the 555M GT in the M14x running at 900P.
Alas I fear I cannot change your mind again people twist the minds of others by saying bigger is betterI have the Clevo in my signature sitting upstairs in my draw unused and gathering dust for the sole reason that my M11x is so awesome the beast of the graphics card in it (6990M) cannot match the awesomeness of this little monster!
Enjoy the M14x. -
So I kept refreshing the Dell Outlet tidy and was able to snag a Refurbished R3.
Alienware M11x R3
- Intel® Core i7 2617M (2.6GHz/4MB cache)
- Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
- 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
- Mobile Intel® QS67 Chipset
- 320GB SATA hard drive (7200RPM)
- Intel® Wireless-N WiFi Link 1000 a/g/n 1x2 (Standard)
- Stealth Black with Soft Touch Finish
With taxes & free shipping it came to $974.00, I'm very happy. Would have like Bluetooth, but not an issue. The HDD isn't a big deal either as I forsee upgrading to an SSD down the road.
But the Intel 1000 wi-fi, how bad is it? Should I look into an upgrade? If so, which card?
Also, the R3 will be placing my two year old, out of warranty, R1 with the overclocked SU 7300, 4gb ram, 320 HDD, and GT 355m. The battery is totally shot. Three screws on the bottom late wouldn't screw back in after getting off an hour long call with dell support, they don't appear to stripped but just won't screw in their holes. Do you think I'd be able to ask for $300 for my R1 with those two issues on eBay? -

Hey Yiddo, what is your opinion on the Sager NP6110? Would you buy one over M11x r3? As for me...I just don't know yet....
-
If the Sager came with a backlit keyboard and a ULV CPU I would easily be bought the reason I do not like the 45watt quad that is offered is because I like to have my M11x running at high performance the majority of the time and because the ULV is only 17watts this is possible and also the heat that it would produce would be detrimental in the long term. At this time the Sager does not offer a ULV so I am an M11x man through and through.
Even so the choice was simple for me we do not have the sager in the UK at the moment and after getting my M11x R3 my views were confirmed I would not change this for the sager any day.
Your choice really depends on what is most important to you if you are after performance at the possible sacrifice of battery and heat (fan noise) and do not care for the lack of fancy features lights and backlit keyboard the Sager is the way to go because it will beat it hands down performance wise. If you want an Alienware like the rest of us did then you will get the M11x and you will be very pleased you did.
The I5/I7 ULV + 540M GT can run anything thrown at it Skyrim like a pro and even BF3 so for me with all the other features and my Clevo for my major gaming it has everything I need and if you look back over the last few people that bought one they will tell you the same.
I could talk all dayAnything else you need to know I should cover here.
you got the I7 as well for the that price you cannot complain we are still paying £1k over here for the I7 version Dell are selling.
The Intel Wifi has its problems but so do other wireless cards and it is a very cheap and simple upgrade to a Killer N so dont worry if you dont like it $25 and you can just fit the new card in easily.
List your R1 on ebay at the price you want and allow offers, just be completely truthful about it. -

Cool Yiddo, Btw I almost bought a g74 jh back in 2010...lol...until I found out about Alienware laptops. I would love to buy an Alienware M11x - r4 in the future if Dell decided going back to 11.6 laptop. The reason why i want to buy an Alienware laptop again is the build quality, backlit, the style is just awesome, and the advanced plan is one of the best warranty out there. Btw, money is not a problem for me.
-
Had the G70S, G71/72 and G73JH before moving away. They are stylish laptops but Alienware comes with a lot of additional features that make them worth paying for, the price wont be much difference to what Asus charge either and you will get better performance to go with it.
The discussion on the R4 is saying Dell are going to move to Ultrabooks so it depends if that is more your interest personally I like the M11x style so it is not for me. I couldn't do without my Clevo however I am greedy and require both because its too big for the portable tasks and travelling.
You could get a Clevo/Sager and M11x for the same price as an M18x if that is what you are considering. Sager sort out a backlit keyboard and CPU options in their 11 inch models and I might reconsider but ULV is a must have. -
is a R4 expected? I really wanted an R3.
-
Love my R3 more and more each day so if you are considering one get it fast before they go. Some new are still available from dell or the outlet and on Ebay.
I will be protecting mine with my life -
Just a word of warning for all those considering an R3.
I have had mine for 3 months and the soft touch paint is peeling on most of the corners.
Still a fantastic computer, love it.
Dell gave me a curtosy call a few days ago, I had noticed the peeling a day before-hand. Anyway, a tech is coming out today to replace the casing.
My concern was that it would peel even further... The rep on the phone was very helpful.
I'm sad it's become discontinued. I'd happily buy an updated model in the future. and I hope Dell release a new revision in the years tom come.
EDIT: Sorry, trying to upload pics, keeps timing out. -
good advice. bought through outlet. now to get an ssd.
-
I still have an old KIngston SATA II so cannot warrant the upgrade but when I do thats the one I will pick up. -
thx but I got an Intel. Looks like I could have saved about $100 going with the Crucial. We'll see how performance is as I have another SSD for comparison sake.
-
do dell still offer the m11x here in the us? or has it been completely discontinued?
