Not sure if the thread's just messing up for me, but this is the "last" post i can see in this thread. I can see there's a page 6 with more responses, but clicking on it just refreshes page 5.

No, nobody on this forum has yet to do a watercooler mod. The main reason being that there is absolutely no space -AT ALL- to accommodate any part of it inside the chassis, so any watercooling setup would render the laptop unmovable and would all have to be an external setup.

IMO not viable at all, i couldn't possible imagine any scenario where you'd need a M11x for portability and then perform a mod which removes the portability.

Purely a "because you can" type of project.

really? from what i see it seems like the best of both portability and cooling since he only added the tubing? it still has the fan system too right, (Do forgive me if im being ignorant im not the most tech savvy just point me to where im making stupid assumptions

That may be but it isnt practical. From a day to day POV it will not gain you anything... the limitations right now are not really cooling. As a project? Why not? Go for it.... but recognize what your goals are and if it will help you.

I suspect connecting/disconnecting on a regular basis will be an issue and hard on parts.

Definitely going to be giving this a try on my i5 R3. Will be using different heat sinks though. I don't have overheating problems but if I can make my laptop run cooler why not do it?

Well finished this mod and my temps are exactly the same. Might be because of the heat sinks I used. Disappointed.

Remember, the heatsink mod much of the time doesnt help gaming temps, it helps when running on the intel gpu.

The intel gpu doesnt make alot of heat, but its enough to make the fan kick on. With the heatsink mod, the heat is removed well enough passively to prevent the fan from needing to be used.

if you didnt cut the fan shroud your temps will be the same after heatsoak.

if you dont have air moving across the new copper the mod basically becomes pointless under load because once the new copper soaks up heat the heat only radiates slowly away. if you actively cool the new copper you should notice some difference.

I did do the fan mod as well. Cut the shroud to allow airflow. Temps are the same.

Just played a few games and monitored my temps. They've actually gotten worse and my laptop actually feels much warmer to the touch than before. Going to revert back to a stock heat sink.

If it had not been tried your experience is pretty much what I would expect. Normally, the whole idea is to get the heat to channel through the heat pipe and then out the case.

If the mod is sound, then assumptions:
What is happening is you are relying on your case to remove the heat. There must be SOMETHING missing in the fan mod as obviously the added heat sinks are working.

Did you take pics? Maybe someone can spot the trouble.

sounds like the heat is building up inside your case. without a way for the heat to escape the temp would technically be worse.

did you remove the felt material that covers the speaker grilles?

Yes I did, removed the felt along with the fan mod.

I have a M11x R3 i5 and I might give the Liquid cooling idea a go! I have a Cooler Master U1 Cooling Pad that I always use and I might use an external pump and kind of build the U1 Cooling Pad onto the Base of my M11x and fit the parts in there. Or maybe attach a smaller battery and use the extra space for the pump. Could you show me the equipment I would need to set it up? Not sure where to find a pump or tubing for a laptop. Also how do these temps sound for a M11x R3?

    Idle
    CPU 45-50C
    GPU 35-40C

    Gaming
    CPU 68-75C
    GPU 65-70C

I just cleaned out the fan and replaced the thermal with ANTEC Formula 7 Nana Diamond Thermal Compound.
    Thanks!
