And warranty! We don't have to ship our systems for weeks and pay for shipping too ;)

I agree. Still, 600 bucks (if HTWingNut's values are correct, I didn't check) is a big difference.

I would actually pay the premium for AW because a proper warranty is a must for me, since it would become my work computer.

Furthermore, those values might be true for US but in Europe things are altogether different. I have to check...

I'll have to agree with someone that said they may come out with a new one when the Ivy bridge processors are finally released for the bottom ends. We all know that Intel always releases the four core first, then the Duo core.

If that was true, they would wait until that moment to make a press release. They absolutely will not make a statement stating that they are "phasing out and discontinuing" a product and then later say "woops sorry guys, we're actually coming out with a new revision!".

Chance of there being an R4 m11x after they've officially discontinued the M11x line... 0%.

I really dont think the m11x is gone for good.

Alienware made this computer for 2 years, its by far the most popular alienware made due to its power and price points.

Now, with everything switching over to touch screens and tablets, and with the intro to win8. I forsee a new m11x coming out. Its going to be either a ultra book, or some sort of tablet pc.

We will see a direct interface with other alienware laptops/desktops, so the new m11x can be used as a remote control for media center apps. It could be used as a wireless game pad for the laptops/desktops.

Image if you will, the razers laptop keyboard thing with the little lcds in it. Now, take that and put it into a full 10-11 inch lcd, coupled with the possablity of running your mini map or really anything else on the tablet screen. I dont really play more than a few games so I dont know what you guys want on a screen... but for me, I would like a mini map, health, ammo, quick launch for weapons with pictures of each one. List of my squad mates and info on their status.

The system would be able to stand alone to play games, or used as a wireless screen for your main gaming machine, complete with customizable controls, and ingame info.

ok, im done dreaming and ranting :)

Sure, the possibilities are there, but it simply doesn't seem plausible given that it's been officially discontinued.

If they released an R4, it would quite literally open them up to law suites from people who purchased an R3 unit because they were under the impression that it was going to be the "last" M11x revision ever made.

The legal implications of saying something and doing something completely different for a business... can be absolutely crippling. I simply do not think they are going to take that chance.

I dont think it will be like the m11x, it may be similar in size, but it wont be a m11x.

I don't know Alienware's financial situation, but the M11x was probably the model with the least profit margin. Sounds like they decided to cut some fat.

While yes, the m11x may have a low profit margin, how many people here got the m11x as their first alienware?

Then moved on to the larger more powerfull models.

I know I did. After getting my m11x, I loved it and the brand design so much that I ordered the tactx mouse, keyboard, headphones, optx lcd, and just recently a brand new x51.

After my experiance with the m11x, I got one for my wife, recommended it to my friends and plan on getting a larger model laptop sometime soon.

Think of the m11x as more of a "free sample" if you liked this one, you will love our more powerful models!

Wait a minute. Where did you guys see that Dell is officially discontinuing the M11x?

I've been one of the most vocal against Dell's decision, and I also believe they are phasing out the M11x, but I haven't seen an official announcement.

If my cpu upgrade works on my r1, then there may be hope for the r3 guys to upgrade to a newer cpu/gpu.

The board wont be able to handle the Ivy CPU's and the 540M GPU you cannot remove so its a no go. Wish I had gone I7 now though has become a very good upgrade for those that chose it.

Ivy is backwards compatible with sandy, so I would think it should work....but it its a pretty big gamble if it doesn't . I would hate to see somebody lose their nice new r3, I will try to find a broken r3 to test if I get my r1 cpu upgrade working.

Also you can remove the 540 and replace it. It just requires the proper tool.

Well I love my "new" r3, the i5-2467M is enough considering l came from an HP 311c and a HP DM1-3103ea, even with the damaged audio port that l am going to live (nice chat with dell) with as this little monster only cost me £490 inc vat and del.

Pity it is being phased out however l am sure it will get plenty out of it before moving on

Although it was said that backward compatible it will not fit the older motherboards it has been confirmed it does not work in the motherboard my Clevo has which is a HM67. Ivy is a tick process not a tock.

Also you would not be able to get the firmware or the Vbios to be able to do either.

A few weeks ago it was not ;) but seeing as this is the last model you now have the most powerful M11x you can get!

Decided to go buy one even though they're getting phased out. I'm sick of making compromises on purchases.

I really wanted a comfortable keyboard on my main laptop, the P150 has an ok non-backlit keyboard but it's not extraordinary.

I wanted something fairly light <2kg for my work laptop, I went with the 3350 because Dell had a $500 off special.

This time I get the exact Alien i wanted. :)

How disappointing. At least I have closest to the highest end possible (i7, 8gb RAM, 256SSD, Win 7 Pro). I was hoping the new model would improve performance but run with less noise. Still, Skyrim playable with 4x AA, in bed. Can't argue with that. 0 :)

Even worse is how you can't get an SSD solo option in the new m14x only dual? SSDs or SSD boot drives.

On the m14x, you can install your own msata boot drive if you dont wana order the double... just get a base model drive, then do your own.

I havent looked at any of the options of it yet, but im sure you can get a top spec with a base spec hdd.

I am hating to see this one go. I got the R1 a few months back after swapping back to the middle east work wise. Needed something light and portable that could game when I was away from home over a month at a time. A larger laptop is out of the question as they have a 20 lbs on baggage on the helicopter to the rig. I may have to see about picking up a R3 here soon.

Something else to look at as a option is the Clevo W110ER/Sager NP6110 if your looking for something far more powerful than the R3 with the same size.
It will support IVB and come with a Nvidia 650M.
Yeah it doesn't have the backlit keyboard or look as good but it's another option, I was hoping the R4 would have these specs or at least somthing close but...DELL says nope!
This is now the only option that's available looking ahead, not hating the R3 just wish there was a R4.

Well, I think considering the M14x came with IVB and GT 650m and Clevo with similar specs to M14x (granted 650m in M14x has GDDR5 vs DDR3 in Clevo) it's hard to justify an M11x with anything less, but competes directly with the M14x.

Now if the M14x gets the 660m when it comes out, then come out with an M12x with a GT 650m DDR3, that would be sweet.

The M11x doesn't compete directly with the M14x. It can't. Even if the GPUs were similar (I doubt they could fit a GDDR5 650m in the M11x), we're talking about dual-core vs. quad-core, and 11.6 inches of screen vs. 14 inches. Size and weight are also quite different.

If I had buttloads of money, I'd buy both: the M14x would be my main laptop, while the M11x would be my portable machine to take to conferences, in-laws' house, etc. Since I'm not that rich, I'd probably buy the M14x only if they were sold here, but I still think the M11x is a unique machine.

That Clevo is using a quad core. And 650m DDR3 vs GDDR5 is too close in performance to have a separate line. OEM's don't like to cross performance boundries between machines in the same brand. You even said if you had to choose between M11x and M14x you would keep the M14x. There's not enough to differentiate the two really.

I can see the point of your other arguments, but this one has no sense in it. Just because I wouldn't keep the M11x doesn't mean it is similar to the M14x. It just means that I have needs for two different machines (one main laptop, one smaller portable laptop), and the former is more important for me than the latter.

Another example: suppose I didn't have a gaming desktop. Then I might want both the M11x (for portability) and the M17x (for gaming power). If I didn't have enough money for both, I'd probably keep the M17x. Does that mean the M17x competes in the M11x's market?

It doesn't matter, no OEM will provide performance competing laptops in the same line, especially Alienware. Doesn't make sense.

I think your right that the shouldn't, but they always do. Example HP envy 15 vs 17 (non 3D). Same exept for screen size. Apple 15" vs 17", again same exept for screen size. HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Asus "business" lines have always canibalized thier own sales with too many models and not enough difference.

Yup. Pulled from Malaysian site also. Only have M14..... "or" Inspiron 13z & XPS 13 ultrathingamabob.

Poked around and its not showing in searches or old links.

Extra tidbit: non of the larger screen ones are there either. Last time this happened though it changed back and forth for a while.

It was recently pulled from their "premium" event though (lets you save an extra 100 dollars off the i7 system).

    For its size, maybe. :)

What I meant was that a 11.6 inch panel should be rounded up to 12, not down to 11. But I agree that the size of the laptop itself is similar to most 13-inchers.

I noticed some saying that this does not 100% indicate phasing out of M11x series.
It is true M11x did not get any upgrades or refresh but how is this the indication of phasing out of M11x?
Before the release of M11x R3, M11x R2 became unavailable for one or two months in South Korea and in Hong Kong.
Some says that once Ivy Bridge settles down, M11x R4 might be released either in Q3 earliest or Q4 of 2012.
This is rumor, of course, but the assumptions you guys are making are rumor as well.
Let's wait until Dell makes official notice.

Perhaps since the Ivy Bridge dual cores are delayed, it may pop up once they start shipping. However, why not continue to sell R3 then?

Probably the same reasons they had before discontinuing M11x R2 before the release of M11x R3 if M11x R4 is to be released in the later future. I am not too sure about what the reasons were, probably something to do with stopping abundant supplies or something. No one knows for sure, this is just a pure guess but I am sure all of us wish this to happen...

If this is true, I can picture the Dell big-shots rubbing their hands in amusement with the hype that has been generated.

This does make some sense. For the other laptops, they refreshed the GPUs and continued to sell them, knowing that SB CPUs can soon start to be replaced with an unnamed component. In the M11x such an unnamed component will take longer to show up because the dual-core versions of that unnamed component are not scheduled until later in 2012.

Haha gotta love Dell cashing in on this. I assume that is a model that requires their own custom made Samsung £400 RAM and the I7 which is worth £600 compared to the £300 I5.

    Muggings.

So obvious haha it was probably a stock return out of box and they just loaded it with extra's to make profit.

Sad if only they put their thieving marketing into an R4 I would be happy :)

At least the R3 runs World of Tanks well so I dont care :)
