You mean M11xR2? Then yes. I'm curious about the new AES instruction also, but ATM truecrypt doesn't support it, only bit-locker does and it doesn't seem to bring significant improvement yet either.
-
Haha, you're a mindreader - that was exactly why I was asking. TC is supposedly going to work on it though, according to their site.
-
Hey guys, this is my first post here. Anyways, I am very interested in the M11x R2, now that they come with the newer CPU's.
I am a user who would greatly benefit from the more powerful CPU's offered with the R2. I intend to not only use it for gaming, but also for music production/live performance with Ableton Live 8, and DJing with Traktor or Serato. The i7 640um should be able to handle these applications pretty well, yes? I would be using an external sound card, btw.
Also, I noticed that people mentioned that the r2 lacks a VGA port. Surely there will still be a way to connect it to a VGA monitor, right?
Thank you! -
Let me answers your 2nd question first, because it's easier, but also a bad news. M11xR2 have 2 video output, Display port and HDMI. Both of them output digital signal by nature, VGA on the other hand is analog. Meaning you won't find a simple adapter that change HDMI to VGA. That said, there probably will be a powered type adapter later, but I don't expect them to be cheap and easily portable that you just put in the same notebook bag. On the other hand chance are you can get a USB external video card that output to VGA. But it will act like 2nd monitor on 2nd video card.
On your first question, well I'm not an audio expert/artist so I'm not sure how good the CPU will do to those software. I have not even heard of those software either(sorry). But, if the softwares you will be using need something powerful or designed to be well threaded, then I would rather suggest something bigger, like 13" or 14" w/ i7-720QM, this CPU is mobile quad-core w/ HT so, 8 threads total. It's powerful enough, as good as Q6600 desktop quad core. But the downside is this CPU is quite power hungry and you won't get much battery out of it. I wouldn't recommend 11" for using it as heavy production machine either. The resolution is quite low, but then I use bigger machine for stuff like photoshop. If your software have bunch of little buttons and knobs, then 11" may not be for you. As far as CPU on the M11xR2 wise, you won't find any faster CPU w/ good battery life than this. -
I thought the MACs had a little adaptor for VGA? They also use the video port right?
-
I'd rather pick it up locally!
-
I don't know, the only adapter that I'm aware of is DVI to VGA adapter, but there is a catch. That DVI have to send the signal out in analog mode also. If that DVI is digital only, it won't work. If you look at monoprice for the VGA adapter then you will see what I mean.
-
can you watch 1080p videos with just the integrated graphics? What's the battery life with just the integrated graphics and surfing the web via wifi, watching movies, no gaming, etc?
-
This is exactly what I intend to be using mine for as well. My 1.5ghz core2duo xps1330 with 2gb ram was able to handle this kind of software no problem, and the m11x with i7 with 4gb ram will be better. Provided you are not running an insane amount of vst's, you shouldn't have a problem. Bouncing some vst instruments to an audio track will free up cpu for when you're playing live. Using your production tracks live isn't the greatest habit to get into anyway, you should always streamline your tracks so not as much stuff has to be done on the fly. Nothing worse than a hiccup/stutter during a performance.
I predominantly use Reason and Record for my music production and as long as you don't expect to run a heap of stuff at once, you should be fine. Just plug the computer into a larger monitor when at home. You won't need a big screen when playing somewhere and actually the size-to-power ratio of this computer should be good for this task.
Just don't expect it to be your main production machine. -
did Dell fix the hinge issue in the R2?
-
i hope so my r2 is planned for delivery Thursday June 17th
-
no hinge issues with my m11x :] its perfect minus the super glare screen. but i got a anti-glare filter i bought coming in. i got it for $2 so i'll post up b4 and after pictures in a thread when i get it
-
According to Intel, you should be. That said, the LCD isn't 1080p and don't expect hardware to decode non-H.264 format.
Isn't that's the hardware damage? Or is it a design issue?
Last I seen on this thread, it kinda look like hardware damage. -
post up the link for the $2 anti-flare filter
-
well the problem with that is that i dont think it's anti-flare lol. XD but its a $2 anti-glare filter thats for 15 inch screens. im thinking of cutting it to fit for the m11x. we'll see how it goes.
-
since dell has removed all vga/dvi outputs, do you guys think they will include an adapter?
-
I doubt it. The manual states that adapters will be available on their website. I ordered the Cables To Go DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter.
CABLESTOGO 8IN DISPLAYPORT TO DVI-D ADAPT DVI-D FEM X DISPLAYPORT MALE 1080I : Desktop Accessories | Dell -
Sweet, just check on my order status and the EDD changed from 7/9/2010 to 6/17/2010. Can't wait!!
-
Monoprice has much better prices on DP to DVI cables and I've always been more than happy with the quality of their products.

Where can you find this info?
My order status doesn't list the order because it was with EPP.
The only thing I can see is this: https://support.dell.com/support/order/LookupInformation.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~mode=popup - and it doesn't have an EDD -
I wonder if they are updating all the orders to the 17th. Where are getting it shipped to? Anyone elses order get updated?
-
I also ordered through EPP and there was no order status in my login. So I googled "dell order status" and click on the 1st link or
https://support.dell.com/support/order/GlobalOrderHome.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
Then from your confirmation email, enter the info for an update on your status. Mine originally listed as 7/9 and today when I check it shows 6/17. -
Nope, mine still says EDD 7/8/2010. Mine was ordered on 6/10/10. For those of you who had it changed, when did you guys order it?
Regards,
K -
I ordered mine on 6/9/10 and just noticed the update today. Now sure how far down the queue you are from those who ordered the day before. But I say keep checking.
-
Okay that's fine. I don't need the system anytime soon really. I was just curious when it happened because I remember when the m11xR1 came out, some people who ordered AFTER the initial people got their orders faster. So, I was wondering if anyone who had their changed EDD ordered their's after me.
Regards,
K -

sorry about the double post idk what happened. -
Does anyone else's order status still say "in production"? Mine does and my credit card has yet to be charged. Do they usually charge it when the order is placed or shipped?
-
Placed. They wouldn't build it unless they had the money for it.
-
Bummer, returned my m11xr1 to buy the R2 only to find out my school wants us all to get Macs...that being said anyone wanting iOmega Slim drive ( $60 from Dell) for their new lappy make a reasonable offer. I maybe used this thing two or three times. Thanks ceolwulf for the heads up!!
-
Ohh, my refund for the Alienware is gonna be partly on a gift card, so I may be trading that in to those interested. These macs are so friggin expensive.. and for what!?
GO HUSKIES!! excited for the new semester -
Has your card been charged?
-
well for Debit cards they do an authorization, and then disappears after a couple days and officially charged when it ships. For CC's maybe they do a auth check but you can't see? I dunno.
-
Why not run a hackintosh on your M11xR2?
-
lack of drivers. but watch out or you'll have the hackintosh mods on us
-
Yea my order says in production. i got mine on DPA so wont be able to know if they charge my card. i ordered 06/11/10 says delivery date is 07/14/10 shipping on 07/08/10. Waiting a month is gonna be lame heh.
-
yeah mine says 7/8, lol how awesome would that be if they bumped up the shipping date
-
Yea that would be pretty awesome.
-
Drivers are there
I won't discuss it anymore.
-
That worked thanks, and once again great job Dell for forcing your customers to use google in order to get order status.
Mine is still "In Production" with 7/7/2010 EDD -
Frags im in the same boat as you! I am waiting for benchmarks for this and the Envy14. Serato doesn't need much as it states it needs only a G4 1.5 apple to run serato, so im thinking the M11xr2 should be fine, still I would wait for benchmarks because I think Traktor might need more power because its a bigger program with more effects built in.
System minimum requirements for serato
Intel processor, 1.5 GHz or better
and for MAC
1 GHz G4
We should be okay!
Also when plugging the M11xr2 into a 25" hdmi monitor.. with the res set to 1920 x 1080 will it have higher fps or lower?... :\ -
Bit the bullet - Estimated Delivery Date: 7/8/2010
BTW - I've ordered hundreds of computers through Dell and they always deliver before the EDD. -
I"m also waiting for Envy 14 information.. although starting to consider the i7-640UM since I can sell and rebuy with probably only a $50 loss
-
Dude, today is Sunday in the US, give it some rest. I'm sure that not everyone of Dell employee work on Sunday. I wouldn't expect order status being updated on Sunday.
-
Just gonna take a jab at the MHz requirement, I guess since i7-640UM is rated at 1.2GHz, I guess it won't work for serato. So, we should be clear that MHz doesn't every mean much any more.
-
NOTE: this cable don't support signal from VCR, COMPUTER or LAPTOP output.
-
New Zealand DELL M11xR2 models include McAfee(r) Anti-virus software as part of the deal.
No big deal you say, they all do and who checks or cares.
But in New Zealand maybe we should care and look closer....
McAfee(R) Security Center - 15 Months Version [Included in Price]
YES, it's 15 months!!!!
So looking at the M11xR1 (SU4100/SU7300) a 15 month McAfee package costs NZD65.
This means if you don't require McAfee software you should be able to discount NZD65 from your price before you even get going.
I'm sure DELL would squeal like a stuck pig when you question this, but hay!
Price hikes by stealth. You've got to hand it to DELL for trying.
Bad DELL, Bad DELL!!!! -
Are you, in the US? particularly, CA? lol
Im just excited as well. -
As CoolMod said, read the description please. I don't even know what can be use with that cable.
This product is simply an adapter, not a converter. It doesn't convert digital signal to analog signal. I guess if somebody brought it and doesn't work, he/she should blame tears. -
Yup, I'm located in San Jose, CA. The only sad part is that I forgot to get the free next business day shipping. Ugh, I'm at the mercy of ground shipping.
