is how much i paid using epp -
I've been running multiple fairly hefty financial models (5-10 Meg excel files) and macro heavy word docs at the same time with zero issues, even when non-overclocked.
Ditto a little light photoshopping (albeit it vintage ps5.0 and at 5 mp resolutions). If you're hauling around large files in cs4 I can see there may be a hit, although I'll bet at large sizes ram as well as CPU comes into play.
So I agree if you're a heavy multimedia user the core it rationale comes into play. But if you're a heavy multimedia user the m11x ain't the machine for you in the first place!
J -
Neil how much would you be wanting for your current m11x and what are the specs on it? thanks
-
From the NZ site MX11 design page: "Available in Soft-Touch Black or Lunar Shadow and highlighted by an exclusive AlienFXTM illuminated keyboard."
Both NZ and Malaysia have i3 as an option but not soft-touch even though it is mentioned on the design page. -
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
-
is this in the US Dell EPP site? -
I have 8gb of ram and it can get chuggy when files hit 100+mb
-
I called Dell, got to a senior tech who confirmed the above ^
Also on the M11x page: Combining the power of the optional Intel® Core i7 640UM and 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 335M GPU with optional NVIDIA® Optimus technology, the M11x delivers an intense gaming experience. -
yes it is/
-
So is getting the i7 upgrade really worth it? or should i just stick with the i5
-
You didn't call? Cause the site (EPP) where the i5 and i7 are don't work.
-
I was about to bite on this but I'm not sure how much the i5 or i7 is going to make overall on the computer.
I guess I am going to wait for benchmarks for each chip in terms of performance and battery life vs the R1 intel core 2.
If anyone has a link to the comparison and hands on of it can you pm it to me, I don't have time to go through all the pages of the thread.
Also, if someone has a quick answer for me. In terms of every day use (internet, office, a little gaming (WOW, FFXIV TBR still...) how much difference is there?)
I realize the i5 and the i7 overclock much higher than the core 2 and obviously they will be able to push the gpu slightly higher, but how much higher are they benched. If you answer in the thread thats fine, but if you have a link i will just read it.
I'm not sure whether it is for the 150 dollar bump from core 2 to i5, and 150 more from the i5 to the i7.
Thanks.
P.S. What exactly is "soft-touch". Does that just mean it is a satin type finish as opposed to the glossy finish or what? -
wow. for some reason i couldnt get in.. and it says
"We're unable to process your request.

lol -
i called epp and anounced honestly i did not meet criteria for epp. they sold me something anyway.
-
Hehe. I suspect with 100meg files even the i5s going to be chuggy at points to! And at that screen res too must be painful...
Does the cs4/5 cud acceleration help or is that just for cosmetic stuff like live rotations.
J -
So, just to be very clear on this, the Alienware m11x with core i7 also has optimus, right?
-
Like a rubbery outter coating.
Yes
Source: M||x Details -
Been following this thread (and the prior refresh thread) and thought I'd finally join the forum. I've been talking to a Dell rep today and they won't budge any more than the 6% Student Discount (EPP), bringing the system I want to £953 which is just too much, so it looks like i'll be picking up an R1 someone's selling off. Technology pricing is the single reason I wish I lived in the US...
I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to show with the link to those benchmarks as they don't see them touch on any of the LV/ULV models, just list them in the initial table (which doesn't tell us anything).
I can think of a few games off the top of my head that can be CPU constrained even with processors quite a lot better than the SU7300, such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Crysis and Battlefield Bad Company 2.
The 30fps thing is a common misconception; the human eye can see a large distinction between 30fps and 60fps (I certainly can) and fighter pilots have shown they can identify planes from images that were shown to them for 1/220th of a second. -
Rubbery outer coating... what is this sorcery... ?
They don't have to cheap out on everything, apple-style metal chasis would be pretty nice.
-
I'm guessing the rubber type coating is like what's on the Asus G73, and the palmrest of the G51's? If so I'm excited, I love that stuff.
Now just to see if the I7 is noticeably faster. So far, everything I regularly lay runs awesome on the M11x except GTA4, and honestly that struggles even on my G73. Always like to see new faster toys come out though. -
Hmm, this is contradicting the "Tech Specs" page which says under the Video Card Options:
"Dynamically switchable with NVIDIA Optimus Technology (M11x Core i5 only)"
Again, don't trust Dell reps.
-
To be honest i think that's a mistake on their part - as someone else said they were probably just trying to differenciate between the old and new model.
-
read above. i think they're saying that the dell website assumes the core i7 and i5 to be both included within the core i5 statement.
-
darn... beat me to it
-
I see. Thanks for clarifying this for me
-
PCMark Vantage of the intel core i5 520UM in an Asus UL80Jt. The core2duo SU7300 is also on the list, but I doubt it's been OC'ed. Can't seem to find any benchmarks of the core i7 UM series.
-
Does anyone have a good idea of how the 335m will compare to the Mobility Radeon 5650 in the Acer TimelineX 3820tg? The 3820tg kicked the pants off the original m11x in games, but now with the Core iX CPUs, I have a feeling the picture will be much closer.
-
The Mobility HD 5650 is still a better mobile GPU but the gap will be smaller now with the new processors.
-
I dunno about this i7/i5 optimus. Multiple sites state, it's with the i3/i5 has that technolgy+the intel gfx. But the i7 doesn't have such a option.
-
Can someone tell me when dell epp will get the i5/i7 refresh to work? Or can someone tell me how to get it to work? I really want to buy one soon but i want to get it from there, any news would be a great help to me!
-
So does Alienware support overclocking on the new i3/i5/i7 CPUs? I didn't see any confirmation of this.
-
All the core i series dual cores are based off the same arrandale architecture, including the core i7 6xx series. It is only the quad cores which are clarksfield architecture without the intel graphics. There's various confirmations of the core i7 640um having optimus throughout this thread.
-
keep in mind the m11x is going to get the ULV core i processors
the new timelineX has the full powered mobile core i processors -
I got a message from a certain friendly AW/DELL employee that says there will be multiple options...
-
So I'm expecting my M11x on Friday.
I have SU7300, Bluetooth, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 3 years advanced warranty and I paid $1303 CAD. Right now if I ordered the same specs and warranty with the i5 it would be $1563 and with the i7 it would be $1713. These prices are before the 13% CAD sales tax. I also got 10% off before than I can get now.
I paid $1325.15, if I ordered the i5 now I'd pay $1766.19 and for the i7 it would be $1935.69. Basically it means if I ordered the i5 I'd pay $441.04 more and $610.54 more for i7. I can't really see them being worth that much extra at this point. Even if I could still get my 10% discount I'd pay $264.42 extra for i5 and $416.97 extra for the i7. If my 10% comes back and I can get it on sale again (Save $200) Then I might consider getting the i7 but right now I think I'll stick with the SU7300. I'd really like the new soft touch finish though, don't care too much about Optimus.
What do you think? -
This quote from the dell website says that it can be overclocked on top of turboboost. But in all honesty, I really don't know - details from dell are so shotty right now.
"Take mobile gaming to the next level with the optional overclockable Intel® CoreTM i series of mobile processors. Intel Turbo Boost Technology enables the optional Intel® CoreTM i7 640UM to reach 2.66GHz maximum frequency and helps you power through games, multimedia applications and your daily routine all at the same time." -
I kinda have the same feeling. I got the Studio 1557 with i7 720QM. At the time, it was the first i7 quad core under $1k. The CPU is rock solid. But the build and keyboard is just not good at all. I also got a Lenovo T60 w/ Core Duo 1.8Ghz w/ 1050 high-res screen that I brought from ebay for $400. Both T60 and T4215 I have are far better built & keyboard than Dell Studio system. I never have Alienware build so I'm not sure how it's. Anyone can shed some light on the issue of keyboard & build quality on the M11x compared to any of those that I got? I don't do a lots of hardcore gaming. In fact I generally play MapleStory (DX8 2D MMORPG) but w/ Taksi on. Taksi is pretty much an opensource frap alternative. So capturing in xvid does require some CPU performance. And I do play FPS from time to time, and the Studio 1557 build is so bad that even just those gaming, it couldn't even do well.
-
Anyone know if Optimus is an additional option or included?
-
Standard .
-
Thanks. So if I am reading this correctly, our educated guess is that i7 does have optimus. I am about to order one now.
-
Its included.
-
Dell Canada has M11x with i5 cpu now. The default is about 150 CAD more to start.
-
Do we have benchmarks of the new processors; specifically how much better is the i7 then the i5
-
Hey guys. Are ANY coupons working with the m11x-R2 right now? I mean, I tried the free shipping over 699 one, the $100 off one...
all don't work. what gives? -
i second krazmych. anyone got coupons? im still within my 30 days so i wanna return mine for one with a corei7 :]
-
