What mouse do you guys use with your Alienware M11x's?
I have always used either a Logitech GX518 or a Logitech G5 with all of my computers. But I am finding that the USB cable gets in the way sometimes, and isn't that convenient. So I am thinking of getting another mouse for my laptop.
Out of curiosity, what mice do you guys prefer use with your laptops?
-
I'm using a Razer Orochi (like many, from what I've read on these boards) which is a great mouse--works well just for browsing if you have bluetooth, and has a USB cable for when you want to game. My only issue is the mouse is pretty small--it feels fine in my hands, but after using it for a while the size does become an issue.
-
Glad you made this thread, I was about to make it.
@GiSS, you're right that mouse does seem a little bit small. But then again... is it really that much of a problem? -
I use a Logitech VX Nano. The mouse is small but I also use one on my desktop and its fine. I like the fact that it uses a really small receiver, meaning you can leave it plugged in all the time. It also comes with a soft case.
[EDIT] I also use a Bluetooth keyboard with mine, the Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 is only slightly larger than the M11x and is really thin, meaning it goes into a bag nicely. It also comes with a separate BT number pad (that has a bag, which for some reason the keyboard doesn't).[/EDIT] -
got myself the orochi, fits great for me
-
I recommend Orochi also
-
Ok, thanks guys. I'll look into getting one.
BTW, does using a mouse on bluetooth eat away at the laptop batteries? How about the mouse batteries? How long does the mouse last? -
And yes, Bluetooth will cost you some laptop battery to supply the bluetooth module with power, but It's barely noticeable. -
Just placed my order for the Orochi off amazon.
-
If you want a wireless mouse for gaming, I can't recommend the Orochi. It will go to sleep after 2 secs on inactivity which can be annoying for gaming as theres a delay for it to wake back up. When your wired the problem is eliminated, but then your using up a usb port and you have a cable again.
Otherwise the mouse is fine, though a bit heavy since it uses AA's instead of AAA's like the VX Nano.
I like the Logitech VX Nano & Anywhere MX but the nano receiver does stick out a lot on the M11x usb ports. -
I've got an older VX nano...before they started making them with the tiny usb receivers, mine is like 1.5'' and im always worred about that thing getting snapped off.
This kind.
-
How about this logitech bluetooth keyboard? Anyone own it?

I love my VX Nanos, I have several and they're awesome. My only complaint is that I wish there was a BT version as I hate giving up my USB port and I especially hate having something hanging off the machine.
I was ready to buy a Razer Orochi, but the 2 second thing I've seen mentioned here is a deal killer for me, I'm going to attempt living with my VX Nano on the m11x and see if I can ignore the ugly wart from the Rx device.
I'm quite handy with a soldering iron, I wonder if a bit of effort couldn't put that micro-rx into the internal header for the WWAN option (it's almost certainly USB, but I'd need to dig up some part #'s to be sure). Many people have done similar things with netbooks. -
While it isn't a gaming mouse, the Microsoft Arc is a great travel mouse. It is quite small when folded up, and fits my hands nicely when unfolded. Battery life is excellent, and the dongle is very small. The only issue I have is the side button is too far forward.
-
Orochi looks nice and small to game "Anywhere", but I do preffer the Razer Naga (The one im actually using) because I do preffer a big mouse that can help me with some RPGs games (Because my favorite games are RPGs and shooter games).
Btw, This 5-6 weeks that I have used this mouse, I'm having only 1 minnor issue with it, sometimes when I turn-on my m11x the mouse dont turn on, so i have to re-connect it to use it. Anyways I love it and I really recommend it. -
I currently use a logitech g3 (bought it boxing day for 16 bucks a year or 2 ago) works great but i am intrigued by the orochi. Is the gaming in bluetooth mode really that bad?
-
I like my MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
It may be a bit dated, but it's still my favorite mouse.
-
I love the Razer Orochi. The sleep after 2 seconds thing doesn't bother me much while gaming since I'm always fidgeting. But if I was playing as a sniper, I might plug it in just in case. Plugging it in also enables the configuration dashboard, so fine-tuning it involves a cord sometimes...
Since I have ergonomic issues, I switch between the Orochi (claw style) and the G5 (palm style) to keep my tendons from fatiguing. I greatly prefer the cordless when I'm on my lapdesk (except for when I tilt the desk and my mouse lands on the floor, then I wish it was plugged in.) -
for me it was a mouse with one of those small usb receivers so i would not need to unplug and replug it in every time i use it. i have a "gear head" mouse
-
My mouse that i use and love is the razor Deathadder but it is only wired but i still love it
-
I ended up getting a Logitech Anywhere MX. I got it because:
1) The "darkfield" feature lets it be used on any surface - even glass surfaces.
2) It is small, and portable. Much better suited for a mobile mouse, compared to its bigger brother (Logitech Performance Mouse MX).
3) The battery life is great - much better than the Razer Mamba, which lasts only a few dozen hours on a charge.
4) Doesn't have the "sleep lag" that the Razer Orochi has.
It's not as comfortable or physically large as I would prefer, but it seems to be ok for a mobile notebook mouse. I will give it another 1 or 2 weeks, and then decide whether I want to keep it or switch out for another Logitech or Razer mouse. -
on the run: Logitech Vx nano
stationary/gaming: Logitech G5
Both mice are very good, they fit my hands very well and everything has been great so far. -
I had another go at gaming with the Orochi today. I played some TF2 and tried to keep the mouse active, but it seems that bluetooth can also suffer some nasty lag itself. I guess I would stick with regular 2.4Ghz wireless mice.
It seems Razer has had complaints about the sleeping and wake up lag since at least Dec 2009 so I doubt a fix is going to happen if its already been 7 months. Mine will probably be going back. -
I don't have a wireless mouse at the moment. So I can't help you there. I'm currently using the TactX Alienware mouse, and it's working for me alright. If I didn't get the discount when I got the computer - as much as the mouse cost - I never would have gotten that mouse. However, I'm very satisfied with it, and with one off day, it's been wonderful.
-
^Agreed. I have a TactX mouse also and it has been absolutely spot on; best mouse i've ever used. Really don't see the point of a wireless mouse, especially with a laptop.
Another plus for the TactX mouse is matching it with your Alien FX, just a small feature but it's nice to have and looks great! -
Bleh, I wasn't a fan of the Logitech Anywhere MX. I returned it for the larger Logitech Performance MX. The 2.4Ghz wireless is flawless for me - and gets around the rumored problems of input lag and sleep lag from Bluetooth mice.
Do other people notice the input/sleep lag? Is it as big of a pain as I think it is in my head?
But for my M11x, it made sense. I was playing a game on an airplane (coach class) the other day using my Logitech GX518, and it was kind of a pain having the USB connector hang out on the right side of the laptop where my hand would keep bumping into it. If I hooked up the mouse to the left-side USB port, then I have wires running all over the place. There are definitely trade-offs with wireless, but I think that they are worth it if I don't have connectors or cables hanging off of my USB ports.
I gotta say though - matching the AlienFX lighting is pretty sweet. -
-
I'm using a similar but I think older version of this:
Logitech Wireless Mouse M505
It's great. I bought this over a year ago and still haven't changed out batteries. The nano receiver barely sticks out at all. I wish there were some extra buttons to program for games but it's definitely not a deal breaker. I'd take it over a laggy/sleep mode bluetooth mouse or wired mouse any day. -
Just picked up the razer orochi to replace the g3 as per the suggestion on this forum. First thing I did was update the firmware to v 1.06. It seems that there is no lag when using bluetooth.
The software was a bit of a pain trying to configure the light to turn on (had to try about 5 times). But now that it is set up this mouse works great. Didn't really like the 5 button bluetooth mouse from dell.
Thanks for the assistance. Try the firmware upgrade and let me know if it makes any difference for you guys as well. -
You should get this one if you one a wireless mouse.
Marathon Mouse M705
I have it and it's not too big and not too small. I'll be using it for 3 years before I have to change the battery! -
In wireless mode does it still turn off after 2 secs of inactivity? Have you tried gaming with the mouse in wireless mode in a game like TF2? I don't think Razer ever intended for this mouse to be used in wireless mode for gaming.
I am using the latest firmware and the mouse still has these issues. -
MaxGeek
I am using it wireless mode. The mouse still turns off after 2 seconds of inactivity. The games I have played have constantly had action in them so the mouse doesn't have a chance to go to sleep. It is sufficiently responsive for my gaming needs (I am not a pro gamer by any means).
After 2 seconds of inactivity the mouse still has a quick jutter but is working great after the first skip. I can see how this could be an issue if one camps in FPS, but compared to other bluetooth mice this one responds significantly faster. -
I got a Sidewinder X5 (Not for a m11x, but for my M15x). It's a little on the big side, but I definitely is worth the price. (5 Buttons, Macro, 2000 DPI) I payed only 25 bucks over amazon. If your on a budget I highly recommend it.
If you got some money to burn, go with the Razer Death Adder or Imperator. Both are great mice. -
BestBuy has the Razer Orochi on sale this week for $72, only $2 more than NewEgg. A Good opportunity to try it out for yourself and return it if the lag is too bad.
I'm going to take advantage of it later today, maybe I'll like it if not I'm covered. -
Ok, so I bought one at BB today and updated the firmware before I did anything else.
The 2 second sleep issue is still there, but as previously noted it's only there for bluetooth. It is annoying, it could cause some issues in games if you're not constantly moving the mouse. The only other thing I'll say about this is if you're game is not constantly moving the mouse it's unlikely that this would be an issue in that game.
The MicroUSB cable it comes with is pretty nice cloth cable, and it's end is molded to fit into the Orochi making it look like a wired mouse. Despite the extra molding it does fit into standard microusb ports so it essentially replaces the cable i carry in my notebook bag anyway. I wish Razer would have made the mouse end without the molding however, as it makes it much thicker than it should be inside the travel bag.
I'm not yet 100% sure if I'm going to keep it, but I am leaning towards that. I do like it better than my Logitech VX Nano, and I especially like the easy on/off switch and the lack of a separate receiver. As far as performance, they seem about equal to me. -
razer mamba for $69

Logitech MX518, I stick with what works.

logitech marathon mouse M705
Marathon Mouse M705
It's very comfortable, has the micro USB receiver that I leave plugged into my M11x and can be turned off to save battery. It's a bit smaller than my MX 1100 that I use for my desktop but has nearly the same buttons and hyper-scrolling.
I thought about the Anywhere mouse, which works on glass, but it's not very confortable to hold, IMHO. -
If you like the ability to work on glass, then check out the Logitech Performance MX (also called the M950 in Australia). It's a fantastic mouse, if you do not need the super-high DPI and polling rates of gaming mice. -
Razer Orochi here. I love it. Using AA batteries instead of AAA is a GOOD thing which become readily apparant when you start battery shopping, and not just single-use... even NiMH (compare the maH). It matches the M11x stylistically, especially if you use blue AlienFX lighting.

Another nod for the Marathon Mouse M705. I picked one up the other day, and it's perfect. I've gotten addicted to the hyperscroll on my G500, so I had to have a mouse that had that. It's a bit smaller than the G500, which is fine for portability, but it's not too small for my medium sized glove wearing hands. the three year battery life is just icing on the cake. Oh, and I couldn't find mention of it in the docmentation, but there's a third thumb button for application switching at the bottom of the thumbpad.
Only two complaints. I've never used a wireless mouse before, and sure enough, I can feel the lag. It's just slight, but if I go from my G500 to the M705, the cursor is just a touch behind where my eyes expect it to be. My other complaint is the lower DPS. when I normally game at 4700-5700 DPS, 1000 DPS is just slooooow.
Don't forget to download the Setpoint drivers. They made the mouse feel 10x better just by installing them. Not to mention there's some nifty options. -
If that really bothers you, and you are dead-set on a wireless mouse, then I would recommend the Logitech G700. It is a full-sized mouse for your hand, high-DPI (up to 5700dpi, I believe), and a high USB polling rate (configurable up to 1000Hz, or 1ms response time). The Logitech G700 is by far, the best wireless gaming mouse out right now when it comes to performance. -
Still waiting for the Logitech G700 to hit Best Buy's shelves so I can use my $75 gift certificate to get it. Can't wait!

Not many posts about the tactX....thoughts on this guys? I just ordered one today and am now having second thoughts after reading this thread and not seeing much about this mouse.
