    Thanks :)

DavyGT and nando4 helped me figure out how to OC the CPU, DavyGT has a whole thread on how.

I was able to hard mod mine to 2.0ghz ;) added about 1k and my GPU OC added another 1k.

Just got my R3 off of the tech guys at work yesterday - they always do a clean reinstall and set up software and network access. Had to wait a full day for it.

Instantly started working off of battery only to test battery life. Using (mostly) the balanced power profile, installing and setting up extra stuff, browsing the web, downloading, playing music and video, ran a 3dmark06 test, on mid brightness most of the time, wireless on, alien fx lights on ... I got 4:45 battery life until hibernate (around 5% battery left I think).

    3dmark06 results

on battery (assume Intel IGP) 3035
    Result

Using 65W power supply from old Inspiron 4350
    Result

Using proper 90W power supply 8392
    Result

Haven't really optimised anything yet (other than the clean reinstall done for me)

Looking for free gaming benchmarks to download and test ...

    edit:
Tried Crysis benchmark, didn't realise it requires the game, thought it was standalone ... any standalone game benchmarks I can try

How relatively well is this score in comparison to my laptop specs :8536

    M11x R2
    Core i7 640um SetpLL @180mhz w/ throttlestop multiplier maxed at 14x
335m Vbios mod @.95v OC to 605/1450/925 w/ EVGA precision
    8gb of Ram
    500gb Momentus xt

I've been doing everything i can think of to boost my m11x's performance, and i feel like, after all the modifications done, thats still a crappy 3dmark score.

Any opinions on what i can do?

That is above what most others have gotten. My I5 is in the 8300 for scores. Really just matters how well it performs during game time.

for a laptop of its size its not a "crappy" score by any means. you also would be hard pressed to find many other laptops in a 12" & 13" frame hitting scores like that.

if you want a laptop with a "real score", buy a bigger laptop (M14x) or wait a few years for tech to move along.

i dont think its a crappy score at all, i just expected a better score after all the modifications and over clocking i did to it. I was just wondering if a spec like that was normal to recieve a score like that

My signature shows my max stable 3DMark06 score... I say stable because I don't consider any settings that don't stand up to real use a good benchmark. Similar to yours, Sparky. If I clock my CPU / GPU more, games lock up. I see you have an i7. Since our scores are similar, I wager the i7 still isn't pushing data fast enough (??).

You're about 500-1000 points short of what is expected. What other modifications have you done? RAM SPD mod? Can we see the result page or individual scores to see where the deficiency lies? Are there any rogue processes consuming resources? Tassadar898 got 91xx from an i5 with similar GPU clocks so I expect you to be a few hundred points higher because of the CPU advantage.

    I'll leave this here.

Thanks for the response Davy, and know i havent done SPD mod, im not quite sure how to do that, and ill look into tweaking some stuff.

BTW, off topic, i was stupid and i accidently uninstalled the 335m gpu from the device manager, and now i cant install drivers, games play like crap, and my computer doesnt recognize the gpu. it doesnt even show up with a yello exclamation

This is now driving me crazy - I just got my refurb i5 r2 and want to run some of these benchmarks and contribute... but running 3dmark06 forces the Intel HD GPU to be used. Even after whitelisting the proper exe's in the Nvidia Control panel, 3dmark06 keeps showing up as GPU: Intel HD..

    Am I doing something wrong?

Running A03 stock bios, and rolled back to the supported Nvidia video driver from the dell.com site.

    thanks!

3dmark always reports as using the Intel graphics, even when it is not. Unless your score is something really low, like 6000 or below, it is using your 335m.

That should be with your 335m. Are you using stock cpu and gpu settings? I think I overestimated a 3dmark score with the Intel. I believe it would be around 4000 or lower, maybe not even 4000. I can run a stock 3dmark06 run and post what I get. I have the i5 with 4GB of ram.

I guess it would help if I had it installed. I'm downloading it and I will let you know what I get in a while. Overclocking will help greatly though. I can get over 8600 with my cpu at 185 and gpu around 560/13xx/880.

Maybe your score is a little low. I got 6797 at stock settings.

    Result

Notice that shows the Intel HD Graphics as the gpu. I think it does with all Optimus enabled systems. I am using the 260.99 Nvidia drivers.

Ok cool. Thanks for all the replies everyone. I just wanted to make sure I have a solid benchmark before I start doing some overclocking/afterburning/throttlestopping/arctic silvering :D

To be clear, mine is completely stock, no OC in bios or anything.

One quick question - in the Alienware control panel, do I need to make any changes to the default "high" profile, or should that not matter?

Forgot to mention - it looks like your driver version is newer, and after my results they were using a 3dmark non-supported driver version. I'll update my nvidia driver for the 335m and rerun the test. That may be useful for some people to know - whether or not the 3dmark score improves on stock configuration with the latest 335m driver.

edit: it looks like the latest drivers are "270.61".. is there any reason you stuck with the 260.99?

I have better stability when I overclock with these drivers. The 270.xx drivers give me a blue screen at lower overclocks compared to 260.99.

Just upgraded to the new Nvida driver and finally broke the 10K mark. Check out the results:

    Result

    Core Clock: 837
    Shader: 1674
    Memory: 1080

    M11x R3, i7 2617M, 8GB DDR3, 160 GB SSD

By the way, I can also verify that you don't need the modified inf file for this driver.

Thanks, I saw a few artifacts in the firefly and deep freeze benchmarks. I have to drop the core clock to around 825 to be artifact free. This of course drops me below the 10K mark. When I have time, I'll throw some 3D mark 11 benchmarks up.

So far on my r3 I just received last week:

    3dmark 06
    540M @ 800/1080 = 9623 marks Result

    Vantage (physX = cpu)
    540M @ 672/900 = 4328 marks Result
    540M @ 800/1080 = 5088 marks Result

    3dmark 11
    540M @ 672/900 = P1054 marks Result
    540M @ 800/1080 = P1241 marks Result

I'm going to run 11 and 06 with the overclocked settings and report back. I'm unable to get 805+ core to run without crashing the display drivers.

Your drivers probably crashed. Sometimes when you overclock too high it will make the drivers crash and the video card will run at reduced speeds. Try lower clock speeds and see what happens.

I've tried to get my R3 to crack 10k on 3dmark06 and just can't do it. In fact, I got around 97xx with just a GPU overclock and figured if I added the minor CPU OC in the BIOS I'd make it ...

I obviously don't know enough about how it all works, because as soon as I upped the cpu, my scores went down. Majorly down. Disappointly down into the 7k and 8k range sometimes, low 9k at other times.

So annoyed. Best GPU clocks were around 800/1600/1080 - sometime drivers would crash, other times ok.

Hey Iceman 9700 isnt anything to cry about thats awsome. I think only a few of us have broken 10K. I was able to push my clocks to about 835/16??/1075 but like you it crashes often at that then other times not so much. I benched with you clocks and im right on par with your scores i got 9800 something.

Yeah, I just wanted it so badly, just for enjoyment's sake. First Alienware and I wanted to do something cool with it.
I can't seem to get the core much over 800, while plenty of others do that easily. 804 worked once. Might play around a bit more once I finish grading papers this weekend, but prob won't have time.
Thanks for the positive feedback :D Oh, quick Q? - do you OC cpu and GPU, or just gpu?
