Now I'm impressed, Dell said they would replace the unit within 5 - 7 days for a scratch on the on/off button.
Not bad service really, although I appreciate I am within my first 7 days of owning it so could have sent it back anyway.

Only problem is I will have to re-load all of the games again :)

I would've thought if you liked to rest your palm on the mouse you'd go for a G5 or G500 (both of which I have and love).

    * Of course if you set the trackpad sensitivity all the way up it's going to go crazy.... o_O

    * MSN on the right - go to start > programs > find the MSN file and right click - change the mode to run for Windows Vista.

    * Remove programs....erm, Control Panel > Programs/Uninstall?

    * Someone here posted a link to the Alienware wallpapers - use the search button or just search for it on Dell's site

    * Changing Alienware colors - open up the Alienware Control Centre software

    * Trackpad scrolling up and down - in your taskbar open the Synaptec program and its under the options (you just need to check the box)

a lot of your questions were answered a page or two previously or in the manual...you took the time to write all that out I'm sure your work can spare a few more minutes reading :p

    Hi silver,

Just wondering if you did actually request for a full replacement of the unit?
i'm also having a build issue at the bottom right of the palm rest being sharp edges while the other side is smooth.

Also got a slight faint crack on the inside of the speaker light on the left.

i'm not sure if Dell would be bother with the replacement or repair (just don't want them to make it worse as it is)

    Cheers

    Ahem.. ok - I'll bite..

probably... have you tried setting it to something other than "max speed"?

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=uscrybe+drivers

depends on what you want/need from the driver/software and it's capabilities.

Start -> Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program, or...

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=windows+7+uninstall+program

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+create+multiple+partitions

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+upgrade+to+win+7+professional

no clue... ya got me here... :D

eh - not sure on this one either.. ;) - I'd look it up but I've got work to do myself..

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=download+alienware+wallpapers

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=xbox+controller+with+pc

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=hdtv+usb+tuner

double-click the nice, shiny blue Alienware Command Center shortcut on your desktop.. then click "AlienFX" at the bottom - enjoy...

usually context sensitive help, depending on the application you're currently using - additionally it's the FN key to use to push the video to an external monitor...

    again:

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=what+does+the+f1+key+do?

Assuming you have the Synaptics Drivers properly loaded...

Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Mouse -> Device Settings -> Settings -> Scrolling

(hoping you'll figure it out from here...)

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=razer+orochi+size+dimensions

(This one's able to change it's dimensions... however:

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Logitech+G9x+size+dimensions

    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Sentinel+Advance+-+Coolermaster+Mouse+size+dimensions

really? phew - thought you were going to ask how can we obtain world peace or something..

Anyone know of the M11x GPU will be Nvidia 3D capable with new drivers and 3D display?
I saw the thread about the M15x being compatible and was curious.

The weird noise you're experiencing - potentially the fan? As when it turns on - it is a bit louder than typical notebook/netbook fans..

I'm not saying that you can't get help here - you certainly can - just a lot of your questions are very typical and are easily found if you'd search based on the exact same information/words that you just typed in your original post.

To wit, the point of my post.

With regards to the sound you're referring to and are concerned about - what is the sound? what does it sound like? where is it coming from with regards to the location of the laptop? front? back? left? right? does it come on/off randomly? or is it consistent? is it loud? or barely noticeable? Computers make a *lot* of different sounds... :)

But I'm all for helping out where possible - assuming there's a real problem to troubleshoot. (i.e. the OP's noise issue)..

For anyone wondering the Alienware Neoprene Slip Case is still in production. I ordered mine within minutes of a fellow poster linking the case off of Dell's site. Got an email yesterday saying my estimated time of arrival is pushed back to the last day of March. Just an fyi...

Alright been debating this with a bunch of guys -

Since the M11x uses an internal battery (well not as easily removable as standard laptops), how would you preserve its battery life? From what we gathered the best bet is to never let it fall below 10-20% and charge up to 80-90% only for day to day use. Then of course disable charging if plugged in for long hours.

    Yay/nay?

I just called my account manager (The guy who sold it to me) and explained the situation, and he said they would give me a new one.

Depends how long you have had it as well, I would give them a call and explain the situation, and ask for a replacement (if they dont offer), if they say they will come out and fix it then go with that.

Not sure what the law says, I know there is a cooling off period, I have a feeling it is 7 days, but may be slightly longer. If you are still within this cooling off period, just tell them to send you another one, or you want a refund.

    Good luck :)

PS... If they come out and make anything worse then kick up hell and demand a replacement

I am getting a full order replacement sent to me. They said it should only be 5-7 business days for it to arrive again. Exact config as my first order. Let's hope they fix some build issues. I had some screen gap issues and fan issues I told them about. I asked for a replacement since I was still in the 21 days and they did it no problems. This was after speaking with tech support for a couple days and troubleshooting etc. Anyway, noticed this on the order that was different from my original 2/3/10 order:

    1 313-9589 Intel Core2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz (3MB Cache, 800MHz FSB) Overclockable to 1.73GHz

says overclockable now.. anyway... let's hope the new one plays out better. What's awesome is they have a return label so I can use my current one until I get the new one back.

Sad to hear about so many issues, mine seems great, some very tiny screen gap issues but only at the top of the screen, none of the plastic popping out stuff. Not thinking it is worth it to me to mess with replacement, considering everything else is good, probably a higher chance of getting a bad hinge or dead pixels or some other problem other than a sub mm gap at the top if i get it replaced.

Anyway, my battery is just getting better, 12 hours of life in class today, and it seemed to be legit, after an hour class of taking notes it was down to 11 hours. Screenshot included for awesome.

yoda that's awesome! I wouldn't have bothered with the gap but on top of the fan running 24/7 and thus draining my battery life, I mentioned it and it's the not reason I'm getting a replacement though. Getting 3-4 hours on IGP power saver due to fan is why I'm getting a replacement..

Hey guys I was wondering about the SSD drives some of you were discussing I think maybe in a previous version of this thread... that we may be able to fit like a 64GB SSD drive in another slot in the M11X just for the operating system itself while keeping our original HDD in its bay as well for our programs etc. Is this possible? Anyone know what I am talking about?

taco - it's not been shown to work yet. I don't think anyone's tested it, but I researched it some on other Dell machines with teh same wwan slot open and those SSD's just don't work. I"m guessing maybe they need a controller on the mini pci-e itself too, which samsung should be releasing on due out anytime now.. but in the meantime I don't think they will work as others have tried other things in the pci-e slot and it is not recognized.

@aznguyen316 - exactly what I was thinking to use that WWAN slot inside for it... so you think when a controller is released (I imagine this to be some sort of adapter for it?) then we may be able to use an SSD for the OS?

@xSix - man, I tried this same thing you are talking about with Acronis TrueImage and also Norton Ghost and it jacked my system up so I ended up having one of my friends transfer some files from the DVD onto his USB drive and reinstalling Windows 7... just FYI make sure and back up the login screen and the backgrounds if you want them back also. Let me know if you get the clone to work because I am curious about trying it if I swap the HDD for the SSD in the future...

It arrived! What a great UP. Screen is more reflective than words can describe, but I'll get used to it. It is flippin incredible, especially for the price. Only drawback so far is they got the wrong boot logo, but I can live with that since I only see it for a few seconds. Glad to no longer be haunting that Order Status thread.

Ok so the apple extreme router is probably the best in its class. I set it up to offer 5gz on top of the standard 2.4.

Connected my m11x and bam 300 mps...damn none of the network screen gadgets work any more.

Rather than reply to one or two of you I'm just going to post this and assume that you're going to read it since I have a few definitive answers for some of you. Otherwise, I guess you're out of luck!

    1. taco, don't even get your hopes up a tiny little fraction of a percent of the way. There is absolutely no way to get an SSD inside the m11x along with a HDD. No way, no how. Save yourself the trouble of looking into it and just trust me, I know it can't be done. Yes, I know what you're talking about with the whole wwan port and all, and it just isn't possible. Not to mention any of the SSDs available in mini-pcie form factors are hilariously terrible compared to their standard 2.5" sata form factor brothers in the SSD world.

    2. To the person asking about installing win7 using a usb stick, it's quite simple. Download the HP USB disk format utility, and format the pen drive with that. That makes it bootable. Then, open up the iso or dvd of windows 7 using whatever utility you prefer, and (ctrl-c,ctrl-v) copy the files off the disk to your usb drive. Boot the usb drive. Install windows. Done.

    3. Anejo, I disagree. It's nice to get an apple router if you have a macbook as i'm sure there are compatibility niceties between them, but the apple router is by far not the best in class. You must not be aware of the linksys dual band router that I have personally been using for the past year or more that is perfect in more ways than you can imagine, especially with the dd-wrt support to allow the best router firmware available.

    4. To anyone who was still curious as to what they lose by getting the su4100, well suffice it to say it's been said again and again there is barely a performance difference between the two CPUs. I am currently successfully booting a virtual machine using vmware (the free version, vmware player can run downloaded virtual machines) of backtrack 4 final. It works fine, proving that vt-x is a hilariously unnecessary component for virtualization that just so happens to be necessary in virtualbox and windows xp mode. Virtualization is still possible, and likely better in vmware.

    5. To those who have discussed the kabuto mousepad in the past, I am rather alarmed that those of you never mentioned the downside to using it as a protector between the screen and the keyboard. The downside is THAT THE SCREEN DOESN'T CLOSE ALL THE WAY. I am unsure if this is a dealbreaker for me, but suffice it to say I worry about the long term usage of a mat like this stuck between the screen and keyboard that doesnt allow the hinge to be fully closed.

    6. To those of you looking for a nice case to comfortably hold your m11x, as I personally prefer to have both a slip case covering the laptop as well as a sling bag to carry it along with other accessories, then I highly suggest you buy an incase macbook pro 13" slip case. It may seem rather odd to get that type of case but it fits the m11x like a glove and has an extremely soft furry inside to help keep the m11x looking brand new. It will also fit into the eeepc 1000he fitted case that comes with one but it doesnt have the furry inside and is a tight fit.

    7. If you're curious as to certain other unsupported OSes other than linux or windows, suffice it to say that it will not work because of the brand new gpu although the built in wireless card is promising as it is a broadcom make.

Yes just the neoprene sleeve and not the binder case, although I'm sure that was probably not available yet either. It seems as though this should have been listed as a preorder and not actually up for order. Ah the joys of being an early adopter.

While I respect your opinion, I have to disagree. I have had Linksys, and dlink and others, and from an overall perspective of ease of set-up, quality and features the latest Apple Extreme (which is dual band) is the best router I have ever owned. This is not a apple or mac thing...its a quality engineering thing. In this case apple did it well, the others not.

yeah I mentioned the kabuto issue after finally using it. I stil use it though, I just let the kabuto mat hang slightly lower so it's not all the way up toward the screen and it mostly closes haha. Long term use we may see some issues but whatever.

So they're sending a tech over to replace my lcd. Everything seems to be good, just that stupid speck under the screen. Hopefully they don't give me a black lcd lid. I was watching someone's video on YouTube that they sent him a silver lid while his m11x was black.

Looked at the sleeve last night and it's sold out.
Looking at these sleeves with the zippers, wouldn't they scratch the lappy? As many times as you would pull it out and put it back in, it's bound to scratch it.

I was kind of wondering about the Kabuto beiing used as a screen protector. That protector that comes with the m11x already seems to not let the lid close all the way down.

But now, to save battery, I want to go back to Intel graphics and I hit Fn F6 but the same menu doesnt pop up this time. Instead its an option to "save power" or something. How do I get my intel graphics back?

craigery - there is no "menu" on the stock drivers. save power is your integrated gpu, performance is your discrete. YOu can tell by either right clicking desktop and see if nvidia panel is on your menu bar, or look at the taskbar and see if that green icon has one (IGP) or two (335m) arrow things lit up. Or if there is a blue square lookin icon that's IGP.

So I assume when im entering Power Saving mode that I am in fact switching to the stock grahpics?

Strange that I still see the Nvidia icon even when on lowest power setting.

where do you see the nvidia icon? If you mean the green looking thing than that's just the hybrid graphics driver thing. There's only two power settings for graphics, so "lowest" I assume is save power and then there's performance.

Oh ok it is the "hybrid" icon. So where is the Nvidia icon that you speak of? Sorry I am new at all this switchable features.

well when you're in actual discrete performance mode, you can tell on that "hybrid" icon if there are two green arrows or just one. You can double check by right clicking the desktop and see if it shows nvidia control panel. That means it's in discrete graphics. If not then you're on integrated.

So I remember some people talking about having finicky bluetooth issues. I'm tryin to get my orochi to connect and it worked fine with the factory hard drive installed, but I installed the dell driver with my ssd and such afterwards. Now it can detect the orochi, but will not connect to it?

I am having bluetooth issues. I connected to my bluetooth headphones and it worked fine for 5 mins and then bluetooth not only stopped working it disappeared from the device manager. I tried downloading and installing the drivers from Dell website but it repeated the whole cycle and now I dont see BT on my Laptop.

One thing that made me laugh. Some of the initial unboxing pictures made the box look huge. When I got it, I was scared the box was so small.
