    Hi guys!

Just joined the forum, during my searches for reviews and vids on the m11x.

Just bought one, even though at first I thought it a bit pricey, but it sure looks like the bees knees. Can't wait to receive it on the 8th!

Not much of a computer expert so can hopefully learn some here.

Oh the specs I went for were:
    Intel® Core™ i7 640UM
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
    4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
500GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive

    How's that?

good specs and welcome aboard and enjoy the laptop. Read up on how to overclock the CPU and GPU and do some benchmarking to make sure everything looks good and throw a couple games and just get comfortable with the system.

I purchased this 15.6" screen protector/ anti glare and helped reduce the glare from the stock screen and take care of the issue where the keyboard was rubbing off on the screen and touching it. Now it is protected and don't have to worry about scratching the lcd while reducing the glare issue. You will need to trim it to size but it is 1/4 of the price of the Dell part.

mine runs OK at medium settings - only problem is I'm stuck trying to fly out of the canon - also your right OC CPU or expect to have lockups - tried it without Ocing the CPU to see what impact it would have - when weightless it seem jerky probably due to the physics calculations and the framerate did not seem anywhere as smooth as it was earlier.

But heck - it's an 11 inch laptop playing one of the most demanding games out there so really I'm impressed.

Mine locks up if the CPU is not overclocked in Crysis - when the CPU is Oc'ed Crysis seems to run fine when not she locks up for 5 odd seconds after some jerky frame rates.

Mine runs fine OC'ed it's just the multipler locks the CPU at 1.73 and when I need battery life I tend to turn off the CPU OC haven't run conclusive tests but logic dictates when OC'ed it will affect battery life to some extent.

    Hey guys.

Like I said in my previous post, I am not the most clued up when it comes to
computers, and now that I have ordered my m11x I would like to know/understand a bit more.
Been trying to find a link in here explaining the terms relevant to m11x in more simple terms, but to no avail.

For instance, overclocking. What does this exactly mean? Is it easy to do?

    lol. Sorry for the basicness!

    Overclocking

It's very easy. When your computer starts up, you hit F2 a couple times and it'll go into the BIOS. I forget exactly what tab it's under but it'll say Overclock. Hit + to change it to Yes and then F10 to save changes and exit.

I'd recommend looking around for other threads on tweaking and such as some of them are very helpful.

    Hi fellas.

Can someone please answer a question for me,
What does whitelisting a game mean? What effect does it have?

    Thanks.

doesn't this refer to the Optimus feature of the R2? i believe it is adding the game to list of things which require the the Nvidia graphics.

As the person said above me, "whitelisting" refers to the process of setting an application to use the discrete (335) graphics card. It's only on the R2 version which are the i5 and i7 chipset.

Looks like a common fault. Have a look at the hinge issue. Also if you are never taking the laptop out the house why not get a much more powerful desktop for a lot less money?

Have a question and it might be kind of noobish. I am a casual gamer/Student & Trying to purchase one of these this week since there is a "sale". lol. I do prefer performance and graphic usage slightly over battery usage so Ive heard the I5 processors perform better than the I7's. Can someone please verify this to me or if you believe otherwise, why? I just really want the most bang for the buck and im willing to buy an I7 if necessary. My first post and thanks for the help!

this wait for my r1 is killing me. I ordered on the sept 29, It will be here on Oct 13. I just ordered a 500gb Momentus XT at newegg today to install when the 11x gets here. They are on sale for $114 right now. I've got a whole library of steam games(Arkham Asylum, Bioshock 2, Borderlands, MW, MW2, Dirt, Dirt 2, FC 2, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, GTA IV,GTA IV Liberty City, Just Cause 2, LFD 1-2, and many last gen games). I will be benching them all at stock speed and overclocked. I know a lot of benchmarks are out, but I can't help not to bench them all myself. I will post my results once I get everything installed.

    Welcome to NBR! :)

That is a special situation (i5 dual core vs i7 quad core variant, very specifically, single threaded performance of the fastest i5 duals vs the slowest i7 quads). For the m11x, only the i5 and i7 dual core variants exist, and the i7 is faster in every way.

Thanks for the welcome. I mustve been looked in a closet and just came out to just have realized yesterday these laptops even exist. I meant that last line in the least gay way possible. I will be getting an I7 then since its faster in every way with 8gb ram. Hope it kicks . I played with it a bit today in best buy and im sure it will replace my MBP 13" just fine. Looked soo sweet!

Well, I checked the status, as I do everyday, and my order is now shipped, and scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I did the standard 7 day delivery. Luckily mine is only going from Chicago to Kansas City. I will be getting my m11x on the 6th instead of the original estimated date of the 13th. It says it was picked up by FedEx on the 4th. two day delivery! That's what I'm talking about! Too bad I ordered my 500gb Momentus XT yesterday :(. I assumed it would have plenty of time to get here first. I'll cross my fingers that it gets here tomorrow too.

Hee Hee. Dell does that, they estimate the worst case scenario, and update to a better one midway :p. Just a note, didn't dell price the 3-5 day the same price as the 7 day shipping? It has done that for me, a lot of times (shipping to Cali and FL).

Wow! I'm amazed that they had these at a Best Buy. They definitely don't have them at Best Buy in the Kansas City area. The only retailer that has them in my area in Micro Center in Overland park, KS and they are about $300 more expensive than Dell with EPP discount. What are the prices like at Best Buy?

This thing is awesome. Pictures and videos really don't do justice until you are actually typing on this thing and have it in hand. I love the aesthetics, and this SU7300 is like the little zippy CPU that could. I overclocked right away, and its just zooming right along. I've only played MW2 so far and everything was nice and smooth. This has completely eased me about getting an R1 vs R2. It was atleast $250-$300 more for the same config in i7. I'm glad I kept that extra cash in my pocket. I can use that toward another laptop for the future. The keyboard has such a great feel to it too.

Prices in best buy seemed a little steep at about $900 for the core 2 duo. Laptops are one of those things your not comfortable buying without having in your hands first. This laptop is soooo sweet. Im still undecided between the m11x I5 and the Acer timelinex 3820tg I5 if I could actually find one of these. Any help with that? lol, Happy ur enjoying ur lil alien Cliff. Also, What is an Epp discount? I like to save moneys :p

Was debating when it was $899 so when I saw it drop $100 I jumped on it, no regrets! Love my lil alien * smooch *

I have some small issues with my M11X:

    One USB-port doesn`t work anymore

    wireless goes on and off

battery can´t be found every now an then (and therefore its not charging)

    alienFX starts blinking

Overheating when watching movies (system turns off on its own after about 30 minutes)

screen starts squeeking and wobbeling around and all the plastic things (at the bottom and to prevent the screen from touching the keyboard) fell of.

    and some other minor issues.

Any solutions other than Dell amazing help (please reinstall windows and get back to us...)? :D

I have some problems with my m11x which I thought I'd ask here about.

when I'm using the discrete graphics card the temp on it goes up to around 80-85 with hardly any load at all. Even watching a 360/480p youtube movie heats it up. As a consequence of this I think that the card is clocking down. This is based on the fact that the entire system gets really sluggish.

The same goes when playing games, I can play fine for the first 15 mins or so but after that the fps starts to drop.

Should I contact Dell and have them fix it or is it driver/software based?

Wow! I'm not a systems engineer, but real temperatures of 80-85C seems extreme for an M11xR1 SU4100. Usually the maximum temperature of an nVidia card is around 100-110C and you don't want to go there.

My cia 1998 Toshiba with winXP Pro runs at 70C and that burns my lap.

My M11xR1 SU7300 gets temperatures of 60-65C max with the GPU over-clocked and playing Crysis, which is pretty taxing on both CPU and GPU.

If you play the uTube 'movie' using only intergrated graphics (Which an M11x should be able to do no problems at res of 480p) and the temperature remains around 40-50C THEN I would really start to question the GPU card.

I am assuming you have not modified the GPU in anyway or upgraded from the original nVidia switchable drivers.

I'd get some HWMonitor stats and then give Dell a call.

Thought so. It kept pretty nice temps when I first got it but the last few months it has begun to heat up. Will keep HWmonitor running while performing some different tasks and see what I'll get.

I got it as a replacement for a XPS1330 whose big problem was overheating GPU(we're talking 100+C sometimes) so heatissues is not what I'm in the mood for...

    New update:

Both the CPU and the GPU has peaked at around 93C
that makes the system really sluggish(IE I can't play any games or anyting on it)

The computer sometimes freezes up, especially when doing HDD-intensive tasks such as transferring files.

The computer now dies as soon as I remove the power cord. No what the charge on the battery is.

I have as of now contacted dell. Will update with their response.

Another question: When i got this replacement it said in the shipping manifest that it came with one year premium support. When i look at the supportinfo for the system on "my pages" it however says that no warranty is linked to the system. Anyone know why that is?

I dunno on the last question, but 93C!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?...!

I got to a max of ~60C on both the CPU cores and the GPU after playing SC2 for a few hours with my friends, and this was on the carpet, too!

    EDIT: on my R1 machine.

Nah, the first response will probably be something along with the lines of the previous one I got.

I told them i had run dell diagnostics, and reported my HWmonitortemps along with the logfile from HWmonitor. Their response was"Hello, I am sorry to hear about your problems. Please run the dell diagnostics and also check your temps with HWmonitor and report them back to me"

Yea, they really read their supportmail before they answer.. But on the up-side i got to write a sarcastic response about them reading my previous mail :)

EDIT: On the plus-side thoug. According to HWmonitor my battery has a -(!)7%wear level.

    Thank you :)

Which little program were you talking about. It seemed like you were talking about ThrottleStop, but I am not sure about that...

At any rate, ThrottleStop isn't useful on the R1.
