The pin mod has succeeded with a few variants branching off it, a VID mod has been made for those who want to clock further and a VGPU BIOS mod enabling .95v has achieved results.

So far, I'm working on a VGPU vmod, unlocking the BIOS and maybe modding the R1 BIOS to enable 333mhz Overclock mode but haven't found the time with the equivalent of the SATs approaching.

I recently got my m11x r3, and it's awesome. I upgraded to a 750 gb 7200 rpm hdd that I had and I upgraded to the killer wireless n card. The only problem I have is that the touchpad is getting very shiny. It might be due to wear or the oils in my fingers, but it is disconcerting. It is only in the one little spot where I use it the most, so I believe it is one of those options. It doesn't affect the usage of the pad, but it creates a mirror-like shine, which stands out. I am just worried that my unit has a weaker touchpad or something, and I want to know if anyone else has this problem. I have tried searching, but I couldn't find any very specific answers (and I don't want to search through the 600+ pages of this forum and its earlier parts). Any help or reassurance would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm going with oily fingers theory. Used to get all sorts of muck on kb's and mousepads from office ladies that ALL had a bottle of hand lotion nearby. Anyway it left a slick sheen.

When and if I get my screen replaced (still on original) I'm going to see if I can worm my way into getting a three antenna one. Think this option comes with the Bigfoot 1103 option. I'd be happy to pay the extra for it.

Good to see DavyGT is still engineering great things on the back of a packet.

Never been brave enough to pin mod my M11xR1. I even bought the 0.5W 10K resistors. :D

Mine is a week old and I've noticed it as well. It is getting shiny in the center

I think it has more to do with the scrubbing than a weaker or defective touchpad.

Even on my MacBook Pro I've noticed that as well, and it uses a glass touchpad.

    Cheers.

I hear ya - in the same boat, thought about it and thought stuff it if I really need that extra performance I would just go get an R3.

Don't really want to kill the r1 just yet. But if I ever get a new mobo.............maybe I'll have a crack.

I just had my screen replaced. I phoned up Dell I asked for the 3 antenna screen, and even offered to pay for it. The rep basically said because it's not available in Europe I can't have it, no matter how much money I offer Dell.

New screen is better than the old and the hinge is more sturdy. The only annoying thing is that it doesn't close properly as the screen is too close to the keyboard near the hinge. I didn't notice it until the service guy had gone.

I would also donate if you could get the 333mhz bios working. What would this actually give us R1 owners?

Bought parts from these guys over the years and they seem OK.

Bits, bobs and spare parts for old PCs.

It's come to this.. M11x's being disassembled.

i have a few extra parts in case but id really like to get a spare mobo. i plan to have this lil guy for some time to come.

id sell everything and grab a R3 if the battery life times weren't so inconsistent. the ability to game is the cherry on top that makes this lil R1 my "side arm" of choice. but battery life is at the top of my list in terms of needs so i cant really trade better performance for it.

After over a year and a half of owning the M11x I still appreciate the size, power and the battery life. Once the screen got fixed it's still one of the best laptops that I have ever owned. or been owned by. :p

I'm right there with you guys on still lovin my R1, the battery life is my priority as well and is really untouchable in terms of any other gaming laptops R2&R3 included. The R3 performance sure looks nice, but I see at least a few more years out of this R1 for my needs. This form factor really is absolutely perfect for me. By the time I am ready for upgrade I am hoping they will have a m12 in m11 form factor(fill the extra bezel space). My 2y/o son knocked m11 on floor the other day and caused the early signs of the hinge problem.

    Hi everyone,

Posting here for the first time.

I love my m11xr1. I have it permanently overclocked to 1.73Ghz, and it's rare that it simply won't run a particular game. I generally prefer laptops because I like to play MMOs on the sofa while my wife watches TV - sitting at a desk just doesn't suit my lifestyle. So I realise I have to make some compromises when it comes to power.

Right now I am only interested in playing SW: TOR, and while the beta ran really quite reasonably well, the CPU speed is letting the GPU down a bit.

So, I was wondering if it's possible to overclock the CPU up to 2Ghz, and what negative effects that will have on my system. I've had it for 2 years (though the mobo is only a year old), so I'm wondering how the life expectancy will be affected, and if overclocking it is worth it at all.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks :)

Anyone here should look into joining the NBR Folding@home team. It's linked in my sig, but I'm using my M11x R1 for folding and the GPU is a little folding beast! In just over a week we've shot up to the 5K range in team rank. Next stop 4K teams till we hit the top 100!

Happy Holidays, i am wondering with the 290.53 beta driver work when you have the optimus drivers installed or just install over the hybrid drivers? Feels like everything is getting dizzy with all the mods you can do with the R1 these days happy folks are keeping this amazing machine alive.

I just realized that the left built in speaker in the m11x is not as loud as the right one. Is this the case for all M11x's? I heard that it has something to do with speaker placement.

The speaker placement really is wrong but to keep the size there probably could of never put them in the right place without losing sound quality but overall that is kinda true but usually when that happens your speakers might be dying on one side maybe but usually when i have read that it was usually that result. I am also interested in the modded Vbios and Modded A05 Bios and what's the point of playing battlefield 3 on this little guy it just can't do it, it's not made to play every game. But i am interested in seeing a wicked way to play it.

The thing is it's only noticeable when you test the speakers individually. The other thing is that the system is only about 4 months old so the chances of the speaker dying seem slim. It's less about one side being louder and more about one side having more bass when tested individually in the speaker settings.

I'm only suggesting that you confirm it isn't an illusion for speakers... they are not mounted symmetrically Documentation

Actual speaker issues have been reported though so you might actually have one that is faulty or some wiring issue etc.

I own my R1 for just a little over the 1 year mark. My right speaker blew within 2 months. I was watching a movie and then I notice my right speakers went out. I disassemble and check for loose wiring but everything was good there. I didn't bother fixing it until just a few days ago :D ; right before my warranty expired. I also replaced my screen and the palm rest. The grill piece that illuminates wore out and partially lit up only; that's why the palm rest was replaced.

my interest is to create two ways: powerSaver vs highPerformance
    Overclock: Disabled/Enabled
Graphics: Integrated/Discrete [ NO switchable because no future drivers will support it]
    the combo will be:
Overclock Disabled = Graphics Integrated [battery life over 10h for reading]
    vs
Overclock Enabled = Graphics Discrete [+gpu vmod]

FOR ALIENWARE M11x R1: my idea for overclocking would be with the help of AHMED HOSSAM from bios-mods because he came as close as possible from what I looked on the web:

    100 - 133 - 166 - 200 - 266 - 300 - 333 - 400
    101 - 001 - 011 - 010 - 000 - 111 - 100 - 110

Official Dell-Alienware Overclocking options from BIOS reprograms the FSLx from 010 to 000, our best shot will be using the same command on other [asm] bios register:

    166 to 300
    011 to 111 [FSL-A changed]

    166 to 333
    011 to 100 [command RegisterInverse]

TESTING Alienware M11x moded BIOS means ALMOST no risk because it has hardware based BIOS Recovery using the key_END in case of failure

PS: Right now, without bios mod you can pinmod FSL-A, FSL-B AND FSL-C and you will get
    100 to 300
    101 to 111
but will boot at 100Mhz ?

Not sure if this is the best place to post but wondered if anyone has tried the m11xr3 with Win8CP?
I have been running it the last few days and all seems OK but not had the chance to reinstall all Dell software yet.
One thing I did notice, if you try and update the graphics drivers (Intel or nVidia) then the laptop will not start up again on reboot - you will get an IRQ error or just a blank blue screen with the mouse pointer - a right PITA!
basically means the HDMI out etc does not work

Will post more when I figure things out but if anyone has any tips/workarounds etc then let me know

UPDATE: Installed the nVidia 295.73-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe drivers without any issues or lockups. Games seem to run OK and HDMI out working OK as well.
UPDATE2: Looks like it was not as successful as I hoped. Switching back from the HDMI output to the internal screen caused IRQ blue screens again and needed a system restore to get working ...... looks like back to the drawing board!
UPDATE3: OK, if you only boot and use the HDMI -or- boot and use the internal screen it is fine. Trying to switch between the 2 gives the BSOD
    Thanks

Hello people I recently got hold of an m11xr1 with issues of ALIEN-FX...all lights (kb, speaker grills, activity etc) appear off except the backlid alienhead. I bought it online with no returns. The CC in the directory says version 2.5.54 ..while afx tester says:

    Board info :

    current ver 2.00.01
    upgrading to 2.00.01

when I open cc everything loads i.e the theme.. zone color editors etc. I can edit save colors and all but when the settings are applied nothing happens. I dont have any unknown devices in the device mngr list nor .net errors...I do get a failed installation of 1394 EEE device at win startup but this device reads installed in device mngr. Would upgrading CC to a newer version suitable for m14,m15 n 17x, help or is it a risk? Alien autopsy and the bios diagnostics report nothing but pass for all hardware. Kindly advise all possible solutions.

Edit: Which version of ACC do I Install in the event of the problem resolving? The latest for my m11x is the same old 2.5.54...can I install 2.8.8.0 safely or any other version?

Personally, I use AlienFXLite (I don't care for the Alienware software.
When you say the theme loads, do you mean the lights come on until you hit OK or it shows correctly on the screen?
It's possible that you may have a hardware issue.
If it doesn't work with your Alienware software and it doesn't work with AlienFXLite, that doesn't sound good.
    Check http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/458528-alienfx-lite-linux-windows-alienfx-tool.html for AlienFXLite.

The theme loads without any errors but no lights whatsoever..I restored the OS from the recovery partition..but can seem to make the lights work. I don't have any unknown devices in the device mngr list nor any errors. I took out the battery to power drain it and when I restarted it the 'Alienware' on the lcd lit up for second alongwith the power alienhead button showing activity of the hdd with purple/blue and green colors changes at random. So there is some hope maybe...

Doesn't sound like software to me. Without checking my info first I wonder if you have a bad ribbon or similar connector issue. Reseat? I dont think the hw checks look for this sort of problem.

Once you sort it out you can "disable" the app from startup and free resources. If you launch it again the hog comes back. snort! This (I think) is where fx lite comes in.

So what do you recommend I check first? The weird part is this laptop has been shipped by dell in April 2011 which sorta conforms with the recovery image being made in Aug,2011. When I restored the operating system to factory settings from the image, all the software installed on it had an August 2011 date stamp. Which means the CC was already on the highest version for my m11xR1, how the hell did it corrupt the alienfx controller even if someone restored it to factory settings?

Connections. Free to check but involves removing some bits and bobs to have a look. Check first for what connections to expect and what they look like.

Hello peepz I want to customize my M11x. I own the M11x R1 and would love to mod it as well. Firstly painting is out of the question as I'm not comfortable disassembling the whole laptop. So I decided to go the easy route and apply a skin to my back cover. I would love to skin it to either Maranello Red or the Nebula red, the skin making company wants a sort of template kind so the design lines and grooves are prominent..is there any1 who can you make me a template in adobe photoshop that replicates the back cover of the laptop including the lines, grooves, alienhead, length and height so I could print it? regards

It's been 2 years since I bought my r1. Though I have a desktop, my r1 accompanies me to class and when I go home for the holidays. Sure, it's definitely showing its age, but it's doing fine for me. Now if only I could get a better battery since my r1 is at 80% of its original capacity.

Yerp, that almost mirrors my situation too. Bought mine on March 2010 (3 years old)

Hinges/Monitor(Under Dell replacement plan) replaced approx 6 months ago.

HWMonitor indicates a battery wear level off approx 27%, which means I've lost most of my long battery life of days of old.
Still get an indicated 5hrs battery life...gosh I remember when it sometimes used to say 8hrs.

I too, have a Desktop PC, but quite often use my M11xR1 plugged into my U2410 24" IPS monitor(s) via VGA and integrated GPU.
HDMI/DispalyPort and dual 24" monitors if the mood takes me.

Even did a benchmark using the 'new' 3DMark v1.0 as a salute to the old days. (See benchmark thread)

The SU7300 1.6GHz processor is showing it's age, but still does the job.

And what a laugh, there is no DELL/Alienware device to replace my M11xR1 with.
Would have to look to other manufacturers now.

But still VERY happy with my M11xR1

    Still using M11Xr1

New Games like Dead Space 3 and DMC still work great on the R1 :)
