Your cpu has 2 cores and 2 threads.bThere is no problem, it is supposed to look like that.

Thanks, I'm actually asking for someone on another forum, and don't own an M11x myself. The picture I posted is actually from a Core 2 Quad, so you saying "it's supposed to look like that" has me hesitant.

He has now taken a shot of his Task Manager for me:

Is this the correct reading for a Core i5-520UM? I am under the impression that all 4 threads should show up under the task manager.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Curious, I haven't seen any evidence of it, but is the i5/i7 UM processors prone to core parking at all, like the quadcore mobile versions?

That is wrong, it should show 4 threads. A Core 2 Quad and Core i5-520UM task managers should both show 4 spaces, with the C2Q all 4 will be the cpu cores, with the i5, two will be cpu cores and two are the threads. That task manager is missing two more spaces

    I believe so:

    Well, hmm... thanks.

I have no idea what's wrong with his i5.

I just figured I’d say Hi to everyone, I just purchased a refurbished M11x R2 core i5, 4gb ram, 160gb hdd, stealth black. It did have one small ding on the front that isn’t very noticeable. So far I love it, especially because I paid $655 shipped thanks to some people on here posting the 20% off refurbished computers @ Dell. If anyone else is thinking of getting a refurbished one I would recommend it especially if you are on a budget.

That's such a good deal for that degree of tech, bully for you! If you're into it, check out the Throttlestop thread... there is a lot of untapped potential in these processors; Uncle Webb is a saint.

Thanks man, I was going to check it out. I have been seeing that one of the first thing people do to these is update the drivers and get Throttlestop.

Hi everyone. I just got my m11x r2. used notebook but still in very good condition.
I got the core i7 640UM, 8 GB DDR3, and 500 GB HD. I really love this notebook. It's small enough to carry it around, yet very powerful.
I am really glad to find out that many of the m11x owner gather here and can have a lot of info on my machine.
It's really worth the money I paid to buy this.

Hyperthreading is turned off on his computer I think. When you disable hyperthreading it only shows the physical cores of the computer, and not the threads (because they arent on). I can do that with my desktop, but Im not sure how to disable it on the m11x (or re-enable it). I do believe its done through bios, but cant find any settings for it in the bios. I would search around on google for info on re-enabling hyperthreading through windows, if its possible, or tell him to contact dell, because if it IS and i5, then there SHOULD be 4 threads.

Not quite. One of the cores is disabled and his i5 is only showing the one core with its two threads.

msconfig > Boot > Boot Advanced Options

It very likely has the Number of processors option checked. It should be unchecked.

Hi all. My relatively new M11xR2 (i7-640UM, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD) started acting up today. When I press the power button the monitor backlight will come up, so will the status area lights, but that's about it; no alien head and no "press f2 <blah>" prompt and the computer just won't budge. Hitting any button (other than Fn-buttons) repeatedly will fill up the keyboard buffer and then any button press will give a beep. I already tried removing the cmos coin-cell battery to force a cmos clear but nothing changed. Does anyone have any idea what may have caused this and what should I do?

Thanks for the reply mate. I tried to go through the chat option on support.dell.com but having bought my laptop off of a Belgian seller (through eBay) and living in Greece, diverts me to the local support branch which seems to have no online alienware support (and no chat whatsoever). The local telephone support works mon-fri so I was hoping someone online might have some idea other than waiting till monday morning... :)

Anyone know of a utility that will swap the top function keys with their feature keys? I don't use the function keys, but I sure do find myself doing Fn+F8/F9 a lot for volume.

Ordered my M11xR2 on the 29th of Sept. Received it on the 4th. Upgraded to 8GB and upgraded to Bluetooth. LCD has two clear lines on it so I am having it replaced under warranty tomorrow. The back also has a hairline crack so I am hoping they will replace that to. Tech support stated the technician who is coming out will have all LCD parts. Hope this resolves my issues for I do like this machine

It all comes as the LCD assembly. Lid shell, LCD panel, webcam, microphone, wifi and wlan aerials, hinge, etc. Takes about 15 minutes from the time the tech sets his tools down on the table.

Well my LCD was replaced. And you were right it came with the whole assembly. The only thing different was the the new LCD came with only WLAN arials and mine had WIFI and WLAN. I do not hook up via mobile broadband so I let it go. I did not want to wait for another part. I did not want him to dis assemble the LCD so I let it go at that.
