So I'm writing in with my success story, I got the new panel in and working last night, and to confirm things that others have stated and add some of my own.

First, I just want to say "Thank you" to simonmpoulton for getting back to me. I noted your advice but in the end it was cheaper for me to buy a non-glossy display from ebay.
Taking off the cover is a task. As others have mentioned it is held to the screen by a thick, double-sided tape. Be sure to peel the cover away from the screen slowly. I broke a couple of the little clippy/catchy things that are around the edge taking it off but that seems to be par for the course. It's back on now and looks fine.
If you haven't got the connection in the right way (see below), the POST will register it as a failed LCD and the laptop won't boot. I freaked myself out when I heard the beeps (8 of them). And then the light on my charger went off and it had to be plugged out and back in before it would power the laptop again. Once I changed the cable orientation everything worked fine though, despite making a strange noise with the cable in the wrong way....
You don't need any tape to get the screen in and in a good position. The two bars that run up either side that hold the original screen in place do the job well enough, and I assume will do so unless you drop the laptop very hard (in which case the screen slightly jumping out of position will be the least of your worries). Both the original and new screens have mounts but they are not used (yes, the screw mounts for the original are not used), the screen is simply pressed into place with the bars and some other grooves to hold it.
Pathfindercod, I used the following parts:
The screen was from this listing- http://www.ebay.com/itm/LP116WH4-SL...C7-/171615757322?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:IE:3160 It arrived pretty quickly and it works, as you can see above. I found this screen to have a bit of a reddish tint, which I removed with the calibration function built into windows. The screen colours feel warmer than the old one, despite being brighter.
The extension cable I got from here- http://www.aliexpress.com/item/17-3...ctor-Extension-Connector-F1021/916884821.html (Which seems to be sold out now but you can find other items using the same name.) A word of caution about this cable, it went into the back of the new screen with the *black side facing out*. This is not the way that you would be inclined to insert it (the black side is the side not visible on the listing picture).
Really happy with my upgrade. For me it was all about the blacks but it's brighter and has way better viewing angles to boot.
Cheers everyone!

Hello, I know this thread is old. Has anyone done the swap recently?
I got the parts but after connecting the screen it seems to look fine until Windows is loaded, then the screen colors and such are all messed up. You can't really make out any icons or barely the Alienware head on the screen. Seems like some kind of driver issue but most on here said they did not have any issues.
Just wondering if anyone has an idea of what could be causing it.
Thanks.
