Hey guys, I was wondering what's the minimum things to keep for warranty to be valid.

Like, do I need to keep the box? Or the installation CD?

Being the packrat I am I would recommend keeping the box regardless of warranty. It will help you to sell the laptop down the road to have original packaging and is a great place to store the manuals and restore discs.

As for the installation cd, why would you get rid of it at all.

For warranty all you will need is the service number on the laptop itself. When you send a product back for repair, IF you have to send it in at all, you normally just send the unit and keep the cables and discs yourself.

I just spoke with Alienware this evening for a potential memory issue. On the standard warranty they were willing to send me replacement ram to install myself. If it turns out to be the mainboard, they send someone to the home.

    Hope this help,
    Cheers

yeah you need all original parts to return the laptop for warranty. If the tech is coming to the house then it does not matter just make sure the part they are replacing for you is the stock part that is installed in your laptop. You can always buy the Hard drive aftermarket they are typically seagate HD and install it in the laptop and send it off.

Huh? I think most are Hitachi with the drop sensor... not Seagate. Mine is Hitachi and even has the drop sensor app installed in the Control Panel (250GB Best Buy retail original M11x). I'm pretty sure that the early 500GB ones were Hitachi as well.

they pretty much use anything that is available and priced right.

Both my m15x and m11x came with seagate, a i5 gateway i had a while ago has a Western digital. You yourself had hitachi in the m11x while other members after you posted the seagate. Just slap any Hard drive in the laptop they are not gonna come after you as long as the size is the same you will be fine.

It really does not matter what hard drive you have in your laptop when you send it back, as long as the reason you are sending your laptop back has nothing to do with the hard drive or hard drive connectors.

The important part is that you are only guaranteed to have your laptop repaired/restored to its purchased condition. So if you leave your $500 256GB SSD in there, you might get your laptop back with a 160GB 5400rpm mechanical hard drive. The idea of keeping the original parts that came with the laptop is primarily aimed at protecting any aftermarket investments that you made, and not aimed at keeping your warranty valid.
