Thanks for your update so far. How would you rate the screen? Many people are claiming that it is inferior to R1 and R2

Actually not so impressed with the screen. I did not see a M11x R1 or R2, but compared to the M15x its inferior. I'd describe it as slightly cloudy, unless your directly in front of it, and the screen is titled slightly. Then its fine.

Are you talking about cloudy when it is viewed on an angle? Because viewing angle is not really important since it is only 1 person that will use it anyway unless you need an IPS display.

As long as the colors are natural and brightness is good then that's fine.

Loving it so far. It feels really solid and the keyboard is nice and tactile. I thought it might be difficult to type on as its smaller than what I am used too, but so far no problems. The Nebula Red finish is excellent, its a slightly deeper red than the M15x.

As an aside, I use 802.11n around the house and the M11x seems to have the best reception of any of my devices, including an iPad.

Sandy Bridge CPU's don't and won't have much option for an overclock since they technically are overclocked on the fly as needed.

Aha, yes. I entered BIOS and there is a Performance Option (description is Memory and CPU), currently disabled. If I enable it shows:

    Overclocking features
    >BCLK

If I open up BCLK, it shows a few options, including:

    New frequency 10Khz [9980]
    New SSC 0.01% [32]

Plus some diagnostic information and the ability to apply immediately, permanently or once.

Maybe could break 9k points in 3DMark06 if overclocking the GT540M? Perhaps more? I hope the temperatures are ok in the R3. I would hate to see any famous Dell throttling scheme kick in...

Here comes the elephant in the room: The hinge: Is it crooked (LCD touching the keyboard when closed)? Test it out with a small piece of paper and pull it on the sides to see if it is free.

Oh yea Nomad and red, the 2 most important question of them all are the hinge and screen touching keyboard showing vertical lines issue on r1/r2.

Are the hinges align correctly? When opening and closing the lid, is it quiet with no creaking sound? When closing lid then opening, does it show vertial line marks on the screen?

Opening and closing the lid is quiet and smooth.

I don't see any lines on the screen.

When the lid is closed everything is lined up nicely.

The reviews I read were very conflicting. Some claimed 12.5hrs without wifi, others claimed 4.5hrs with wifi.

Appreciate the R3 info in this thread, keep it up ;)

If you have the cash and you care about viewing angles then grab a cheap IPS monitor.

If you wanna stick with TN panel and under $200 bucks, get a 720p or 1600x900 monitor instead of 1080p. 21.5-22" should be the sweet spot. I'm not talking about HDTV here, I'm talking about real computer external monitors via HDMI (not vga).

The reason I'm recommending a 1600x900 resolution is that your fps won't dip down as much when gaming compared to full 1080p. 1080p is perfectly adequate for watching movies though and if you want to go ahead with the 1080p screen then go for it and just hope the GT 540m can handle it at med-high settings with smooth fps gameplay.

Unfortunately Sandy Bridge OCing is multiplier only (only a few Mhz via FSB), which I don't even think you can do with mobile chips. Best we can do is try to enforce maximum turbo boost. Still, clock per clock, it's faster than first gen i-series.

I believe 2nd gen i-series is about 20% faster clock per clock than first gen.

2600 series 4 core was on par if not faster than Gulftown 6 core in just about evertyhing except heavily threaded apps.

wPrime 1024M - lower time is better

    R3 - 838.785 s
    R2 - 765.834 s - BCLK 166 MHz
    R2 - 730.535 s - BCLK 175 MHz

In longer benchmarks where the R3 throttles back the turbo boost, it's going to have a tough time keeping up with an overclocked R2 running the Core i7-640UM. The Core i7-2657 will only be marginally faster than the present Core i7-2617 when it is available in the R3.

    How about some Cinebench testing?

On my r2 in sig which is at 160fsb for now i get this

    1024mb 810.081 s

    32mb 25.686 s

And get around 8700 in 06.

    Vantage is around 3800.

But it does seem when the gpu gets overclock on the r3 it will go right over 9k that also depends how well the gpu will overclock.

Pretty happy the r2 still fairs well against new tech :)

Red also looks nice on the r3 :)

Would love too see some gaming benchmarks of peaples r3s so i can compare.

    And ofcource battery life.

Give the R3 some time. The poor guy just got it, it's bone stock with stock drivers and it gets a 84xx. Not bad really for the small machine. Lets see what it scores when someone oc's the video card bclk... and also does some optimizing.

CPU throttling is already kicking in.

    Thanks.

You can't force maximum Turboboost, at least not with Throttlestop as Intel has locked down these CPUs. While Sandy Bridge is clock for clock faster, it has lost it's clockspeed advantage here due to throttling which means the first gen Core i7 can be faster as it has a clockspeed advantage to negate the clock for clock improvement. This is shown in Cinebench 10 and 11.5 as well as WPrime here.

That's with Tassadar898's i5. Would be interesting to see what an i7 can achieve with a GPU like his.

I'll like to see what someone with an i7 scores with the 335M overclocked.

I know that you're probably drowning in requests already Redback, but would you mind taking some well lit photos of the exterior of the m11x? Most of the pictures online appear very dark and look almost burgundy to me, which is not that attractive IMO. I'm wondering if it's just one of those common cases where pictures don't do the color justice.

    Much appreciated! :D

i would love to see an r2 i7 (overclocked) user with a highly overclockable GT335 scores. i think it could break 9.3k possibly?

if they could manage a really high overclock like what i have on my GT335 (605/926/1520. ATM) they could get an all time high score.

    Re: Battery Life

So far, so good. I used the M11x for an hour last night, basic web surfing via Wifi. I also rebooted it three times to check BIOS info. When I turned it off at the end of the hour the window battery meter was 87%. The power mode was set to power saver and the screen brightness was 70%.
