After working for one year and a half, the optical drive of my m15x R2 went out of order. It is not burning disc properly at the beginning and eventually not reading any disc. More annoyingly, it causes the system to freeze.

I once thought that it was a software problem for the freezing. I tried to re-install Windows and Windows DVD can't be recognized. I phoned up Dell CS and they sent me a technician with a replacement DVD drive after 2 days.

After almost an hour, a new DVD drive is up and running smoothly! The technician is very gentle to my m15x and I'm really pleased with his service.

It seems that there are quite a few optical drive of m15x failing. The technician told me that this is the second time he fix a m15x optical drive. I saw a few similar cases on the web too. Hopefully Dell would change the supplier and does not let this little component ruin Alienware's reputation.

P.S. I live in UK ;) Guys, is the technical support service that bad in other countries I wonder. Please let me know :p

if you mean the service, i found it was fantastic.
i had a great experience with the tech they sent me.

and yes as for the optical drive problem, it is pretty bad. not only that, it's one of the most annoying components to reach. you wouldn't believe it takes 10x more work to remove the optical drive than pretty much any other part (as you can see in your first photo)... btw i hope no screws were lost ;)
I decided to replace my optical unit with a 2nd hdd. now i use an external slimline burner in the rare case i need to read a dvd.

I've had two dvd drives put into my machine. Both times have been next day service. Dell has done good with service. I'm really glad I got the 3 year warranty.
