I recently bought 16 gb of ram to upgrade the 8 gb in my laptop. What I thought to be an easy upgrade turned into a headscratcher. I put in the 16gb, booted up, power adapter warning page showed (also got a 240w) and on that page it showed the 16 gb as detected, it doesn't show in the Bios of course. It gets to the Windows 8 splash screen then blue screens with the new W8 blue screen sad face and automatically restarts and continues to get into a loop. The blue screen error is "Windows 8 kernel security check failure." if it helps and I'm currently using an i5-540m about to upgrade to a 920xm on Friday, though I'm certain the processor can still support 16 gb. I tried one 4 GB and one 8 GB stick and it showed the correct 12 GB detected but did more of the same crashing.

You can turn off the adapter warning in the BIOS.

Grab Memtest, and boot it from a CD or USB stick. Could be one of the sticks is bad; always best to rule that out first.

I believe I have seen this issue here before in the forums somewhere. I'm on Windows 8 and my pair of 8gb ram's are working fine. The problem lies within your processor, in which only the i7 series could support up to 16gb RAM. Try again when you get your 920XM.

Checked with Memtest, it shows the screen for a second then restarts. I took a picture of it for a second to take a look and it showed the "Memory SPD Infromation" correctly.

Have you tried a clean install since then?

Hey, I have had the exact same problem with my M15x!!! apparently it's your FSB. Your FSB is running at 1066 with that i5 in there. However, you need an i7 720qm (which has a FSB of 1333) or higher, like that 920xm thats coming.

My suggestion is to wait for the i7 920xm, and install the cpu with the ram and everything will be fine!

Here is my story with problems installing the 16GB of ram:

Yeah it fixed it and my expresscard problem was fixed by putting in my HDD caddy, turns out the expresscard cage wasn't even plugged into the motherboard. Whoever assembled it at Dell must of screwed up, they also put a golden washer on one of the long palm rest screws and it turns out either the screw or the hole itself is stripped as the screw won't stay in without a washer but I couldn't/can't take off the magnesium chassis without removing the palm rest screw so I had to strip the washer and tape it up. Alienware quality has really gone down since they got bought out by Dell.

This will decidedly be the last product I buy from Dell or Alienware. The Steambox from Valve and it's partners is coming so I'm sure it's build quality will be leagues better.

Glad to see it worked out!

Don't let one bad experience get the best of you. Alienware's are amazing.

No this is like the fifth bad experience with Dell. I had an XPS 710 desktop back in the day and I have an M11X. Both had numerous problems and then I had to deal with numerous problems with management and tech support.
