    hey everybody.

So this is my first attempt at benchmarking my machine. Did it late last night and was too lazy to kill all the apps while benching hehe .. ended up with a score of P5666

did a little searching to compare with other people online .. and i saw this guy with a score of P7114 using the same CPU and GPU ... compared his with mine and his CPU score is way dodgy! .. can you really overclock the i720QM to that extent?! 0.o

    Result

    3DMark Score
    5666.16 | 7114.79 | 3DMarks

He has run it with the PPU enabled. Nvidia Physx kicks in and inflates the CPU score dramatically. Trust me if you run it again and go into options and uncheck "PPU Disabled" your scores will increase. However we advise against that as then the comparison falls apart between Ati and nvidia GPUs.

No, the other guy had PhysX enabled, no way you can get 26k CPU score with a 720QM.

But your GPI score could be higher, what driver are you using? Did you overclock the GPU or not? I got 6.2k GPU score with the 260m.

Edit: Cheers widezu, beat me :D

ahh .. i see i see ... i cant muck about with the 3DMark Vantage settings anyway, coz im running the basic edition =)

im only running at stock clocks at the moment, using the latest nVidia drivers.

just ran again with all the apps and unnecessary services stopped .. improved the score marginally to 5691 =)

    Result

also just did the PCMark7 and got 1891 PCMarks
    Result

but looks like i got my kicked by this other guy coz he has got 8 gb of ram and probably an SSD harddrive ...

both of which im planning to get...ngek ngek ngek ... but ill start another thread for that later ..

what over clocking tools do you guys recommend?

8GB ram and SSD hardly do anything in benchmark scores.

Generally, that's exactly right, but PCMarks is one of those all-around, office suite type of benchmarks where SSD/HD performance has a large impact. Not sure about memory.

Which driver do you use? Your GPU score seems to be pretty low. I guess you're running at stock clocks?

EleJota, this is one of the reasons we have the benchmark thread/board. If you look there you will discover the following leading scores for the 260M in 3dMark Vantage:

Further inquiry would show that the 4th score (forresterLV) was run at the default clocks (550/950), so there is your basis for stock performance. Imageshack - 3dmarkvantage.png. He has a 920xm CPU, so his score will be higher on that account. Adjusted for processors, your score looks fine for a completely stock rig. All you have to do is look.

    @The Revelator, @widezu69

yup. I was thinking of getting an ssd and more ram for my overall activity, because i dont really game that much these days, so i figured ram and hdd would be of more benefit to me at the moment, coz i multitask a lot of apps and tend to get quite a bit of hdd trashing ... annoying!

however, i also wanted to compare my stock machine to the resutls in the benchmarks thread ... so i have a rough idea of how my machine is doing .. and it all looks good =)

now im getting a bit itchy and feel like overclocking! hehe ... what overclocking tools do you guys recommend?

I'll defer to widezu69 on that question. He's our Nvidia expert.

Haha thanks @Rev. Well the GTX 260m is a decent card. My favourite is MSI Afterburner as it also has temperature readings etc. Inch it up slowly and when you've hit the wall, such as benchmarks start to fail at very high clocks, lower them and you will have a decent overclock. Or just let me know and I will overvolt the vbios for you giving you a bit more headroom.

Pros: Better stability at higher clocks. Allows extreme overclocking.
Cons: More heat and power draw.

ok... so i redid the stock benchmark coz I forgot to record the temps, and it was actually worse than the first stock benchmark i did! 0.o ... P5666 vs P5605!
    Result

That is so weird, coz the second time i did it to record the temps, i killed a bunch of apps and services too ... gah!

Anyway, i went ahead and overclocked the card and managed to this score safely:
    P5605 VS P6634
    Result

I tried pushing it higher, but then 3dmark vantage crashed on me. Time to trim the clocks, but i noticed that after the crash, the 3d clock speeds are throttled and the only way I found to remove the throttle was to reboot the machine! argh! pain in the butt! .. Changing the clock speeds back to stock in MSI Afterburner or restarting MSI-A had no effect.

Anyone know how to unthrottle the clocks without rebooting?

    FYI:
According to MSI Afterburner, the clocks were throttled to Core:414, Shader:828, Memory:301

    According to HWiNFO64 it was Core:383, Shader:767, Memory:301

    Weirdddddd ... =(

damnit ... tried benching overclocking again but stuck at around 6k GPU score ... pushing my clocks further results in a crash and the clocks being stuck at the numbers i posted earlier .... sigh .. need to reboot now .. =(

@widezu69 how do you overvolt? is it something easy i can do on my own?

is it possible to overclock the i720?
