I have been reading here and everywhere else about switching video cards and I think I want to goto from the 5730 to the 5870 but before I do I want to know a few things over concerns on things I have been reading.

    1. Can I keep using the same drivers, or is there a special driver to use for it?

    2. I have read on using thermal paste a thin coat and some thermal pads once that is done and installed is there anything software wise to do to keep it from burning up?

    3. Whats the best GPU software to use to change clock and all that?
( I have one downloaded MSI afterburner, will that work?)

4.Anything need to be done with the Video Card Bios?

    5. Anything else I should know before I go through this?

Sorry for all the stupid questions this is just my first Alienware and I want to make sure it is done right. Thanks in Advance, I can't wait! :D

I cant get the AMD GPU tool to work keeps telling me to right click and use it as administrator but when I try to right click it doesnt give me the option.

Where did you get your pads from? Let me know if they work.

    Thanks

Should I just go with the 5850 through dell? they quoted me, Subtotal is $279.99, tax $24.85, shipping of $10.99, total of $315.83.

Yes. The 5850M will perform as well as the 5870M and is much easier to live with since it is officially supported (whereas the 5870M is not). In addition, there are no vbios or fan related issues with the 5850M since the card was designed for use in the M15x. The Dell 5850M is a great laptop video card and will provide an enormous performance boost over the 5730M.

You should reinstall the video drivers after installing the 5850M (or any new video card). The best and easiest overclocking utility for the 5850M is Sapphire TriXX. Sapphire Technology - TriXX Tweak Utility. (MSI Afterburner will also work, but is more limited.)

Inap's GPU Replacement Guide will walk you through the process of installing your 5850M. Download M15x GPU.rar from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way. His Repasting Guide will also provide useful information and techniques. Download THERMAL PASTE GUIDE.rar from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way. Lot of help available here on any aspect of your project.
