A friend up mine upgraded his m17x and feeling pity over my m15x with a 240m he gave me his old card. The card is a 6870m, I found and read over the guides for the 6970m and 6990m and found one on flashing a 5870m but havent seen one that seems completely applicable to my situation. Since it came from another alienware is any kind of flashing required? What bios do I need to be at? Really excited about the card, though its probably not much to most here its a huge upgrade for me, but im really getting confused and dont want to screw this up. Any advice or pointers?

    Hello and welcome to NBR!

Your friend most definitely has a M17x R3 and Dell never released another vBIOS for it so your task should be to install the heatsink on the card with thermal pads and paste, plug it in your M15x and cross your fingers.

My guess is that it will work, not sure about the fan control.

And yes, it is quite an upgrade, congrats!

Well I tried it...it worked, had to upgrade the bios and uninstall then reinstall command center but it seems ok so far. Index went from a 5.9 to 7.4 for the gpu not bad :)

Good job! Considering the 6970M and 6990M really push the thermal limits of the M15x perhaps you have landed the perfect compromise between performance and heat thus far :)
