Nowhere, it doesn't exist and we don't even know whether it will ever exist under this name.

There are some engineering samples of the 6970m which can be unlocked to have 1120 instead of 960 shaders, that's what some people are calling the 6990m.
However, there's no specific information about a 6990m available from AMD, this is (as far as I know) pure speculation.

If you desperatelz want more power than you get with a 6970m, buy an engineering sample of a 6970m and unlock it. But it will draw more power than a regular 6970m.

During my quest to purchase a 6970M, a very reliable vendor suggested that I might want to delay purchasing the 6970M because of the pending introduction of the 6990M by AMD. It is my impression that the introduction is a matter of days, not weeks. That is all that I know about the subject, but I would say that the matter, while officially speculation, is well-informed speculation.

I went ahead and bought a Dell 6970M when it became available, notwithstanding the 6990M rumors on the theory that the M15x doesn't have the power to take advantage of the added capability. I may be proven wrong, but in my experience you can't fully utilize the 6970M'S capacity because of power limitations, particularly when used with one of the extreme CPU's.

Well after a couple of weeks reading almost every single post about Ati 6970 in m15x I was planning to get one for my lap. But today I saw this in the m18x forum:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m18x/586856-amd-6990-coming-middle-end-july-18.html
Do you guys think there's a chance of getting this one in the m15x or with 6970 we allready hit a roof?
Either way I'll wait a bit more since there could also a price reduction in the 6970 after this new one comming out officially

Dell already listed the Blackcomb XTX Part Nr, you can call Dell and buy one.

    DN0PD AMD Blackcomb XTX
    Here's the complete list.

Can't really say whether it will work or not without trying, but I guess it's possible, especially without XM processor, but I can't deny that our loved machines are hitting the roof with the 6970m.

Nah no way. It has 1120 shaders and is almost twice as fast as a 5850 anyways on stock. I have one of these and yes they perform very nicely. I may be able aqcuire some more if people want.

    If you can sure.

Was going to buy either the 6970M from MXM upgrade or one of these that you pointed me in the direction of.

Regardless, its an end of the month deal for me. Lot of dough for a video card, but so worth it.

Holy crap. I go away for a little while and when I come back theres yet another bombshell to be savoured. Sometimes I really do hate the crushing speed at which the hardware industry moves forward. At least this means the 6970's are coming down in price perhaps? And is it now possible to get them direct from Dell? Got to love NBR news...

I purchased 6970m es edition also and I flashed the m17r3 vbios
then it surely unlocked to 1120 sp with no graphics overdrive

but then I found 6990m vbios here
I tried to flash it and it works with graphics overdrive
    [IMG]
and again, this is my 6970m es edition
now probably nothing different from the 6990m

and may I ask a question: I see you have overclocked your 920xm and 6970m es edition
but how did you deal with the power consumption problems

Nice! Congrats on the nice card. Yeah basically it is pretty difficult to have both running so I have to choose, when I'm playing games, the GPU takes priority and the CPU is left at stock and vice versa for other CPU intensive tasks. Never together unless benching.

    thx a lot
    I have a 840QM without overlocking now.
    maybe I will have a 920xm.

so could you tell me how to set priorities for CPU and GPU?
    manually?
    using what kind of software?

and there must be heat dissipation issues with 6970m es edition
like shutdown unexpectedly while playing large 3D games
could you tell me how to deal with this also?

    sorry for too many questions

Make sure you keep an eye on the temperatures when you are gaming. Also I wouldn't recommend overclocking anything when gaming, plus you hardly need it.
I use throttlestop for overclocking the CPU. Basically, doing non-gaming tasks, I have the CPU overclocked to around 2.93GHz maybe more. When I want to play a game, I'll then turn the CPU down back to default values.

just a question. how do you know if this card is the 1120 shaders version or the 960?
because if it's the 960 one then it's still expensive.

That's not an ES according to the die. Could be an early sample, I don't know, but it's not guaranteed that it has 1120 active shaders

If the card is from Dell, has hynix rams and has ENG written on it. It is very likely that it has 1120 shaders.

I see the 6990m on your m15x works fine at 775/1000
mine can't even work steady at 715/900
I have thermal paste on GPU'S back already
But my m15x always shutdown while running 3DMV , GTA4 and Crysis 2 etc
I guess there maybe two problems
    power supply or heat dissipation
so what is your PSU and how do you cool your 6990m

Well mine isn't stable at 775/1000 as that was a one off 3DMark run. I have two different PSU's both rated at 150w so that isn't the problem. The attached image is how I slightly modified my heatsink to make way for something that wasn't helping with the contact.

Yeah I did it really carefully to make sure that there was still enough room inside the pipes. So far, doing this has given me much better temps. I've done it on 2 heatsinks already with similar results on both. Now when gaming the memio peaks at around 81 while the rest are around 75. Before was much worse. You have a spare one svl7, try it and you'll see what I mean.
