    Hey all,

FINALLY! I got a 920XM after much stuffing around and toying with the idea of building a desktop.

So I got a used 920XM for $325 including postage from within Australia.

Now, I'm just wondering what precautions or things I need to know with swapping the 740QM out with the 920XM?

Do I need to change any settings, voltages, anything or what not?

First time replacing a CPU, thinking of maybe taking it to a local tech and watch them do it for me.

    Thoughts?

    Thank-you all. :)

Nothing much needs to be done, just simple plug and play. Enjoy your 920XM and overclock it!

You can do a power drain(hold the power button for 20-30 seconds with the charger and battery removed) then do the process.

Other than that, make sure you have the latest bios and its plug and play.

Is voltage of motherboard a consideration?
I've tried to find a way to view the voltage of my motherboard as I don't think its 240v but hwinfo64 didn't display anything.
I would also like a 920xm so would it work on my old 2010 m15x (not the area 51 one) ?

I have BIOS A09, which I believe is the latest. I'll look it up soon.

Yeah, I was wondering if I'd have to change motherboard voltages or anything. But from what people say, I guess not...???

    A09 is the latest.

There are no voltage options for the CPU on the M15X bios. Nothing needs to be changed. You can just restore defaults in the bios, do a power drain, then swap the processors.

You should be OK with just putting it in with the latest BIOS. I hope you enjoy your new processor!

Is it just me or does ebay have a massive markup on 920xm these days. Im seeing $500+ for qs which is outrageous considering they were selling for $250-$290 not too long ago.

    Yeah, they're rather expensive.
Used you can get them around $200 - 350.

    Nice find!
unfortunately a lot of the ones in the US around that price won't ship to Australia. :(

I got mine for a little under $300. And it's a production version. Just watch for a while, patience pays off.

    I hear michilius sells them.
I was going to get it from him, however I had already purchased one locally.

Yeah, I had been hunting/stalling for ~6 months...

Okay, so... Finally got it to work!

It was a pain to figure out however it was just a power issue.

anyway, temps idle are around 40, and full load at 80-90... looking pretty good to me. :)

Those would be a bit high for me. I get around 69C max with a 9-cell battery and around 73C max with a 6-cell battery.

With my own fan profile I can get 65C.

Those temps are still within specs, but I like a little bit of cushion space.

So you created a theme about what to do with this CPU and how to install it... and after you got it you just named the issue you had with it and didn't write anything more?

I'm sure next one who buy it and will have some problems with it he will not be sure what to do.
