hey guys. Recently I started playing grand theft auto 4 on my pc with the icenhancer mod. I get pretty decent framerates. But I was also thinking about how much of a performance boost I would get if I upgraded my 740qm to the 920xm. I'm considering upgrading the cpu for future games such as battlefield 3 (assuming it will be cpu heavy.) And alsojust to make the it faster overall. Will upgrading void my warranty? I dont really want to lose it and I'm thinking about extending it soon.

Yes if you replace any components that not from dell it will void your warranty, but well ....how can they find out?you just have to put it back your stock inside before you call them and don't mention anything . I did that twice already :p

As for the cpu , i suggest you upgrade your graphic card first

if i were to upgrade my graphics card wouldn't the only card better than the 5850 be the 6970?

well you can go with 6990 too
sv17 on the forum made a tutorial for 6990, you can look of that
if your not so familiar to hardwares then i'll suggest 6970
    easier,no need to mod anything
but there will be about 10-20% performance lost

To keep your warranty i dont think u can upgrade to anything else but the 460m as all the newer card were never offered as an option for the m15x as for upgrading the cpu to say a 940xm from dell would be extremely expensive.....

If you upgrade the CPU, keep the 740 so that you can have the system covered by the warranty. The CPU however won't be covered by the warranty. Same thing goes for the GPU. Aftermarket parts are not covered, but as long as you keep the old parts, you should be good.

How much would a 920xm and a 6970 cost? I know there are some issues with having both so I will see if I will get one or the other.

Not sure about the price but I do believe there will only be problems for high benchers who will be going beyond with high overclocking. I don't see a problem (PSU or system) if a moderate 3.5GHz or 3.8GHz CPU OC with a respectable 6970m OC is used for gaming etc. Just don't go crazy and do 4.5GHz LOL.

^^No I run my 6990m at stock settings and even with the 920m at 2.93GHz the GPU throttles. That combo ain't good if you want to have both components OC'd at the same time.

So how do you run your machine widezu96? Is it either or in terms of which component gets the OC then? I would think you'd pick the 6990m OCed over the cpu any day lol.

I run my CPU OC'd for normal tasks and video processing, and my 6990m at stock clocks at all times unless I'm benching. The 6990m gives more than enough frames for decent gaming even in Crysis 2.

@Fancysauce, they will work without problem :)

    920xm es is about $200
It should be stable if both are on stock clock

It's an awesome CPU just as fast as a 940XM Comparing it to a 740QM is like comparing a Honda to a Corvette. Before I installed my 940 I had a 740 installed from the factory. What a difference! Even just surfing the web, pages load faster and benchmarking and gaming it is a Beast!

yes you will need one of the best thermal compound to chill it down, such as as5,liquid metal ultra(recommended, the best on the market, but make sure u dont buy the 1st or 2nd gen product, ultra is the 3rd gen,buy that one) and you'll be good

I don't recommend getting liquid metal as it is very conductive and also corrodes aluminium like acid to a fly's balls. IC Diamond is very good from what I have heard. 3-4C better than MX-4 which is 1-2C better than AS5.

Just some rubbing alcohol will do, you can get it a pharmacy, drugstore or whatever these places are called in English, it's really cheap since you don't have to pay alcohol taxes for it (they put something in it which makes it pretty impossible to drink... well you can try and you'll see what happens :))

E.g. ethanol or isopropyl alcohol or similar stuff.

Well I think their liquid metal pad does not react badly to aluminium but the syringe stuff still does.

Be sure to melt it through during the burn in process.
