Hello, recently I have purchased an i7 920xm processor, but something weird happen when I run any Operative System (Windows 10/ Ubuntu 14). After 8-10 minutes the OS freezes/hangs, I don't know why this happen. I have used Arctic Silver 5 on my 920xm when I installed it. I put photos of my computer specifications based on CPU-Z and GPU-Z also photos of my PSU and my CPU. Someone have any idea? Thank you.

May be a chipset driver issue or perhaps inadequate power supply or some other assorted CPU/motherboard problem.

Hello Raidriar thank you for your answer. If the freezing problem could be the power supply, which PSU is the correct? I will search the latest chipset driver too.

150W power supply is what is original to the M15x. Your power supply may be faulty and need replacement.

Then it is unlikely to be your PSU or your battery. It is either a chipset problem or a motherboard problem.

download slimdrivers (and don't install ANY of its adware) and check to see if it finds newer chipset drivers.

Hello I did it and it not found any update. Could it be a incorrect application of thermal paste the problem?

Download throttlestop and keep an eye on what the CPU temperature is. if it is high, then that could be a problem, though I've never had a thermal paste application (even a bad one) give a freeze in windows. I would swap in your old CPU and see if the symptoms persist. If yes, then your 920XM is bad.

It is advisable when upgrading a processor:

Format the pc. Start a new installation.

I will try to run throttlestop before Windows hangs. However, I swap to my 720qm and everything works. Finally I want to ask if the black/dark spot in the CPU pins could be the reason that CPU is bad, what do you think about that dark spot?

Yes...that could definitely be a bad problem. It could be some sort of corrosion or dirt that is impeding proper electrical flow. Given that your system works 100% with the 720QM, I would suspect the 920XM is bad.

The 920xm is likey bad! A big surprise though. Looks like you are unlucky.

I have experience the freezing issue which was due to a failing PSU but if this was the issue likely the 720qm wouldn't work.
If the replacement 920xm has the same cause then switch PSU as the next step.
