Looking for most stable and worry free option I'm thinking the 920 might wear down the laptop over time due to 55tdp as compared to the 45tdp of the 840

The laptop is made to handle the 55tdp.

That really won't be an issue unless you go ridiculous with the overclocking.

I customarily have TDP set to 75W or 80W for the 920xm in my M15x. It has shown no adverse effects. The chip barely gets warmed up at the stock TDP of 55W.

The 920XM is built using the exact same technology as the Core i7-920 desktop CPUs.

The desktop CPUs have a TDP of 130W and extreme overclockers are running them well beyond that spec without any issues. Don't waste your time with the 840QM. It's a nice CPU and all that but it's not in the same league as the 920XM.

had my lappy over a year now and the cpu (920xm) for almost just as long.
the 920xm is good enough to "skip" a generation or two of processors.

In case you're upgrading get the 920xm, ES version... OEM is really much too expensive. And in case you get a new machine... get the cheapest CPU and upgrade it yourself to a 920xm. :D

When buying ES version the price difference between 920xm and 840qm is around £50. Imho this extra money it costs to get the 920xm is money very well spent.
