Hey guys! I did it. Honestly it wasn't hard. I had a previous install of windows 7 ultimate that I had installed my 8970m and 780m with and I just kept that OS and installed the 970m. It booted right up and I installed 344.75 drivers with a modified .inf with no issue. I ran benches and immediately ran into some issues but I fixed it with nvidia inspector it for some reason was locked at 30 fps and I set it to no limit which immediately fixed my throttling.

    970mstock.jpg

stock clocks 65c max temp 170 watt consumption

    970mOC.jpg

+135 core and +150 mem 70c max 190 watt consumption
    not much improvement

No throttle and no problems so far. This so far is the perfect upgrade for the M15x and it doesn't even have a proper vbios yet. It blows my old 780m and 8970m out of the water with no power problems at all. If anyone has any questions or needs any help just let me know.

I wouldn't say it blows them away. My 680M can practicially reach 8800 if I OC it like crazy!

780M should be able to score 9000 points no problem. OC I am sure it will outperform it. Still for a card that is far weaker than the 980M it is impressive that it beats the 880M stock for stock.

Haha when I upgrade to a 980M or amd next gen card. M15x already beat 10K with a 880M in the hands of SVL 7.

970M is impressive don't get me wrong but it only just about beats the potential Kepler can deliver. For 500 dollars I want more. Besides with today's poorly coded/ported games raw horsepower seems to count for less....

With a modded vbios 780m I was drawing too many watts at a slight overclock and it would trip my power supply and shut it down. I think it's because the 780m is very power hungry. You are right with the 680m as far as being able to crank it up but that's with a heavy overclock which is a lot of strain and wear after sometime not to mention the heat. A 4gb version 680m is a great upgrade to the m15x but with 6gb and the power draw at 80 watts the 970m is the right card in my opinion. The 980m may be better but I was concerned with heat as I use this laptop in my lap and apparently some of the guys on techinferno are having an issue with power. Under the heaviest load I hit 76c which is crazy compared to the 780m at 93c and the 8970m at 94c under heavy load. Another thing to consider this is essentially a canibalized card at the moment. It has no true support for dell machines and has a stock clevo vbios and it's putting up these numbers with no modifications like my 780m had. Lastly this card under the heaviest load draws 190 watts max from the socket my 780m would draw 260 watts sometimes. It's not the biggest and the baddest but neither is the M15x in this case it was about a fitting upgrade not overkill and burning myself with a laptop. I have more money than sense sometimes and I may pick up a 980m one day but honestly the 970m is perfect.

I bought this card from RJtech. It came with a full heat sink attached sporting a nice set of fitted thermal pads which you just transfer over to the stock m15x heat sink and a clevo back plate which will work great in our machines just don't lose those screws(I lost them o_O) The total cost with 2 day shipping to me was $471. Anybody wanna buy a great condition 8970m? :D

Wow that is hot. The 970M does sound very cool. My 680M runs cooler at 68C at high OC but I have extensively modded the cooling. It won't sit on my lap that is for sure haha.

I can't wait for more tests. I am itching to upgrade but I also want to wait for AMD...

I haven't heard anything about new amd cards. If a dell vbios ever gets released we may actually see some truly impressive tests.

Congratulations I think is the first person to do so.

You've tried to play a game? Would be great to know your impressions and / or upload a video to youtube to see it in action.

Displayport -Works well? I mean to have a second monitor and audio.

Can you explain a little more about the problem of 30 fps and how it has managed to fix it?

Thank you very much, was eager to watch a 970 in the little alien. Very happy.

    regardss

I have not tested the display port or the hdmi port yet. I don't use monitors but when I get a chance I'll try it out. I'm curious to see if it works as well. Games run very well and the card functions correctly and efficiently. The 30 fps appeared to be a driver present that I corrected in the global settings in nvidia inspector. It's a simple fix really.

    everything really... :D

i think youre doing a good job, but i was wondering did it fit right out of the box? de thermal pads thikness? are there possible thing you have to watch out with?
too be honest i like it when ppl treat me as a noob there is never enough info for me :p or are gonna make a write up about ?

i have the idea sometimes people dont tell everything one good write up makes a huge differents........there is so much on the internet but i think it's never really compleet and than everyone askes questions in that treat.......and its getting a mess or you have to read like 100 page's.

so a write up like Svl7 did ......for me that would be nice.

BTW i am gonna do that on my hybride cooling treat as well.....

I don't plan on doing a write up. The installation is the standard video card installation and the stock X brace and screws can be used with the stock M15x heat sink. If you get the card from RJtech then transfer the thermal pads from the clevo heatsink that will come with the 970m. After install just plug it up and it should boot right up. I did not install a new OS I just reused my old one. I installed 344.75 drivers after modifing the .inf I installed the drivers. I use evga precision and activated kboost and it may just be my card but the driver configuration through nvidia inspector had the card capped at 30 fps I set it to off or no limit and saved it. After that I have had no trouble.

Congratulations Eepo, well done. I take it that there is no 'sound issue' like experienced in the 770m / 780m's? With those cards you have to disable the on board sound in the BIOS to boot up the laptop, then a little bit of voodoo and the dark arts (lots of delete this, install that, reboot, reboot, reboot) to get it working.

I had a 780m prior to this and I didn't have any issues there either. Maybe it's just my m15x but it seems to get along with any card

Ok i have some questions........i am a noob when it comes to Nvidia because i Always had a amd/ati card.

    1. De Card is just drop in, so no mods on heatsink or anything else right?.....offcourse the normal thermalpads (1mm) and paste.
    2. what about the the drivers ....first install them than change the ini. file i really dont know how that works, or are there compleet driver set availeble where the ini is already changed?
    3. sound dont work and also hdmi dont work......right?

I hope you dont mind me asking this but i wanna have a 970m but i really dont know how Nvidia works in a alienware.

    Thanks Mike

Sound works fine on mine. Assassin's creed gets about 30 to 42 fps in a crowd at high settings and it will occasionally get to 60fps. Very playable. no mods to the heatsink. just transfer the pads over. You'll have to mod the drivers prior to install. you;ll have to edit the inf file in the drivers or find an already edited one for the m15x. I'll share mine if you get one. I don't know if the hdmi or display port work. haven't tried it yet

There are plenty of guides on how to modify the inf. Quite simple process.

I used this one to show me how to modify the inf for my 680M. Works fine. Just follow the steps through and it is easy. However do copy the relevant info to a notepad file and save it for the next driver install it will save time you will know what I mean when you follow the guide. Don't rely on someone else to give you the inf. Better to be self reliant.

So jealous of you two!! I just cannot put 500 dollars toward this without the wife noticing!! haha

A watercooled 970M!! You should be able to push some crazy high overclocks and crush all modern laptops with the same card!!. Please do! It would make me happy!!

Anyone knows something about prefcap on GPU Z? It seems the 970m throttles a bit, on unigine valley its not working at 100% (gpuload drops or throttles down) the pref cap give's error.

Eepo did you run Unigine Valley (55 Fps here on 1600/900) for testing or maybe look at the gpu z, because i did run into a little lagg. I know the perfcap is no problem now, AMD did not use this so i thought it was a problem. Tomorrow i will do a 3dmark11 bench so i can show you. Btw my card shows not as a gtx 970m because i modded the inf wrong i guess :D

Supposedly Maxwell is acting weird in Alienwares... In the 18x R2, when Peter goes above 4.1GHz on his CPU it throttles.. Windows 8/8.1 doesn't help either.. Are you guys using Windows 7 or 8.1?

By undervolting. you might still be able to run stock clocks but ensure no throttling. No idea though, I don't own this card.

    M15x is capped at 770M
Max thermal spec for VGA is 75W so even gtx 680m is above this.

Gtx 770m is probably the best option

You can see that the M15x is very upgradable by reading this thread. The 680m works great in the m15x.

Best deal now would be a gtx 970m tho......no heat and no weird things at al just mod the inf and youre good too run. You do need a fast CPU tho. The 970m runs best on a 24 core clock but than you would need better CPU cooling.

What a load of bull lol! The m15x isn't capped at all. Any GPU works in it! Including the latest 970 and 980M!!

I run a 680M and have OCed to 780M levels at over 1ghz core. It works fine.
