Hello! I just want to upgrade my m17x R3 with gtx970m.
Did your gtx970m come from Clevo?
And you have flashed the vBIOS? I can see the subvendor is Dell.
    Thanks a lot!

This changes everything! svl7 reckons with his BIOS 970M should be easily get 10k in 3D Mark 11 which is what I expected.
Someone on here please flash that BIOS and post benchmarks! Very exciting.

Actually I have my 4 cores set at 26. I'm not sure why it says 28x at that multiplier it would be at around 3.9 gigs and that won't work on my 920xm although she's still a champ.

thats what i have also, 27 runs but unstable not good for bench. 26 on all cores like a dream and still cool as well 53 degrees. for gaming i use 24, 24, 25,26 (no other mods done as only the cooling ).

strange thing is i tought the cpu would be a bottleneck but than i see slv7 run very high oc with a 720qm i believe .......

He probably just summons tiny ice elementals to skate around on them. I am gonna hike my TDP and TDC up and try for bigger numbers.

I read heavily through the thread but may have missed it.. was the BIOS (not VBIOS) in your M15x stock, and what version of the BIOS are you using?

Really good news to know that there is still further headroom with this laptop.

With a radeon 7970m, probably not necessary to upgrade to a geforce gtx970m for quite awhile yet though.

7970M is 2012 tech. The 970M is quite a ways better.

Modern titles seem to suck both the 7970M and 680M dry particularly as vram usage is almost always maxed. Unless you have a 4gb card which 680M can have while the 7970M never did.

That is true. Pretty much neck and neck with the 680M that one due to better binning.

The 980m works just fine in the m15x. And wow it just slaughters the 970m. The thermal limit of the m15x is better suited to the 970m but honestly you could daily drive a 980m in it. I am very impressed with the 980m.

So, I've read through this thread and obtained a 970m. I am comfortable with replacing the GPU - I upgraded my CPU without incident, and have done other work on the laptop. I am not clear about the display driver part of the process. I currently have the 260m card (noted in my sig), and am running 64 bit Win 8.1. The most recent driver for the 260m is 340.xx - and the 970m is not included as compatible hardware. I looked at the inf files for the latest driver compatible with the 970m (347.09), and it does not appear compatible with the 260m. My thought would be to proceed as follows: Uninstall the 340.xx driver and shut the machine down. Install the card and startup - I would think a generic WIn 8.1 driver would allow me to run the 347.09 driver install.

But there is this discussion of how to modify inf files...What should I modify and how?

    Help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Joe

There are many threads on how to modify .inf files. The drivers will not work on your laptop after you install the 970m. You'll need a modded inf that you can get either from techinferno forums (you'll have to have 5 quality posts or pay a 5 dollar subscription fee.) or search for guides. I have a modded set of 344.75 drivers that are set up to work with the m15x and the 970m but I am not on that laptop at the moment. I may be able to link them sometime tomorrow but I'm not sure. Also windows 8.1 will not let you install even with the modded drivers unless you disable driver enforcement prior to install.

Thanks for your good advice! I did get the guide - but when I checked the inf file, it seemed to already have strings for the 970, so I wasn't sure what to copy to where. Anyway, I will try techinferno, and leave a message here to let all know what I found out. If I can get a driver there, I will try it.

    All the best,

    Joe

I went over to Techinferno and have been learning a lot. Nobody over there seems to have modded inf files for the m15x - all have been done for m17x and m18x. Not sure any of those will work. I made an attempt at creating inf files with id info from the clevo section of display Drivers. I will go ahead, uninstall, and shut down to install the card - and switch to my other machine for now.

I really, really works. None of the instructions on modding inf files were easy to understand, but my modified files worked (after I disabled driver signing again (I thought doing it once was enough, but it seems you have do do it each time). Anyway, on to playing with my new toy! :) :)

    Thanks again!

Oops! Forgot to update my signature x 2. The reason I wanted the 970m is that I have a new external monitor, a Dell IPS U2713HM (2560 x 1440, 27") that I use for HiDef video and photo editing. Now my 1080p x 60 fps videos play dead smooth, at full resolution. I have only done a little benching, but 3DMark Vantage over 23,000 total is not too shabby. And, as noted previously, the card runs cool!

    Thanks again, Eepo Saurus!

I did run a couple of benchmarks, compared to my other laptop (ASUS N56VZ71 - 3030Q processor, 650m graphics. Previously, the combo of the better processor and better video card let the ASUS clobber the Alienware.
Note - Clocks are standard [Using Throttlestop for 940mx - 26,25,24,23] , and same drivers.

    ASUS: 3DMark06 = 13568 3dMark Vantaqe= 9208 3DMark11 Firestrike= 1548

    AWm15x 3DMark06= 19842 3DMark Vantage=23,338 3DMark11 Firestrike= 5716

For the CPU benchmarks, the difference is not so great. However, the 970m clobbers the 650m in the GPU benchmarks.

I suspect the difference would get even greater at higher resolutions.

    I'm a very happy camper!

    Hey lads,

Another successful old M15x + 970m user. Got it installed and running yesterday. No throttling or any issues so far. Temperatures are crazy low compared to any previous card I had on my m15x.

3DMark11 = 8.6K on my first run at stock clocks. Max temp 68 C.

Crysis2 running at 60fps at ultra settings.
The Crew running at 40 fps at ultra settings.

    Beautiful guys, beautiful.

P.S. Gotta update my signature, AGAIN!!!

Hey can someone dump their Woking m15x gtx 970m vbios for me , because I got this card for my m17x r2 but colors are inverted , I guess it's due to a newer vbios . I guess if I flash back to a older one I can get back to normal working order.

    Thanks for help

I cannot download it from TI because I don't have enough posts.

It should be an older vBIOS version so might work! Instructions are all there in the file..

Ok, I have read through this and it seems like the folks who did the upgrade, either did it from the 260m or some other past upgrade.
Has anyone tried this from the 5870m? And will the brackets from the 5870m work on the 970, or do I need to purchase something in addition to the video card itself?
    Thanks.
