I was playing Rift tonight on Ultra settings and my 5850 got HOT! According to HWiNFO32 my GPU thermal diode got up to 114.0 C max and my TS1 MemIO got up to 114.5 C.

Does this mean that I need to reapply my thermal paste? Thermal pads on the memory?

The gpu was at 100% and the fan as well. It was a little bit warm in my bedroom as the weather is changing and we don't have the air on yet, but it doesn't feel hot.

Any way. Let me know if I should redo the paste and pads, get a cooler, or are these temps ok and to be expected.

The cpu never got over 67C and the other parts of the GPU never got over 70C.

    PLease give me some advice!

Wow, that's some dangerous temps. Reapply thermal pads will help.

Yeah you need to re-apply thermal paste. Max temps I have seen are around 75 on my GPU.

Also make sure your system is clean and free of dust, especially the vents.

The system is about 2 weeks old. It is pretty clean. I thought those temps looked way too high.

Thanks, will be taking her apart tonight and re-applying the paste/pads.

I had no problems for the first couple of days and then suddenly it got super hot.

I ordered the thermal pads from frozen cpu that someone here recommended and I got antec Diamond thermal paste.

Ok, so I re-applied the paste and the pads (there was part of the gpu that it took two strips of thermal pad to make it touch correctly). Now I have played rift on ultra settings for a couple of hours and my temps only got as high as 82 and that is with it being pretty hot in my room. probably 80F in my bedroom.

No overclock, but it was at 100% load. Max temp was 82. Not sure what else I can do. I am using Antec Diamond formula 6 thermal paste, and fujipoly thermal pads from frozen cpu. I had to double them on one of the rows of ram because they were not touching.

If 82 degrees in a room that is probably 80+ at full load is too hot, then I maybe I need another thermal compound?

maybe your not applying them right? but if your not planning to OC i think that temp is fine

that is entirely possible. Today I followed the guide posted here in someones sig. I put a rice size blob on the gpu, tightened down the card. I then removed the card, and looked at the coverage, it seemed to cover the entire chip. I cleaned everything with 91% rubbing alcohol. Then did it again using a similar sized blob. I also saw that the memory modules on one side had put impressions into the thermal pads, but the other side looked untouched. So on the untouched side, I added an extra strip of thermal pad. It seemed that the ones that were stock were slightly thicker than the ones I ordered from Frozen.

I watched several videos about applying the paste. If there are some other suggestions I would be glad to take them. Would too much paste cause overheating? Or would too little? It is a non conductive paste, being my first time doing this in a notebook, I wanted less risk.

Yeah, I used a rice sized blob on both the cpu and the Gpu. maybe it was bit bigger than a piece of rice but it was much much smaller than a pea.

Anyway. I will see what happens over the next couple of days. If it doesn't get better, or if it gets worse, I will order some new compound and try again.

So today, I played for an hour or so and it was even hotter in my room (ambient temp was higher than yesterday) I only got up to 80, so thats 2 degrees cooler than yesterday.

Does the paste get better a few days in?

Make sure while the thermal compound is "new" you power cycle your computer a few times (let it cool back to ambient)

This allows the compound to dry properly.

During the break-in period temperatures usually drop a few degrees C if you applied correctly... that's what I always found for desktops I've built at least :)

85 C is warm but within spec (especially considering your higher than normal ambient temps)

I would give it another few days (with a few power cycles) and let's see where it's at :)

Followed your advice, I shutdown for a while booted back up and played Rift. I Now am at 78 C. That is with a full load of gaming for a couple of hours. It is getting better and better.

    UPDATE:

Now temps are maxing at 75 or lower on the GPU with a couple hours of gaming. Mostly playing Rift on MAX settings.

Glad to hear... sounds like to installed everything perfectly then.

If you see the temps rising in the future it probably means it's time to clean the vents :)

    Enjoy it :D

where are you using you laptop? on what surface?

make sure to use it on hard surfaces, like a table or a tray, and not of soft ones, like a bed or your legs, since that blocks the air intake from the vents.

It almost always sits on my desk. So it stays on a hard surface. Once the paste was reapplied, correctly this time, it was fine. Well that and the thermal paste.

The thermal paste that I used was Antec Formula 6, Nano Diamond compound. Someone told me yesterday that the diamond pastes have a curing time of about 3 days.

Rift Temps last night were super cool. Low 60's.
