So I pulled the 980m out of my M15x so I could sell it and put the $ towards a 1060 (1070 still pricey) for my AW 17 R1 Ranger.

So while the Ranger is all dismantled waiting for parts, I put the HD8970/M290x in the M15x for temp gaming (ordered a 970M to put back in the M15x later).

Besides the fans w/HD8970/M290x which are only controllable with hwinfo, the card was a pretty good performer -with older drivers it seemed (Catalyst 15.7.1), always got poor FPS with Adrenaline editions. That is good FPS for maybe an hour max, THEN major throttling.

Sometimes if I use DDU and uninstall/reinstall the driver the FPS goes back to peak, but soon again after an hour, it will throttle. When it's working at peak the GPU temps can go as high as low 80's, when it's throttling the GPU temps stay in the 40s -like it's not really kicking in.

I was playing Madden 19, and getting good FPS in game (70-80 and around 40 during cut scenes). But when it throttles, in game I can barely get 30, and during the cut scenes it goes to single digits -making it unplayable.

I'm getting the 970m by the weekend, but does anyone have a solution for the throttle with a HD8970M/M290x? Thx.

Well driver was updated back to Adrenaline and the issue fixed itself -no throttle -Windows 10 quirk I suppose.
