    Hi
I've got a dell tech coming sometime tomorrow to replace my palmrest, CD/DVD drive & my 260M to a 5850M. Now should i have my laptop disassembled for when he arrives or just leave it on my desk ready for him to do what he needs to? Never had a tech come round before. Any advice please.

    Thanks

Just leave it as you normally use it.
Make sure you have good lighting, as this will make his job easier, and make sure you have a towel or something like it so he doesnt scratch the lid when he flips it over.

    OK cool, thanks.
Yeah kitchen table's right next to a window. Normally use a small towel when repasting so will put that there. Hopefully everything will go smoothly and i can start getting some game time back in :)

maybe you also can put some softening on the table to avoid scratches

The tech will bring an ESD mat, towel is a no-go when it comes to work with sensitive components.

Don't have a esd mat, usually use a grounded wrist strap with a thin towel under my m15x, this no good either? Thanks.

Well, you must have bad luck to kill something while repasting, and in addition to this the most sensitive components like CPU / GPU have extra circuits to protect themselves from ESD damage, but a towel isn't the best thing to have around since it can easily cause static charge, you also don't want to wear a woolen jumper while working with your system.

Grounded wristband is already pretty helpful.

Not sure i follow, i haven't killed anything whilst repasting, GPU just throttling when gaming around the half hour mark. Getting it replaced with a 5850M. I'll definitely not be using a towel when disassembling from now on though. Thought a wrist strap would be all i need. Will invest in a mat asap i think :)

Yes, I know you didn't kill anything... it's actually almost impossible to kill something while repasting, that's what I meant.

And most people don't use an ESD mat for exchanging GPUs etc and it works, but I always say better save than sorry...
I think it's worth the couple of bucks, but everyone has to decide for himself.

Last time I had a tech come over he changed mobo, screen, hdd and palmrest. No wristband, no strap. Just a towel.
Doesnt matter how he does it, because if he breaks it they just send new stuff. And repasting shouldnt be able to kill anything in your system unless you drop it :p

***Yes, I know you didn't kill anything... it's actually almost impossible to kill something while repasting, that's what I meant.*** My bad, sorry man :-$
Think I'll definitely purchase a matt. Would love to do the CD/DVD - HDD Replacement mod in the future, no real need from a CD drive anyway.

Just had tech come, fitted new palmrest, CD drive and a new 5850M :) really nice bloke, said he's only worked on 1 m15x but dismantled it like he owned 1 lol, really good service anyway. What a difference a 5850M makes at stock over my old 260M...well pleased :)

nice .. was it a replacement because your 260m was faulty or did you buy it as an upgrade? =)

My 260M ran like a champ for around 15months then started throttling around 70° when gaming. Asked for a replacement and they offered me the 5850 for a charge of 50GBP, i know the 260M is actually worth more as an option but i didn't mind paying the price as loads of members here regard the 5850 as a really good gaming card. Don't get me wrong my 260M would oc really really well, just prefer my 5850 now ;-) running it at stock I'm getting decent performance, going to oc when BF3 & Skyrim get to my desk!

Never had the need to overvolt my 260M as it oc'd like a champ. I upgraded my warranty for another 2 years this march so my now new 5850M is in till then :) well worth the 50GBP. Have fun!
