Wait I am new to the forum but I would like to know if you could add a gtx 580m to the M15x. I would really like to see how one of those works and I am really interested in how games would run like battlefield 3 would probably run on ultra with 900p right. Also where can I buy a laptop gpu it is really annoying to have a gtx 260m in such a beast pc with an 840qm and 8gb ram.

I got my previous temp problems fixed I was getting 93* C ingame gpu temp
but I have had my laptop a year and haven't cleaned it lol So I blew all the dust out and I never got over 62* C. So I over clocked to 600/900/1500 and I'm still not going over 68* C but I'm still at around 30-35 FPS on low and thats pretty much unplayable for me. All this with a GTX 260m any other suggestions? IDK how high I can go overclocking but if I burn up my GPU I'll be without a PC for a long time because I can't afford another GPU atm.

    Any advice is welcomed.

    Thanks

I did some analysis on how bf3 beta runs on caspian border 64 player map.
With ultra textures with medium to low settings 900p i was getting 30-50fps with dips to 30s in busy areas. I monitored the cpu and gpu usage and noticed 90%+ usage on all 4 threads of my 620m. When the cpu is pushed to 100% usage that where i see the 30fps. even after turning all graphics settings on low and trying the 64 player map again i noticed the gpu being 60-70% usage whilst the cpu still maxing at 90+% and still causing 30fps dips. The 620m is indeed the bottle neck for 64 player maps. the cpu can handle the metro map fine and help give a contant 40+fps with previous stated setting.
Looks like a 920xm is in order. Hope this help any other 620m users.

Thanks for this, it explains so much.

it looks like my 430ms the reason im getting no more then 40 fps, its always at 100% no matter where i am on the map, hoping that 920xm gets here already.

I'm OC'ing my 920xm and 460m and I'm getting no throttling here. It's running between 45-68fps. Sometimes low 40's in busy places.

Played a bit more and i wouldn't say the 620m can't deal with bf3 but just occasionally when alot is going on it really pushes that cpu to 100%. Dam good cpu as the temps are really kind even with constant 80%+ load going on. Anything less than an i7 will not cope too well with bf3 for sure.
The 920xm is quite cheap now so no problems with that upgrade, however xmas is coming I quite fancy splashing out on the new m17x.

Do drivers really matter for the game because I just played Caspian Border on 1600 by 900 and everything on low and I am getting only on average 35 fps. Plus on metro I am getting like 40 on low everything and 1600 by 900. I don't really have updated drivers but does it matter. Really looking into building a desktop.

Any help is appreciated thanks :)

@tauzins I want to know if I could get a 700 dollar rig with a 6950 and a phenom with 8 gb ram running at 1600mhz. and a cooler master haf series. Would you recommend that.

Can someone guide me through assembling it. Finally what's better a gtx 560 or a 6950 and can you give me a cheap monitor. Would the specs I have be able to max out pretty much all current games. Also did you assemble your own pc if you did then how hard is it. Can someone give me a good motherboard that can support 3-way sli but is not expensive since I am on a real budget.

hmm, @ ultimatebeast, one of my buddy's was selling a i5 2500 with a 285 4gb of ram and some other crap, for around 600-700 but i think he ended up keeping it now, wish u were looking sooner, as far as building a machine that can run the game, you can easily build a AMD machine to run the game at that price, hell u prolly dont even need a 6950 u could get the older 6870 or something and crossfire them, but i havent been paying attentions to AMD recently so i wouldnt know whats best for them, i currently like my INTEL and nvidia setup

Thanks, I am really interested in pc gaming. But am kind of dissappointed in My AW M15x. I thought it was going to be able to play games really well. And don't get me wrong its a really cool pc but i have only had it for like a year. plus I messed it up because I accidently reinstalled windows and now all of the drivers are gone. plus AW doesn't update their drivers so yeah. I don't think I am getting the performance I should be because of my mess up. It is like a normal pc now without any gpu drivers or anything.

That is why I am really considering a gaming pc. i really see that gaming pc not laptops are better because they are just simple like 10x better. They are more powerful and everything. but can yourecommend me to a huge gaming case you know of. I will probably build my pc after the summer. Like in August because right now I don't really have the cash.

What is your rig or are you going to play bf3 on ur AW. Finally how do i overclock. Because I want to do so I can play games a bit btter. Is my bf3 performance normal and do drivers really help because when I tried installing them again. They installed and then the screen went blank and then my system had to repair itself. It was terrible.

What performance are you getting on battlefield 3.

Finally what is the best gaming case for pc.

    Thank you tauzins.

Sorry for all of the questions

Well the thing is overclock is really trial and error, my m15x gets 40 fps avg on medium for bf3, the drivers do help, you can get updated Intel drivers and video drivers from respected manufactor website, I can link you tmrw I'm in my cellphone right now

You know I have a m15x i7 740qm and a GTX 260. After I blew out the dust that had built up for a year (before that my max temps were 92*C) and over clocked my max temps are 68* C in game. I was still only getting 35 fps which was no good for me. I changed the in game resolution. I knocked it down a few notches and got my fps to around 55-60. So if your having FPS problems in game adjust the resolution and you'll notice the difference.

nah, not on the 460m though, it runs 1080p just the same as the 900 so its w/e... i mean if i wanted it to run less than native sure... but that would just look plain ugly

Yeah but what settings on medium or low. Because I have everything on low even 1x antiscopic filtering. I also sometimes have the resolution set to 1366x720 and only get like 30 fps.

Yea that was with everything on low. TBH I worked on getting it fixed so much that I missed a good chunk of the beta but for the last few days I got plenty of time in. I mean each time I changed the res one notch and would get higher FPS. SO I went to a res that didn't look like crap and had good FPS. I'm not a tech guy as a matter of fact I'm just just learning, but I know what worked for me so I'm just sharing it here.

@tauzins lol to be honest, I have no idea. I haven't repasted, I don't even know if there are thermal pads there! I just keep the system clean and my temps rarely break 70C. I'm getting 99% load consistently reported on MSI Afterburner and HWinfo64.

Anyone else having horrible stuttering (specifically with the mouse) in this game? I can't tell if it's server lag, or if it's just me, but it doesn't feel like traditional "your-system-isn't-good-enough" lag. My FPS isn't the greatest, but the stuttering seems like it's something else. It even happens (although less) on low settings. Hopefully future patches will fix it... Also, how do you know if you're running the game in DX11 or not?

Guys with AMD cards, I havn't tried, but I think if you go into CCC you can turn tesselation off and overide the Application settings for BF3. Worth a shot and if it works should boost FPS I think.

    I'm currently running bf3 on an M15x with an i7-720 and a 460gtx card and it's horrible :-/
The game itself runs fine, good fps and everything but for some reason every 5-7 mins it just freezes up my entire system forcing me to reboot :S

Anybody know of a fix or something to that it at least freezes les often? :(

Edit: Removing the OC on my 460gtx didn't work.
Also, the card never gets hotter than 68 degrees celsius so I don't think it's overheating or anything.
Also it never exceeded 85is% load.
Oh, and for some reason this never happens in single player >.>
And I tried updating drivers, going back to older ones etc I think about 3/4 different drivers total

5850 @ 750/1050 on medium/high settings, no AA, v-sync on. The game runs great, I haven't checked my frame rates though. Everything is set to performance in CCC except v-sync. Catalyst AI is off, I don't know how much of a difference that makes. I can post a screenshot of my CCC settings if anybody wants to see them.

Explain how it freezes. Is there a sound loop when the game crashes?

Yeah I suppose so, it'd be a very short loop though, sounds more like someone farting through my headset :p
If it's silent when it crashes no sound comes out so I guess it's looping

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I had the same exact problems with bad company 2 as did a LOT of others. Crash with a sound loop requiring a hard reset, only happens in multiplayer, no OC software running or anything. Apparently it is a problem with punkbuster and the on board audio in some computers. The odd thing was that the problem wasn't consistent across identical rigs, some had the problem, others didn't. Its possible that you're experiencing the same problem, which is interesting because I don't have the problem on bf3, but I do on bc2.
Try to disable the enhanced audio in your BIOS (you wont have any audio :( ) and see if you still have the problem in multiplayer. If not then we know what's wrong, and if you do at least we've determined that it isn't your sound card.
I had to buy a usb sound card just so that I could play bc2 online without crashing. Best Buy has a $20 creative sound blaster card and IMO it sounds much better than the stock audio in the M15x, my sub bumps with the external card, too bad it takes up a precious usb slot or else I'd still be using it.

Well I disabled the soundcard and I was able to play about 2 maps before it froze (guess thats about 30ish mins)
Still this is no way to play with no sound :S
And I don't really feel for using external crap either..

Could a fresh windows install help perhaps?
Also, the soundcard drivers are from 2009 on the dell site, does anybody know where I can get ones that are up to date?

The external crap is better than the M15x is stock. I wasn't trying to get you to play without sound, just to see if the audio was causing the crashes. Which it obviously isn't, so don't worry about drivers for the sound card.

Have you tried reinstalling the game? Have you played on non-punkbuster servers? A fresh install of windows might might help, but I have my doubts.

Yeah I tried playing non PB servers and it works great :-/
So now I know it's PB, do you reckon it'll ever be fixed from PB's side or am I doomed to spend my time on non PB servers (away from my friends/clan server) or forced to buy a soundcard?

First find the punkbuster exe, and change its default run level to admin for all. Its probably already set to this, but its worth a try. Disable your antivirus if you have that running. Disable your firewall. Update punkbuster.

Try uninstalling Battlefield 3, then uninstalling Punkbuster services. And installing everything again.

I'm kind of upset. This is the first game that makes me want to move on from my laptop. I have had it for a year, and I do love it, but my fps is 28-40fps and I would say 30 on adv. This is on Medium settings. :(
