I have had problems with the audio doing this. I am pretty much 100% certain that it is a software issue, strictly related to my nvidia driver. On the latest Nvidia driver from either nvidia or dell sound DOES NOT work. If I roll back to the original driver that came with the computer sound works.

I should specify that I was hooking my computer to my TV and wanting to output sound via my TV. I did switch the sound output device each time I tried it and it would only work if I used the old driver. I tried talking to the guys at alienware, but they just gave me the "it's not supported" line. So, be wary.

An adapter was included free of charge with my system.
Will test tomorrow and post results.

Sometimes it just depends on the TV. I know I have a 40" Panasonic and a 70ish" Mitsubishi and for the longest time the Mitsubishi's sound didn't work, it does now though!

Would you need anything else except that wire? Or would I need to purchase some sort of adapter, if so I have no clue what kind.

I bought my alienware off someone and didn't receive any adapter with it unfortunately.

the m15x comes with a display port to hdmi adapter, so you will still need and hdmi cable. I bought an hdmi to display port cable but the sound didnt work on it, the m15x would display that the connection did not support audio.

Ya but like I said, I bought my M15x off of someone and didn't receive any display port to hdmi adapter unfortunately. That's why I am wondering how I would go about using the display port to hdmi. What would I need aside from the adapter and an hdmi cable (which type of hdmi).

A regular HDMI cable will work. As noted by others, sound support is variable - may depend on your TV. Worst case, you might need to use the sound output jack and run it separately to the TV.

    Display adapter works perfectly.
You need to make the HDMI connection the default device for output in the Playback Devices in order to obtain sound through your TV.

    After that's set...enjoy.
