Hey folks, I got an Alienware M15x with the i7 920xm and Ati HD5850m. Thing is that my gpu shoots up to 85 to 90 degrees when gaming extensively. I called up Dell about it and they replaced my thermal pad but the problem hasn't been solved. So I'm thinking of taking matters into my own hands and am planning to apply Artic Mx5 thermal paste. I need to to know - A) if this will work? B) how to do this?

    Thanks all :)

Youtube has some excellent video tutorials on how to do this.
Not saying this is the best video but this was the first I found .

Have you cleaned out the heatsinks for dust? Also play on your M15x with the back raised slightly to allow better airflow to the fans.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the replies! I use the 9 cell battery so the airflow is always optimum. I'm not too sure about the thermal pads, because when the engineer removed the GPU thermal pad, the ones on the side looked brand new, but the one directly over my GPU was literally in pieces... I heard people here using thermal paste like the Arctic MX5 and making their gpu temps stay in the late 60s :D :D :D

Sorry to post Amazon as they don't pay corporation tax but this is the product you need. You can find sellers on eBay that are reliable and not evil like Amazon

It will work like a charm. After that you can run these tests to see how that worked.

It worked quite well, but now my HDD is permanently at 55C.

It´s quite normal, as long as it stays under 60°C, it´s all good.
