Hello. I've been considering buying a new GPU for my Alienware M15x. I've gone through many posts some there have been many recommendations for some Nvidia cards as well as some AMD ones. I don't really have any interest in using an Nvidia card.

So I was wondering what is the best AMD card that I can reasonably get to work with my M15x? Is it the AMD 7970m or are there newer alternatives? Any advice, help is greatly appreciated.

You can get a 8970M or R9 M290X but these are exactly the same as 7970M except for the amount of VRAM they have. AMD has promised new mobile graphics cards which use HBM but they probably won't be available till 2016. 7970M is still plenty for modern games on medium/high settings. If you want ~40% more performance than 7970M then look to the GTX 970M but these are expensive!

Thank you for the answer. This is exactly the type of answer I was looking for. Considering that my M15x only has a 1600x900 display, would I need any VRAM more than 2048 MB ?

For modern and upcoming games, yes. 2GB of vram will rub right up against the minimum requirements, depends what you plan on playing.

True but 900p should be fine with 2GB VRAM for at least another year or so, just don't expect to always be able to run high textures (forget about ultra).

True, I don't think it'll need more in the near future.
