    Hey guyz,

I am a little worried of my GPU temp coz it reaches 100C while gaming. So I have this intel one thermal paste that came with the processor.

So my query is can I apply this on my ati 5850 Die.

Also, can I wipe out the existing thermal paste with a cotton cloth?

The Intel paste would probably work just fine, but why take a chance? You will need to get new thermal pads as well, so why not take the opportunity to get one of the best? Try MX-4 or OCZ Freeze --- safe, easy to use and highly effective. Arctic Cooling MX-4 Super High Performance Non-Conductive Thermal Compound (4g) - FrozenCPU.com

To clean the old paste off the GPU die and the heat-sink, you need isopropyl alcohol or one of the specially designed cleaning solutions like Arctic Clean, either of which acts as a solvent to dissolve the remaining paste. Drip a few drops onto the old paste, allow 1-2 minutes to dissolve and use Q-tips to remove the dissolved paste. Repeat until absolutely clean. Buff with a soft clean cloth. The die (and the heat-sink pad) should have a high shine. Cleaning and preparation of the die and heat-sink are crucial to a successful pasting effort.

Thnx for the quick reply but however the paste you mentioned is not available in india. Also I dont have the isopropyl alcohol as you have mentioned so was thinking of cleaning with just a soft cotton cloth. Would it work?

i used just a soft cloth first time and it seemed ok,after that i found some alcohol from the local chemist that seemed to do a good job (95% ethanol)
and also the guys at my local computer shop suggested using nail polish remover.Ok so before taking or using any of these suggestions wait for someone a bit more pro to say if its ok or not. just thought it might help if you cant find the correct items where you live. :)

Most rubbing alcohol, commonly available at drug stores or grocery stores, is ispropyl alcohol. If not available, then I don't know what substitutes might exist. A clean cloth and a great deal of care can probably remove a large portion of the old paste, but without a solvent, chances are some residue will remain that will interfere with the seal between the new paste and the heat-sink which will handicap the heat transfer/dispersion function. But, you can only work with what's available, so good luck and let us know how it works out.

If you're in a country that doesn't sell isopropyl, you can buy one of those cd drive cleaning kits and use that.

    the paste should be alright.

removing the prior paste and all residue however, is important.
