3 days ago, i decided to download some big files from the internet so i left my laptop on battery. I noticed after that, my batt wear level increased from 3.8 to 4.6, the next day i used the battery to download, the wear level is 7.2, and today it's 7.7%. It's strange that my friend's batt wear level is 3.8% no matter how he uses it and he uses his laptop on battery for quite a few times last year. Could someone tell me what's wrong with my battery ???? Btw, i use the 9-cell one and set to hibernate at 10%

How do you check your wear level?

how long have you had this battery? 7.7% is not very bad.

letting the battery reach low capacity is very harmful to modern batteries, they dont like reaching very low levels.
video, or using high performance profile, or cpu intensive tasks will drain the battery very quickly which also does the same harmful effect of shortening battery life!

    M15Xlover, welcome to the forums;
the 9 cell battery is about 2cm taller than the 6 cell, so yes, it is not flat on the bottom,
and it is as wide as the two rubber feet on the bottom of your new laptop, about 2cm narrower than the laptop, on each side.

    1. The wear level for my 6-cell battery is 10 %, although I rarely use it. Is it normal? I am supposed to do a discharge on the battery (using battery without plugging in, to drain the battery), at least once 2 weeks. However, sometimes, I forgot to do so.

    2. What is maximum wear level of the battery, indicating that the life of the battery is near to its end?

    3. I always ensure my laptop stay plugged in. And, I realized that the laptop will stop charging the battery, once it is full. My final question is that: do you remove your battery while playing games, to prevent excessive heat damaging the battery? I know there is a risk of motherboard failure, in the event of power supply cutoff. What is your opinion on this?

    Thanks for the information given.

Don't do battery drain, modern batteries don't need u to do that and don't ever let your battery drained too low (10% is safe imo). Your battery is unusable when the capacity is too low and not able to charge. I don't remove battery when playing games and i don't think u have to, your M15x will handle everything.

@madoon: i set my comp to hibernate at 10%. And i use power saver mode when using battery to reduce load on it. The only thing i can't understand here is why my battery capacity lowered too fast. My last Vostro 1500 battery wear level is about 5-7% for 1 year and i bought this M15x about 6 months ago.

@someone up there: i use hwinfo32 to check battery meter.

@all: honesty, i thought i was the one who needed answers =.="

There are numerous threads in this forum about batteries. Any way my battery wear is almost identical to yours. It's normal for Li ion battery capacity to degrade over time.

How about degrade over days ??? Would that be a problem ??? Mine degraded from 3.8 to 7.7 in 3 days, that's why i'm worried

The rate of degradation of Lithium-ion batteries is strongly temperature-dependent; they degrade much faster if stored or used at higher temperatures.

Some people suggest that if a battery remains unused with laptop being plugged in all the time, the laptop may incorrectly report the actual capacity of the battery. That is why power drain on battery has to be performed once per week, in order to recalibrate the capacity of battery. I am not sure how true this belief is.

This reason may necessitate the need to remove during hardcore gaming, as hot air expelled by GPU fan may adversely warm up the battery, resulting in reduction in battery life. That is why I am wondering whether to remove the battery during intense gaming or not.

as ElectricTurtle and i have said modern battries DO NOT NEED to be discharged, and it is very harmful to battery life.

i dont see how the air from the fans in the m15x can effect the battery, air is sucked from underneath and goes out from the back of the laptop, i have the 6 cell battery and this is the case with me, i dont know about the 9cell battery.

@ElectricTurtle your numbers are completely NORMAL!
the M15x uses more power than most laptops and it would make sense if the battery has to work harder, and would have shorter life span than it would in a different laptop.
as for the jump in degradation, i dont THINK that these batteries can judge that accurately, instead they may jump, like the case with you.
i have noticed this in my laptop, when it jumped from 6% to 9% and it seems like mine jumps with 3% intervals.

unless you seen another jump within this week, i wouldnt worry about it too much.

@maxilick & madoon: thanks for the advices, i guess i'll give it another week. Hopefully my battery will be faulty so i can ask for a newer one XD.

Been using for 2 months now and how i use it probably worse (i didnt know). I charge it until full, then drain it till like half, then charge it and so on. Only during gaming i let the battery on and full. Sometimes, i charge it in class in morning, then drain it at night in my room till 20%. Then charge it in the morning again. So i checked my wear lvl and its at 7.6% since last Saturday. I had been having my babe for 2 months now.

The temp, yes it plays a huge role in degradation of battery life. But i noticed that (in 9 cell batt) only the extra 2 inch near each ends gets warm. Over time it gets slightly warmer in the centre, but it think the cooling system it the best and superb.
