Alrighty, quick question to see if anyone else had this problem.

I searched a bit but didn't find anything that solved it.

Anyway, I installed a 5850 into the laptop and everything was fine and dandy.

It recognized it as a Standard VGA adapter and all that stuff. I made sure to uninstall any previous drivers, restarted into safe mode and driver sweeped, then went on to install the 10.11 drivers.
Everything installs without a problem and restarts.

Bios screen pops up, "Starting Windows" pops up... but the moment it finishes loading and goes black, it stays that way. It goes black RIGHT before the login page pops up. I've tried everything from reseating to power draining.

I'm not sure what to do.

I REALLY hope it's not a faulty card... I really don't feel like dealing with that right now -_-

could be a driver issue, have you tried a different driver??? personally i've been using the dell driver forever now, without anyone issues.

    I've tried 10.3, 10.6, 10.8, and 10.11.

Gonna give the Dell ones a shot now.
    Update: No luck.

I'm almost positive it's a driver issue since it ONLY happens when i install an ATI driver for the card.

It doesn't matter which version, they all cause it to just boot up to a black screen instead of the log in. This black screen is completely unresponsive.

Any chance that CCC is set for an external monitor?

CCC isn't even installed. Just the display drivers.

I tried to narrow it down but i can't figure why the drivers are causing it.

I even updated the Vbios. No luck. I'm running out of options =/

This was since i've had the card.

It's all good in safe mode / before installing the drivers. It's once i have the drivers installed and it recognizes the card as a 5850 that it just never loads to the login screen.

yeah sound like it could be a card issue, especially since you already know your way around with all the driver since you had a 5870 before.

Yeah, that's the first things i did. I always use driver sweeper in safe mode. I also reseated. That was in my first post.

I'm just gonna research this a bit more before i let Dell know.

    Hello,

I maybe have the same problem..

You write: Black screen after windows boot, i have it before even windows boot..

Sometimes when i push the power button, then it runs up "wrooouuum", and then just black screen..

Some of the light in the keyboard is on, and it sounds like the system is running, but just BLACK screen "on laptop, and on external"

I have notised it's when I i have the AW connect to power, and then on battery, and then again on power, then it's just black screen ! ?

    Same as you have ?

Nah, the problem i was having was that the screen goes black RIGHT before login. It's fine before that and in safe mode.

Either way, it was a problem with the card. I received my replacement card and it's working fine so far.

Yup! Thanks. About to flash it to 5870 clocks.

I'm assuming that Overdrive isn't part of our Catalyst Control center right? Just making sure since i merely skimmed through CCC and didn't see it.

Got it, thanks. I love that the low power clocks are super low. temps around the mid / high 40's idling.

@ Crelle - Hey, do you have your brightness settings on low? I know if it's on the lowest setting the screen stays black until it reaches the log in screen. Try raising your brightness on startup.

yeah the temps on the 5850 are real awesome, the clevo 5870 memory runs too hot for my liking.

Yeah, i might have to reapply the pads or something though... Mem got up to 85c after 10 minutes on furmark while the die was never higher than 73c.

although 85c on furmark after 10 minutes isn't bad.

hi guys,,i just got this problem right now,,my m15x won't boot to windows when attached to an adapter, and can only see a black screen..I can get inside windows only when using a battery, and when i'm almost run out of the battery and i attache the ac adapter,,the unit just freezes..to run it again with the battery attached,,i have to force it to shut down...i've done all the diagnostic tests as instructed by dell when i call them,,even had a respawn but still the same. Anyway,,learning from you guys that its a graphics card problem,,i will just tell them directly to visit this thread as i am going to deliver this unit to their service center and opt for a repair. I am typing with my m15 right now using a battery..that's very unfortunate as i am eager to play my games..

do you even see the bios screen when attached to psu? also i don't recommend sending it in if you have the basic warranty it should include next day in home. that way you can have a tech look at it right away.

yeah,,i can get inside the bios when attached to a plug it's just that when booting now to windows,,it's only back screen. Unfortunately though,,i can't have a tech look at it since they're only available by working days,,and i'm at the office at the weekdays,,i cannot be around. The only thing possible for me is sending the unit even though i'm still on warranty. Any other thoughts guys..thanks a lot for a quick response..

try to do a power drain with the cmos battery out to.

    turn off and unplug
    take out battery
open up bottom and disconnect the coin battery
press power button for 20 sec.
put everything back and test it out.

also have you tried updating the bios to a09?

    hi guys,
i delivered my unit to dell services, and its more than a week, 6 days not including 2 saturdays and sundays and been trying to chase them about my unit but still they haven't come back to me...i am really pissed off already...Is the problem really that complex, or are they just getting lame? Can i ask for replacement instead? I'll be smilling all the way if they will do that for me, but no possible i think...
