Title pretty much says it all- I can't change the brightness on my display anymore. When it's plugged in it's at full brightness, and when it's on battery it gets dimmer, but I can't change it at all whether or not it's plugged in. When I try to, the on screen notification for the brightness comes up (the little sun symbol with the lines underneath), but it doesn't actually change anything. I already tried the power drain trick, but it didn't fix it.

So yeah, I'm sort of at a loss as to why this is happening, anyone have any ideas?

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago but the power drain fixed it. Thats one annoyance about this system. Have to power drain almost daily.

Maybe try the power drain again.

I had the problem and identified how it occurs in my system. If i sleep it while on battery and wake it up on AC adapter, the screen brightness freezes to the lowest setting @ the setting on battery. Same goes vice versa, but the setting for screen brightness remains 100%. So when ever i sleep it, i remove the AC adapter from it.

Edit: The only way to fix it was a reboot.

I was told that using certain non-Dell graphics drivers can cause screen brightness issues, so maybe that's what's happening with yours?

Ah, that's entirely possible. Maybe I should switch back :p

Yeah, it's a windows thing exclusively though. I use laptopvideo2go drivers too for my 460M too, losing control to the brightness settings is the trade-off. Ubuntu on the other hand, still retains brightness control, so it's a windows-drivers exclusive, though, that makes sense.

Alrighty, that makes sense. I really started to notice this after I installed the new drivers. Thanks for the help, folks.

I am using the Nvidia Verde drivers and since 180 it stopped working. Now on the new 185 and still doesn't work. Will try a power drain and report back.

    EDIT: Nope

I had the screen brightness issue with the gtx 560 and laptops2go drivers for a long time. I fixed it by using this driver instead: NVIDIA 285.62 Modded Driver

Here is what i usually do, go to power setting -> the lid close setting, then choose to do nothing when closing lid. Then close ur lid, wait awhile and open it again. The screen brightness control should be able to be used again. :)
