    Burned/Broke another GPU, I think.

    Heya folks.

I'd like you all to see this video of my 7970m booting up on windows with drivers:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dbQuSgpgSc

Now, that's as good as dead, yes?

do I have the worst possible luck around?

5850m ~2-3 years ago - broke. No internal display - external only. Eventually would not display external at all.
    460m - after 5850m. worked okay - eventually replaced with a 6990m.
6990m - Broke. Burned. It lasted a little over a year I think. Artifacts in bios. Would run windows normally using generic drivers. installing proper drivers would not work. Same applies to external.
7970m - Got this around feb-march of this year [2014] - Broke just a few hours ago. I was at work - using it like always. Then I turn it off - walk home - boot it up - run my game - crash - reboot - left it alone to grab water - it stayed purple I think. Rebooted - results in the video above.

Reseated - did the eraser wipe - results still the same.

I contacted seller for help. It's just 9-10 months old. I think this one's a really bad fluke. Doesn't help that the first one I was sent from the old seller had a green internal display and that they said they'd "fix" the said card. If this was that very same card, man that'd be a bummer. I hope they replace this. I don't know my chances x_x

I had problems with my 7970M when I first bought it (used). While not the same issue I suggest you try the same solution. Remove the card completely and place in a non-static bag for 24 hours.
It sounds ridiculous but my 7970M would not display anything and the GPU fan would spool up to maximum no matter what I did (CMOS unplugged, power drain etc). I placed old GPU back in and left new one in the non-static bag for 24 hours (not on purpose), then just tried one last time before raging the person I bought it off. It has worked flawlessly ever since (over a year).

    Hope this helps.

I saw that post and I'm on that right now.

Also currently, this old 5850m I'm on is partially if not completely broken. Tested playing world of warcraft - it would display pink artifact vertical lines all over whites WHEN playing. Not immediately but soon after. This affects chrome/notepad/anything BUT the game. Not sure how to feel about that. Also this only happens on the LCD. External isn't picking it up.

what do you think? do I keep playing games on this old already broken one until it's at a point where I have to run generic drivers to even use windows or stop completely?

Killing the game gets the lines out. it gets up to 70C which I think is really low and not a concern.

I'd try to avoid using a partially broken GPU as it might break the MXM slot in your laptop. Did you check the MXM slot for damage upon removing your 7970M?

MXM Slot is okay as far as I can tell. Also I used a suede eraser on the 5850m. Now working perfectly. No pink lines of doom and panic. Seller hasn't contacted me yet about my 7970m besides acknowledging and saying he'd have tech guy look at my vid. No return instructions, yet. I hope there is.

    Bumping this thread

So, as far as broken GPUs are concerned. are they all beyond repair even by professionals? Especially the ones that work on bios without artifacts - work on safemode without artifacts - work on VGA Drivers without artifacts - does not work when proper drivers are installed.

The seller I got my card from said they'd look it up and if they can fix it, I can send it back. if they can't, no point resending it back. I doubt I can get a replacement.

Did you wait 24h and try installing it again? Be sure to do power drain by holding power button down for 30 seconds with battery removed and AC jack unplugged.

I did all that. Really dead. Looking into a 680m now. that should be my last purchase for my m15x as far as upgrades/repairs are concerned. if that still dies, I'm getting an old mid range gpu and letting this one rest.
