I tried to look for previous threads on the topic but ended up with alot of threads about the old m15 and others regarding nvidia cards.

I have a 5850 GPU and was running IDT for my sound management but I've now removed it. My video outputs perfectly through HDMI but I get no sound. My audio devices says that my ATI HDMI audio is unplugged and therefore cannot be chosen to output my audio and I've read page after page of other people with the problem but so far no fix has worked for me.

I had the same issue, and it was down to my HDMI cable. At first I brought a Display Port to HDMI cable which was sold as 'working with audio', but clearly didnt. As soon as I used a known working HDMI cable (with the bundled display port to HDMI adapotor) it worked fine... Obviously, this was my issue, may be completly different for you, but may be worth eliminating the cable as the problem. If you have somewhere / someone else who can test it (between your Blu-ray / DVD player and TV for instance?)

Do you have the display port to HDMI adaptor that came with the laptop? I know not everyone got one with there laptop, but if you did, try that with a standard HMDI cable.

The only other issue that (from the top of my head, at work at the moment) that may cuase it is older ATI drivers. Anything from the 11.x range will be fine with HDMI audio, so check your drivers.

using the DP to HDMI adapter which came with my laptop, plus a standard HDMI cable gives me audio through HDMI by default, no configuration needed.

Using latest stable Ati drivers here.

You could try to download the latest Dell driver and then click on custom installation and only choose the DisplayPort audio driver... should work.

And I'm not sure but you might need the IDT driver... otherwise I don't know how to choose the DP connector as sound output (well, it may do so automatically, don't know)

Ati should tell u if ur cable cant carry audio thru, u used to get sound thru same hdmi cable before?..... i say uninstall current ati drivers then a clean sweep and install dells drivers.... its up to u if uwant to do this, i usually just carry over ati audio drivers from dell ati drives cause for some reason they work better for me... i have a 32" sony bravia xbr6...

since new laptops come with a dp to hdmi adapter is it worth my time to call alienware and ask them to send me one (along with my TV tuner) for my outlet unit?

Turn your tv to the HDMI channel (w/e its called) before you do anything.
Then plug in the laptop to the tv.
For some reason this is what I have to do with my tv in order to get sound through. See if this works for you.

For anyone with this problem that is running a geforce 260M:

I have an M15x with a geforce 260M and I wanted to connect it to my TV via HDMI so I bought a cheap displayport to hdmi adapter from amazon for 2 dollars:

Amazon.com: Display Port to HDMI Converter with Audio Adapter: Electronics

After hooking it up the video instantly worked, i mirror and extend the display pending on what im doing but i also had no audio

I later found out there was something wrong with the newer geforce drivers that wouldn't enable audio through the displayport so i had to roll back to driver version 186.81

After rolling back i hooked up the tv again and i had to set the IDT displayport as the default playback device, and it worked.

Every time i disconnect the tv i have to set the speakers back to default playback device to get sound back of course

I now notice theres a new driver for the 260M that came out 4 days ago (280.26) i have not tried these yet.

Long story short i know you have an ATI 5850 try connecting the hdmi up and going to playback device settings and setting the IDT displayport as default device.

I find lately, sometimes after resuming from standby, my sound will output from the built-in speakers and not the tv speakers. I think once unplugging it then replugging worked but is inconsistent. The last time it happened I just did a full restart leaving the display port plugged in and it worked afterwards. Oh ya and mine would say the HDMI output was not plugged in, even though it was. The full restart is a pain but worked for me. I guess instead of starting a new thread, does anyone know can you use 2 external monitors with the M15x internal screen as well or is it just 2 external monitors? Wouldn't be for gaming just spreading out my work a bit. Anyone cut loose eyefinity and use more than one monitor just from the displayport? Thanks guys, sorry to go OT.

Just an update I updated the m15x to the newest nvidia drives 280.26 that just came out last week and audio from the display port will not work....

So I instantly went back to the drivers I know work 186.81 and it worked like normal keep in mind these drivers came out in Mid 2009 and it's the only one that iv used that I know work.

I think the problem you guys might be having with the ATI 5850 might also be a driver problem so I would try to find someone that dosnt have this audio problem and see what drivers they are using.
